“…He once again slid my ring into place on the third finger of my left hand,
where it would stay -- conceivably for the rest of eternity…”
where it would stay -- conceivably for the rest of eternity…”
Bella Swan finally married Edward Cullen in the middle of August; the wedding was an exuberant affair, full of dancing and merriment - thanks to the wonderful Alice. However, over a month later things have taken quite a turn in the quaint, little town of Forks.
There’s sadness in the air as everyone says their farewells and departs for college; with their high school education now behind them, it’s time for the students to move on and start a fresh. Charlie’s less-than thrilled at Bella’s shotgun decision to move to Alaska with Edward, and he’s becoming highly suspicious of her vague attitude. One of Charlie’s many contacts within the force has been asked to do the chief a favour; one that could potentially ruin everybody’s lives.
Through their daily correspondence, Bella has learned that her mother and Phil have finally adopted a child; much to Bella’s dismay. Part of her thinks that what they’ve done is wrong because Renée is in no fit state to look after a child, but the other part of her resents the child for ‘taking her place’. Before Bella had moved out, Renée and Phil came to visit one last time, bringing with them all of Bella’s belongings and Molly Dwyer; a six year old who knows far more than she should.
After a week of moving in with the Cullen’s, Bella has now been turned, her power is that of great strength, making her even more talented than Edward; something she’s been waiting for since she first met him. Bella is reluctant to move to Alaska because she claims that she can’t be too far from Charlie, even though she can’t physically talk to him. The truth is, Tanya’s been calling a little too often for her liking, offering to help Bella ‘warm’ to their way of life; but why is she so enthusiastic to help?
Unfortunately for Bella, the transformation hasn’t seemed to soften Rosalie; but instead, it’s made her more hateful. Now, she barely speaks to anyone, least of all Bella. On the other hand, Alice is thrilled that now she and Bella can spend a lot more time together and leave the country without fear of upsetting Charlie and being charged with kidnapping. Initially, Edward felt guilty for what he had done to Bella, but now he’s starting to accept that what’s done is done; and there’s no changing that.
Upon hearing of Bella’s transformation, Aro is delighted to learn of her special ability too; his intention to visit is, of course, entirely dishonourable. The Volturri and their guard are coming to Forks to meet with the newly-turned Bella, in an attempt to get her to join and remain with them in Volterra. However, this sparks an unexpected feud between Carlisle and Aro, forcing the Cullen’s into red-alert before their ‘guests’ have even arrived. But what if the Volturri get to Bella first? Will she choose to leave with them, or will she remain loyal to the Cullen’s?
Jacob Black attended the Swan-Cullen wedding with hopes that Bella would realise her mistake and run away with him; sadly, it just wasn’t meant to be. Now, though, Jacob’s found a new object of his affections thanks to the Imprinting process. She’s beautiful, the same age, and reminds him of Bella: a perfect combination. However, a week before this new discovery, Sam Uley went missing, throwing the Werewolves into a state of panic. One night, after hours of searching the entire La Push forest, Paul came stumbling home with a lifeless Sam in his arms; dead at the scene, according to Jared. The only visible marks on his body were a few scratches on his arms and a large, open wound on his neck that signalled only one thing to Jacob: the treaty had been broken.
On the night of Sam Uley’s death , Edward left with Carlisle, Jasper, Alice, Emmett and Esme to go hunting, reluctantly leaving Rosalie to ‘baby-sit’ Bella. With their disappearance, Bella was left to do as she pleased and took full advantage of not having a minder breathing down her neck 24/7. Returning home hours later, Bella collapsed in the living room, her clothes drenched in blood but when she awoke, she couldn’t remember a thing.
Did Bella kill Sam Uley? Or did a Volturri guard decide to come early? Either way, it’s sparked a war between the werewolves and the vampires; a war that will inevitably spark the end of one of their existences.
