It began with a rift. A disturbance in time and space. It was just what Mephistopheles had been waiting for. Gathering his armies of the damned, he sent one through the rift, his own son Blackheart. Bound in mortal form, the demon engaged any wand all heroes he could. His goal was simple. He was not to defeat them, but he himself to be defeated. And killed.
One among them obliged. And unknowingly unleashed Hell.
As Blackheart’s demonic soul was sent back to Mephistopheles’s realm, with rift became a tear. A hole that Mephistopheles widened. The skies over New York ran blood red. Mephistopheles’s demons, accompanied by dead souls resurrected in service to the Dark Lord poured out from the tear. Their number was vast, and they overwhelmed the heroes.
Dr. Strange, Sorcerer Supreme and last line of defense against the invasion fell in mortal combat with Mephistopheles himself. Claiming his artifacts, Mephistopheles set out to slaughter and all who knew how to use magic. Man, mutant, hero and villain, all fell before the Prince of Lies.
Now, it is five years later. The skies still run red, and Mephistopheles rules all he surveys. The ruins of New York stand testament to that day, the hole between the reams still open above its skies. Few buildings remain, and those that do serve as homes for those mortals who have pledged service to Mephistopheles.
But even in Earth’s darkest hour, hope remains. A handful of heroes, lead by one of the last surviving sorcerers, Jennifer Kale, seek to restore the earth to the way it once was. These are the Earth's last hope…
