The mottled egg was beginning to convulse to a point, where Larissa was concerned. The riders didn't say how far along the eggs were. She had not expected this so soon. Lara had run to the kitchens and grabbed meat, for babies were always hungry. That much she had learned growing up at the Weyr. When she was on her way back to her own room, the egg's convulsions grew much harder. She decided to stop, just outside her mother's office. Better here than some random corridor.
Firelizards were a complete mystery to the young beauty. Most of Pern believed them to be creatures of myth and there was little written of them in the records. Not since the Northern Continent became so well established. It made her dreamier side wonder if that meant Shipfish too existed.
Her excitement was hard to contain as she watched the egg. The shell was beginning to form hairline fracutures. The moment she had been waiting days for was now upon her. This day was forever going to be in her mind! Oh she hoped the other eggs were hatching now too! This was amazing... so amazing. She'd have one of the few firelizards on Pern! That is if the firelizard impressed to her. Oh, Faranth let the little one like her.

Kia was working on some paper work when the slight sound of movement caught her attention. She turned to see the egg beginning to move and it took her only a moment to process that the egg was beginning to hatch! She stuck her head outside her quarters and called for one of the drudges who were stationed for running errands for her and Janesa. "Go get meat. Raw meat. I'll need a bucket and so will Janesa and Larissa, and make sure that someone takes some to Junior Weyrwoman Jenafa! Go, boy. NOW!"
She did not realize that Lara had gone to get her own meat, with rank came certain privileges, and Kia did not want to miss a moment of her little egg's hatching. But the simple politics that she had trained herself in meant that she would also make sure that Janesa and Janafa had meat for their little ones as well. Kia would not want to leave Lara out, either.
Kiaran, who was not interested in having a serious relationship yet, much less in becoming a mother, paced as she watched the egg wobble and shake. She had no idea how long it was taking. Nor did she know what was keeping the boy from showing up with her meat! Time really had no sense at the moment, except that the boy was taking too long.
She remembered the jerky that Janesa had suggested she keep on hand and found that, though she kept looking between the egg and the door. Surely, fresh meat would be better?
Not much more could have been expected of the boy considering that he not only had to get her meat, but grab help to get meat to the other three as well, as well as waiting for it to be cut to take it to them. He came back as quickly as he could and handed the bucket to the impatient Assistant Headwoman who took it from with a brief word of thanks and dismissal and moved to sit by the egg, picking up the raw meat and posing to feed the little one as soon as it emerged.

The egg shook more and more violently till what were small cracks became larger. A small brown head broke out of the shell. The keening of the small one was enough to make Larissa come out of her immediate shock. He looked a bit stuck but she shouldn't help him. That wasn't what they were supposed to do with dragons and she doubted firelizards were much different.
The brown was growing quite annoyed with his situation and found the strength to break more of the shell, enough of it that he could fit his body through. One wing got caught on the egg once more and he flapped it in irritation. When he finally freed himself he stumbled. It was cold out here and he was hungry. What on earth was this huge creature in front of him. He eyed up Larissa and smelled the meat in her extended hand.
"Come on little one, you must eat." The brown looked at her as she spoke. Then he made another strange noise before snatching the meat from her. It was his food and he was starving. He ate, immediately wanting more. the greedy little brown ate with vigor and eventually wound up in Larissa's lap, munching happily to his hearts content. His little eyes a whirling blue.

Janesa came rushing, and found her own egg rocking away. This was it! There were no fakes! Oh, what a joyous day this was turning out to be! Janesa was watching with wide eyes, stareing down at the egg with intent. It was hatching, and nothing could stop it. She only hoped these things bonded, or else the poor little greenrider was not going to see a half-mark.
The boy returned with meat that Kiaran had ordered. Good, smart, Kiaran. She wondered briefly, that if things with her son didn't work out, and frankly she wasn't sure if he was ready to fly a queen just yet (despite him being her favorite, he was quite young) she wondered if he would make a good pair with Kiaran. She was young and pretty, and if she was attatched to J'var, Kiaran wouldn't dare upsurp Janesa. Interesting idea, maybe she'd have to have them meet. J'var would be kind and hospitable if she ordered him to be.
While she was thinking the egg hatched, revealing a nice sized green. She didn't have anything to gage it on, but it was smaller than her daughters brown. WHAT?! Larissa's egg was a brown! Outrageous! But she became too busy with feeding the green firelizard to worry about it too much. "Eat, little one, that's it, eat to your heart's content."

Kiaran bit her lip and paced, though she was a little calmer now that she had meat on hand for when the the egg finally stopped rocking and actually hatched. She had lost all sense of time, and to her it seemed as if the egg had been rocking forever, and had dropped from her posed position to pace.
And then a crack formed, and from it the egg spider-web cracked from there. When the crack had appeared, Kiaran had stopped pacing. Instead, she had stopped and intently watched. When it spider veined, it occurred to her to pick the meat back up and be ready with with. It was not lung until the egg shattered a beautiful little blue struggled out of the remaining egg.
As soon as it was free, Kiaran was feeding it meat, until it willing came into her arms and she continue feeding it, though not wanting to over stuff it. "Hi little one. You're beautiful."

Larissa looked down at the brown, still a bit shocked that this was actually happening and to her! She walked the rest of the way into her mother's office. "I... they... I mean, aren't they amazing?" She watched as her little brown snuggled into the crook of her arm.
"Whatever are we to do with them now?" She finally noted that her mother had a green and Kiaran a blue. Interesting. She never really did care about rank as it related to color. Briefly she wondered if a brown would be better at tasks than a green or blue? That shouldn't even matter.
The little one was just a baby and she wasn't too sure he would want to do anything like carry messages and she really didn't know what sort of things he could actually do. There were stories but that was simply myth and could easily be wrong.
"Whatever will I name him?"

Kiaran joined the others, carrying her beautiful little Blue. "Janesa, you're green is gorgeous."
Kiaran shrugged slightly. "I think for now we just take care of them. Feed them, baby them, continue to bond with them. I've suggested that when they get a bit older we see if we can get one of the Green Riders to teach us how to train them."
"He's so cute, Lara. A Brown! Congratulations!" She snuggled her own little Blue.
Though then at Lara's question she blinked and looked between her and Janesa. "Don't Dragons choose their own names. I... I don't know."
