The morning had begun fairly well for Rory. As usual, he had started with the most important things on his list and went down from there. After repairing some things for the kitchen he had immediately gone to the infirmiry. There were supposedly a couple tables with wobbly legs. Everyone had their place in the Weyr and Rory definately knew his. What drudge didn't?
He walked in just as they were performing a birth. The baby was coming out backwards from the looks of things. Oh thank Faranth Nishor was born without complication. If anything had happened to Nisha, not only would he never have forgiven himself but he would probably be killed by a protective greenrider, he knew to be his lover. Complicated situations were obviously one of his strong points.
The drudge wouldn't intrude instead he went over to examine one of the tables not in use. His gray eyes watching the legs as he used his arms to put weight on the table and then come off of it. There was definately an issue with this one but he didn't think it was the leg being loose. The Headwoman wasn't going to like his idea of what this table was still good for. If it were up to him it would be made into fire wood. It wasn't like he couldn't make them a new one, given wood and a little time.

Nerine was busy all morning, she didn’t mind it one bit though, and brushing back an escaped strand she collected the basket with the jars of numb weed Eisu had made her brew for the last two weeks. The healer was if nothing else thorough in ensuring her newest charge learned all she could. Bright blue eyes gathered the rest of the things she needed to finish dressing the gash in the weyrling rider’s arm. Nothing too serious but it had to be cleaned and dressed properly to ensure it stayed that way. When she was finished she didn’t get so much as a thank you but instead watched the boy bound off to no doubt end up in more trouble.
Clear blue eyes rested finally on a familiar figure fiddling with one of the tables, with a half smile Nerine’s hands went to her hips.
“You are not thinking about stealing our table for the fire pits again are you Rory?” she couldn’t help a good natured grin, her slight form garbed in the usual floating blue. “I know a few people who won’t be too happy if you do it before you’ve a proper replacement that won't give the patient’s splinters.”

Rory raised his head to see the blue eyed girl talking to him. "Oh but Nerine, you know this table is next to worthless. Who would really care. Tell those Healers to stop getting water and blood all over them and maybe the wood would last longer." He had a point but it would not be recieved well. Things always seemed to work that way. "Better yet, have them try to fix it when they know very well, its beyond repair."
He set his beautiful, quick hands to work though, despite the table being unfixable. He had a way to get it from wobbling for now. The drudge measured the legs and after figuring out how much of the wood of the smallest leg had eroded off, he cut the other three to size. When he was finished, a few minutes later, he looked back over at Nerine. "There." He had proved his worth yet again.
"So Nerine, hos have you been? Haven't seen you in a while. They aren't keeping you too busy around here are they?" Rory was overly friendly with nearly everyone. It was his nature. There probably wasn't a person at the Weyr who knew him that disliked him. Including past lovers. The only person who had ever hated him, also loved him. He knew there was one subject she would like to hear about. "You really ought to come see Gadget, my canine. He's grown! Amneris said he won't get his full coat till he's at least two, cause that's when Tipp did."

She half laughed at his suggestion, before eyeing him as sternly as the sixteen year old was capable of.
“Well I shall have to remind you of that next time you are in here bleeding.” The spark in her eyes belying the humor in her words. She watched in admiration as he set to work repairing the table he deemed a lost cause. When he was satisfied with his work she grinned. As much as he complained about the old table she knew he had to feel a certain satisfaction in fixing the thing otherwise he would have already tossed it in the fire pits.
At the mention of being too busy she inhaled sharply. “Not too busy truth be known I’m glad of the work, it keeps my mind off of other things.” Her expression saddened ever so slightly, but she wouldn’t be upset today. At mention of his Canine she brightened instantly.
Nerine grinned “How’s he taken to training, I know when you got him as a pup he still had problems with the concept of the bathroom being outside.” She giggled happily.

He grinned and nodded. Rory wasn't generally one to get injured but he used to more often, when he had been on the drink. Now however, he hadn't been in the infirmiry since he had taken Nishor for his check up. "Oh. Well you know, Neory is a nice girl. I'm sure you'd have gotten along with her. Weyr raised too. And don't worry there will be other chances." Rory said encouragingly. Then switched back off of the topic. It wasn't one that needed to be talked of after all, it had been over a turn since Sheluth hatched. Last clutch no girls had been allowed to stand.
Rory felt for them but he understood the reasoning behind that decision. Some people in the Weyr might feel it was an anti woman thing to do. Rory didn't. He felt that it was what was best for the survival of the Weyr. Even a drudge could see how low their numbers had gotten, especially among the youths of the Weyr.
"Gadget is the most obedient canine I've ever seen. I highly recommend one to you. Too bad you Candidates aren't allowed pets. The best part about having him is he gaurds Nishor. The baby adores him. It is nice having a family finally." Rory smiled to himself. He was thirty four and certainly not getting younger. He had a one turn old son and his lover back and a canine. Rory couldn't think of anything else that would make him happier.

She did grin widely at the mention of Neroy, and smiled brightly.
“I’m sure I’d get along with anyone who could straighten your hide out.” She teased. Her eyes darkened at his next words, but she simply shrugged them off. She understood the reason, but it made the situation no less painful. If she didn’t impress she had already decided she would become apprentice to a healer somewhere. Of course after the illness it seemed all anyone wanted girls to do was breed, something she had very little interest in at the moment.
She was grateful for the subject change, there was no use debating over something she had no control over. Besides she was starting to enjoy life as an assistant to the healers. She smiled as he mentioned a pet and she felt another pang though she didn’t let it show. And instead grinned all the wider.
“Nishor is darling, and gadget has to be a blessing on that front.” She smiled recalling the bouncing baby boy who was a delightful mixture of both his parents. She smiled t Rory’s last words, “It seems as if has done you a lot of good.” She answered simply, retaining a sweet smile. She glanced back over the infirmary and shook her head. “I am going to miss the peace and quiet when Adeloth rises. You know there are going to be some embarrassing consequences round here when she does.” She sighed It was a side effect of dragon’s mating the rest of the world often dealt with rather embarrassing results.

"Well I really don't know the girl all that well. Besides my greenriding lover is quite enough to keep me on my best behavior." If that was not enough he had Nishor to think of. He didn't really think that anyone could understand the complexity of his relationship with N'zule, especially not a woman as young as Nerine. When she grew older she would see how terrible they were. Love was the worst.
"His mother is a dear girl. I'd like to think he has all our good qualities and none of our bad ones. I think that is what every parent hopes. My sister, Allior, has three daughters who all seem like her but are very different. I just hope he doesn't grow up so quickly." Rory enjoyed being a father as much as he thought he would, if not more. Absently, he nodded. "I doubt that there are a better pair of beings to live with and take care of. Granted I'm no dragonrider."
He laughed, his beautifully melodic laugh. Rory was not the normal drudge, he had plenty of wit to go with his mechanical mind. "I wouldn't call them embarrassing. Fun, perhaps. I think its going to be a good time. You might want to lock yourself away, lest some dragorider comes looking for you with those blue eyes of yours." He was teasing, much like an older brother or close friend would. That didn't mean they were actually that close, but Rory was known to be overly friendly with all people.

“Yeah I suppose it would take several to keep you in check though.” She grinned mischievously. Sometimes she really was too much like her father. Neory that was a woman she needed to speak with.
“If only all offspring could inherit the good. I am afraid I ended up with my mother’s emotions my father’s sense of humor and both of their tempers. “ she chuckled. “Nor am I Rory, but dragonriders aren’t much for caring for their young. They take a lesson from the dragons and hand them off to those who are more qualified.”
Nerine raised an eyebrow at the statement. “I’ve survived this long with no incident.” She grinned. Truth be known she had very little experience in that realm. She wondered if she would pick up a lover or if it was something worth the efforts.

"You'd like to think that, but I only need one. Greenriders can be very persuasive you know." Rory spoke from experience. The only two men he had had good relationships with had been greenriders. N'zule was the only man he truly loved and he knew that beyond any doubt. "They may have a bit of a temper but they are very pleasant to look on..."
Rory liked people who were good looking, not that that was any suprise. He surrounded himself with people who he fit with. Even his sister was attractive. Maybe he didn't realize he did it but he did. The drudge was only vain when it came to how other people percieved him. How he perceived himself was never a worry to him. "I'd rather take care of my own child anyway. I'm glad Nisha gave me the chance." Nisha was after all a greenrider and had every right to choose where the child be raised and by whom.
"Now now, wheres the fun in that Nerine! Your breaking some poor man's heart as we speak. Just wait till your older then they will really be sorry for not knowing you sooner. Before you become picky." Dragonriders might have more choice but Rory never found that to be a bad thing for him. Attractive people could always find friends when it came to flight lusts. Rory also knew how to control himself, although he didn't always exercise that control.

Nerine giggled at his statement, dark curls bouncing as she laughed. “Indeed, but If I put all my stock in looks where would that put me?” she grinned.
“I would say she chose well from what I’ve seen of the little tyke. He grows like a weed.” Nerine wondered if she would ever allow herself to have children. Dismissing the thought firmly she decided not, she would be a dragon rider. Too much time between for little ones to grow in her.
Nerine burst into rolling peals of laughter. “Ah Rory and who’s heart would that be? None I’m sure that couldn’t find someone better to warm their beds.” She giggled.
Maybe she would find someone at some point, but for the moment she had no suitors, at least that she was aware of. She was curious though she wouldn’t outright admit it.

"In someone's bed and you could later tell me where I could find one just like him." Rory stiffled a laugh. He knew she was trying to avoid what must obviously happen at some point. "I hear Bronzeriders are known to be attractive, though none of them would be interested in me..." For all that Bronzeriders had the reputation for being attractive, none of them were interested in men. It was a pity. At least to him, where the women of the Weyr were probably thrilled.
He couldn't say that she was right or wrong. His own son, was just that. Rory considered himself a good father, by Weyr standards. Though for the rest of Pern he might still be seen as abad one, if only because his sexual preferences led him toward men so the boy would never have a mother that was constantly there. Nisha would always be there when he had need though. Rory would make sure the boy knew that.
"If I knew Nerine, I'd have already introduced you." Though he was a simple drudge, Rory knew a fair number of people and plenty that enjoyed the company of others. If someone was interested in someone he knew, he didn't hesitate. Love was just as important as the other things in life, if not more important. Lust might get mixed up in it sometimes but he failed to see how having a little fun while looking for love was such a bad thing.

Nerine’s cheeks reddened as she laughed. Her smile a mixture of uncertain embarrassment and genuine humor, it did not entirely reflect the range of conflicting emotions she felt. It wasn’t as much as she didn’t want a lover as much as it was, she wanted the right lover.
“Why Rory, the problem with that statement is quite simple most of them would be interested in you any way and none would give me a second look!” She teased. “As for bronze riders most are too busy bedding their ambition to be of any real value.”
She grinned “All the interesting men seem to be boy lovers, leaving those of us who don’t have golden hides attached in want. “ What she didn’t say was that she wanted to be a little more than a bed warmer; she wanted something more though what she couldn’t say.

At her blush he realized he was pushing too much, sure he had been joking but it seemed he had struck a nerve. Best not to keep on this subject much longer. "In that case better not let N'zule know that half the Weyr finds me attractive." He was of course jesting. Rory was attractive but he was no dragonrider and he didn't care to exercise as much as they did.The drudge looked around the increasingly empty infirmiry.
He shook his head, "Thats probably because you want something more than they want. I've been there myself. They are easy to fall in love with but it seems harder to have that feeling reciprocated. It may be because they know themselves to be attractive and know they can get away with having more than one lover at a time if they wish. I seem to no longer be able to keep up with those sorts. I've only been truly interested in one man for the last couple Turns and he is the hardest to keep."
Rory went back to a more light hearted subject. This love stuff was a pain. "Don't worry, the right man will come along and when he does, you'll ensnare him. Women are very good at that..." He grinned. Allior would punch him in the arm if she heard that and he half expected Nerine to do something similiar.

Nerine laughed warmly at his jest though had the urge to point out that a little healthy competition might remind N’zule that he wasn’t the only attractive one in the weyr. She did not say this however as Rory continued on.
Did she really want more than most of the dragonriders did? Weyr bred, she understood the looser social structure, that most did not pair for long spans. She was beginning to wonder if she really did want to be a dragon rider after all. The queens had to mate whoever their dragons chose, it was the same with the greens. Nerine had never lain with a man, and couldn’t imagine doing so only as a result of the passion of a dragon flight.
At his last words she was uncertain of how to react, she needed time to digest her thoughts. “Well thank you Rory, but I have tasks to attend to now. Wonderful job with the table and I hope to see you again, though preferably to fix a table rather than be on it.” Her tone was dismissive and she went back to stocking the shelves. She would listen if he had anything further to say but at the moment she needed to think. [end or end on your post?]
