Triali Weyr
After Pern had moved to the Northern Continent, and the new Weyrs were beginning to be formed, a bronze rider who was still stationed at Fort Weyr became restless. His bronze had never caught the gold and he had never even been given the position of wingleader. He was tired of just being another wingsecond and he was tired of not getting the respect that he knew he deserved. So he devised a plan, quite suicidal and quite immoral, but a plan nonetheless to gain the respect that he wanted.
Late one night, only four sevendays after the hatching, the deviant bronzerider, L'tu, snuck into the female weyrling barracks and drugged the new goldrider. Thankfully, she didn't wake up or put up a fight as he bundled up both her and her dragon in warm furs and loaded them, much like cargo, onto his large dragon. Into the night they flew, guided by nothing besides L'tu's blind ambition. Thankfully, though, a place to rest was found before Jiian and her dragon awakened. And, surprisingly enough, the maze of caves and openings was suitable for a weyr. A rare place to find, but the nearby river had carved the paradise out of the Southern stone.
Although the current Fort weyrleaders did look for Jiian, the goldrider, they would never have guessed that the bronze rider and forty other riders had gone back to the Southern, and did not look for them there. In all actuality, they had to give up, as Thread was Falling to frequently for Search parties to be sent out and any distance covered. And, well...it was a sad day when Jiian and her golden Kreath were forgotten.
In the meantime, L'tu had his work cut out for him. He had to change the headstrong Jiian into a goldrider he could control and use. He was teaching her the way to be a true Weyrwoman...and that meant leaving everything of importance to him, as Weyrleader, while taking some trivial things to do, like assigning watches and foraging. And although Kreath was contacted a few times by her golden mother, she never gave away their location.
Jiian was changed into a surprisingly meek little creature, thanks to L'tu's teachings. She could be strong if she wanted to…but, with her Weyrleader to take care of everything, there was really no need. And so she became much like a little, naive weyrbrat, who happened to have a dragon-sized golden flitter. The only problem with this, is that when Kreath, her gold, went to Fly…Jiian didn’t have the will power to stop her from tearing out the meaty innards of her meal.
The Flight was short, and even though L'tu's large bronze Caught her, the clutch was incredibly small, and there was no queen egg…and only a single bronze.
This proved to be terribly problematic, seeing as how they were in a middle of a Pass, they were independent from the other Weyrs, and they needed as many dragons as possible. So, instead of risking their girls to impression of a silly green when they could be Weyrwomen, only men that L'tu Searched from northern holds stood on the Sands…and every single dragonet who hatched impressed.
This went on at the next Hatching, too – there was still no golden egg, and the clutch was small enough so that they didn’t need to put any females on the sands. And, again, every dragonet impressed.
This gradually became a way of life. Girls were fit to ride queens – not fighting dragons! And when, finally, a golden egg was laid, it was put off in a completely different corner of the hatching grounds, so that the other dragonets, when they hatched, would not see any girls. The only one this bothered was the queens who laid them -- they roosted in the middle, and the candidates had to maneuver around them.
And all the eggs hatched, every dragonet, besides the queen, impressed male – except for a single brown, who didn’t impress at all, and went between. The gold hatched, impressed to a strong-willed girl…and the wonder of this new-found ‘rule’ was relished. This was the best way to do it, after all!
200 Turns passed, and the Triali inhabitants were in the middle of the Interval. There was a single female green rider – Rina of Green Yokath. She was thoroughly disliked, and the entire Weyr practically shunned her and her dragon, while they thanked Faranth that they didn’t have Threadfall right then…what would they have done, then?
Rina, the soul, finally could not take it. Yokath Flew frequently, and whenever she was Caught, the morning after was awful. How could they have slept with the vermin?!?! Finally, it got to the point where only the most desperate, flight-loving creatures Chased, and Rina began to lock herself in her weyr. She rejoiced as she and Yokath got older, and they finally took the trip between, never to appear again.
300 turns came and went and only a few female riders marred the existence of the weyr. The men held the monopoly on Impression and the women kept the the weyr caverns, making food and babies. There were flukes such as Rina when women had to Stand to try and Impress a gold, but they were shunned until they all eventually betweened prematurely. The weyr was better without them and the controversey they caused anyway.
Gold Rider Areca and her dragon, Nialith, are now Senior Weyrwoman. The retired Weyrwoman, Cina of Golden Olith, recently stepped down and found the overwhelming comfort of between, and there is a Junior Weyrwoman eager to step up…although that’s not likely to happen any time soon!
Areca and Nialith were instructed, and believe, in the history of their ancestors – who couldn’t see the reason in preserving the female candidates for the gold? However, in her second clutch, one female Impressed from where she stood arranging the food for the dragonets on the tables. This girl is the center of much controversy, but Nialith refuses to let anyone harm the pair. Her attention on them is quickly waning, though, because she is egg-heavy, and all focus is on the next clutch and when it is to appear on the Sands.
