V'nes had decided that the time had definitely come for him to speak with M'ren concerning the question of Nariath's maturity. He knew how difficult limiting his relationship with K'sah had been for him, and he imagined that it was even difficult for the very tactile Green Weyrling.
So it was that V'nes, feeling oddly nervous, had come to M'ren's office to talk to him about this. He had let K'sah know when he would be meeting with the Weyrling Master, and told him that if he wanted to join him, he was welcome to do so. After all, the matter specifically involved him and he did not want K'sah to think that they were talking about him without him.
Taking a deep breath, the Candidate Master knocked on the door to M'ren's office.

M'ren, busy with planning the newest Weyrling's lessons, was not surprised when a knock emanated from beyond his door. He could almost sense a connection between rank, and being interrupted during work. It didn't really bother him though, as a headache was starting to build under his forehead, and he'd much rather talk to a Weyrling in need of direction than try and decipher what the last three WLM's had though about firestone training, or Betweening.
"Come in!" M'ren called out, putting the worn hides down. He straightened his shirt, and looked up at the door. He smiled in welcome to whomever was going to enter into his domain. He hoped they would cause anymore headaches.

V'nes entered, looking kind of sheepish. "Hi, M'ren. I hope I'm not interrupting anything too important, but I really needed to talk to you. And I kind of think that I've put it off long enough."
He walked in and smiled to the man. "How's it going. I know you kind of got this position thrust on you." Not really trying to delay so much as giving K'sah a chance to get there before going into the details. Well, kinda.

Something he'd put off far to long? Well, he couldn't be talking about the new Weyrlings. Most of them had already been discussed, being previous candidates, the spare new ones hadn't been in the Weyr long enough for either of them to know them very well.
But, M'ren supposed this was his first time being a Weyrling Master from the beginning, so maybe there was something special that was suppose to happen. But if V'nes wanted to chat before hand, it couldn't be deadly serious. Which was nice.
"Well, I'm getting used to it. I would like to go beg off a few helpers from the Wings though. Or perhaps hold on to one of the Older Weyrlings, but I can't think of any who'd appreciate that. A11 will be flying for the first time this week, with solo flights, and I'm looking for good advice before sending them up. More to this job than I expected."
M'ren smiled, though it did little to keep him from looking gruff. "And how is your job? It must be hard to have so few candidates."

V'nes nodded. "It is. Not only is it a matter of so few Candidates, but so very many eggs each time. I almost feel as if the little Green who betweened is my fault, though I know that its not." He sighed, "Fortunately, we have some time before the next clutching and hatching. I have to hope we'll have more by then."
He fiddled for a moment and then helped himself to a seat. "I'm sure you should be able to find a Wing Rider who could help. Though I'm not sure who at the moment."
A deep breath, "I'm stalling. I need to ask you about Nariath's maturity. Do you think she is at a point where she would be able to handle K'sah having any kind of physical attachment to another person?"

M'ren nodded in agreement about the Green. He felt the same way when Weyrlings Betweened for good. The tragic accidents weighed heavy on his soul, even though he knew that accidents always happened, to even the very best WLM. Even to him. It was a depressing thought, and he tried not to focus on it much.
Nor did he really pay much attention to the idea of absconding with a Wingrider. He would, soon enough.
But the next statement he did pay attention to. Nariath was in A11, who were close to actually flying, though had the sickness not struck, they'd be past that stage already. Some of the more precocious Greens would likely be flying before long, and the males soon able to follow.
"It really depends on the dragon, but as a general statement, I'd say that she could handle her rider have close friends, maybe even a former Weyrmate." M'ren raised a finger. "But only if that Weyrmate was stable, and they weren't about to be breaking up and getting back together all of the time. That would be horrible for the dragon, and I'd have both pair on Watch and Latrine duty, at different times, for the rest of their lives." M'ren shrugged. "That is why we usually only allow weyrmates from before they impressed to be part of the Weyrlings lives. We know what the relationship is going to be like."
M'ren glanced at V'nes with puzzlement. "Why? Did K'sah have a Weyrmate before he Impressed?"

"I see." He heart sunk at that and he had to take a moment to close his eyes and take a deep breath. He could wait longer, as hard as it was, but he wondered if K'sah could. For a brief moment, he ran his hand through his hair.
"No, he did not have a former weyrmate." He shook his head, trying to keep the pain from showing on his face now that his moment of dealing with the news had passed. "And I guess it will be even longer before he has one."
He tried not to think about how his Kael would respond to this news. He knew how hard it had been on up to this point. He almost wished he hadn't said anything to the boy to start with, the disappointment might be worse.
"And after Nariath flies? Will she be able to handle him having a relationship then?"

M'ren leaned forward, looking at V'nes intently. His eyes narrowed slightly, and he wondered if his initial analysis had been off. What if K'sah hadn't asked V'nes to talk to him after all.
"V'nes, as a Weyrling Master, I'm never going to want to encourage my students to have relationships. Weyrlings should be worked so hard that they don't have enough energy left over for such relationships- and with them not at the stage that they've been to Between there is a very large risk that someone will die during Between."
M'ren paused, and cleared his throat. "Everything introduced to a Weyrling's life is carefully observed by the Weyrling Master. K'sah's in a delicate state, and I don't need him getting involved with another like his brother. Everything is subjective: so you need to tell me, who'd the possible Weyrmate of K'sah?"

V'nes closed his eyes as M'ren voiced his worse fear. It took him a moment to get passed that, as the last thing he wanted was for Nariath and K'sah to between, much less for it to be his fault. He had hoped that danger had passed, but if M'ren did not believe that it had, then they would have to continue to wait.
"I am." It was a simple admission. Nothing complicated. No need to embellish it. "And yes, I am well aware of how inappropriate that is, nor did I intend for this to happen."

Had M'ren been a lesser man, he would have choked at V'nes' declaration. Had he been closer to the state he'd been in when he'd first come from the Hold, he might have spoken softly, and tried to get away from the man lover. Turns as a Weyrling Master's assistant had cured him of most of his nasty habits, so he did nothing but nod, and contemplate.
At least it was V'nes, and not another older rider. He wasn't especially close with the candidate master, but he wouldn't force himself on a boy, and he knew the dangers of Weyrlinghood almost as well as himself.
"I'll not lecture." M'ren shrugged. "I trust you not to do anything foolish." The short man tilted his head the side, and considered something. "As a Weyrling Master, I urge you to wait until he's out of Weyrlinghood to try anything. As myself, M'ren, I wish you good luck, and hope you can find a safe way to be in a relationship that will only help K'sah along with his training."

"I have no desire to hurt him at all, M'ren. But waiting is so hard, and if you know how tactile K'sah is, you would realize that its much more difficult for him than it is for me." V'nes prided himself on his self-control, yet this young man did so much to completely undo him. He knew that K'sah did not realize how hard it was for the Candidate Master, that he didn't fully understand why V'nes limited their touches and even their kisses, and V'nes was ok with that, but it was hard.
He sighed and nodded, "Thank you, M'ren. I swear to you that I will do nothing to jeopardize him, even if that means keeping the same tight restrictions that he resents. He's safe with me. That is one of my top priorities."

M'ren gave the man a smile. "Then be tactile- to a certain extent. And, I'd say it's probably safer to for K'sah to be near his dragon if he's going to be giving off strong emotions. Then she can see he's not being hurt."
A decisive nod. "And you should make sure to talk to him before you try and thing new, and run it by his dragon. Remember though, I don't want to hear you've been doing anything with him. This should be one of the best kept secrets in the Weyr."
M'ren was serious. His job was already on the line because of his drinking- an open relationship would be the final straw, or so he felt.

Well, actually, the relationship had been known of by the previous Weyrling Master. And V'nes usually was very careful, though he was pretty sure that there were those who did know the "secret." "Don't worry, M'ren. I'll keep it limited. Though even cuddling might make it easier on K'sah then it has been." After a moment he smiled, "And easier on myself as well."
"And I don't want to jeopardize your job either. We'll be discreet." He smiled, "Thank you."

"No problem. See you around." And M'ren turned back to his paperwork, trying to decide if he'd done the right thing or not. He supposed it would have been better to be a Bronzerider. Those riders always seemed so sure of themselves.
But being a Brownrider was even better, because he had Thoth, and no other dragon was as good as his own. Hoping that K'sah and V'nes worked out their relationship, and didn't start any drama until after K'sah graduated, M'ren continued reading about flying, unsure of where his headache had gone.
