(All Information was taken by the Dragon Lover's Guide to Pern: Second Edition. Just for copyright information..)
Something that is not required, but maybe you would like to know. Pernese rarely eat roasts, but rather eat a lot of soups and stews made with chunks of meat. Salted fish makes up other main dishes, and is traded for red meat or fruit. Most of the vegitables brought to Pern from Earth were wiped out by the Eighth pass. However, mushrooms at this time were popular, as were "peanuts, river grains (rice), and soybeans." Herb gardens are popular, and many kitchen doorways will have fragrant bunches hanging from them. Fort and Nerat have the most extensive spice gardens. Other things to eat include: tubers, swedes, legumes, fingeroots, parsnips, and turnups. Also note, Fort Holds grows sweet sugar beets, varieties of berries, and wheat, which, you know, is essential for Bubbly Pies! Fort (I am not sure about the other holds) makes cheeses, chedder, soft cheeses, and something called Stilton (don't ask, I don't know what this last one is). Beer and Wine are produced on Pern, and Fort used to produce a grape crop. And don't forget Klahbark! Which is used for klah and as a spice.
Interested in being a cook? Cooking is a hold craft, and if you want to be the best, you should train at Fort Hold. Both men AND women can be Head Cook. Cooks will barter for recipes and special spices for their masterpieces! Imagine the opportunity at the Gathers! I can only imagine, that like a county fair, there would be cooking competitions. That's something every one would want to judge!
