A Weyrwoman and her gold lost to childbirth... A Weyrleader retired into seclusion with his grief... One clutch on the sands, with another gold on the verge of rising... A Weyr that lies in turmoil, leaderless, eyed with trepidation by all of Pern... Welcome to Caufar, my friends.
Weyrwoman Seramid is dead. Though not old, her body could not handle the birth of her child, an event that also left the infant in the cold clutches of death. The Weyr mourned deeply, but not just because they'd lost a beloved leader. With Seramid's death, they also lost their stability; K'nel, the former Weyrleader, fled to Telgar in his grief. Traditionally, the Junior Queenrider and her Junior Weyrleader would step up in the interim, waiting for the next queen to rise, for things to settle into a new routine.
Tradition, it seems, is being challenged. Belarth is bound to the Hatching Grounds, having clutched quite literally the night before the tragedy, and her rider, Megrienne, feels that it entitles her to a more permanent position. There are those that agree; after all, the only other gold of mating age is a scant Turn out of Weyrlinghood. Megrienne has more experience in leading a Weyr than Araceli and her golden Alorioth, and despite bearing the blame of chasing out the former Weyrleader, she is a popular figure.
Others, though, demand that tradition be upheld. Alorioth will undoubtedly be the first gold to rise, and Araceli has much support from the Weyrfolk. She and her queen are Caufaran-bred, after all, while Megrienne and Belarth are Istan transfers. There is some concern, however, as to her preference of partners. Her current Junior Weyrleader can't stand her, nor she him, but they generally prefer T'brias and his Caufaran-born bronze Ahanarith over the transferred F'trik and his brown Marshanth, Megrienne's current Junior. Of course, the Weyrfolk can gossip for hours about her relationship with bronze rider I'vrae, thinking his Voltureth will be the next winner... which again is cause for complaint, as they are from the same clutch that hatched Alorioth.
Who will emerge as Caufar's new leading pair? Alorioth is beginning to glow, but none can discount Megrienne's considerable talents of manipulation. Will she be able to convince the Conclave to permanently instill her as Weyrwoman of Caufar, thereby disregarding tradition?
Caufar Weyr is a new, alternate Tenth Pass Weyr, set with play beginning in the 30th Turn of the Pass, and we are looking for fresh, inspired and inspiring members to come and play along with us in a game rife with political turmoil and a wide variety of character interactions. If this sounds like something you might like to get involved with, here's some basic info to let you know what we're all about.
- We are Tenth Pass, as previously stated, in which AIVAS was not discovered, so the majority of events in books published after Renegades of Pern (including Todd's material) is not canon for us.
- We are located on the Southern Continent, a specific map is available on our site.
- We use an online forum-based posting format for our writing.
- We allow for women to impress gold, green, blue, and VERY RARELY brown (more detailed Impression info is available at our site).
Curious? Questions? Feel free to drop by and have a look around, check things out for yourself, and come meet the crowd.
