A rare night it was when Jazira did not go to bed. She had been up half the night, reading. The night before she had been all nerves and unable to even contemplate sleep. There was so much going on and she felt a bit detached from the rest of Pern lately. So in the middle of the night she had decided that Bitra should hold a Gather. This of course led her to figuring out expenses and such.
She was very good with money, never spending more than needed. Not that they would ever run out, but she liked people to think that the Holder's were looking out for their best interests. By not asking for as many marks come tithe time it made the people happy. When the people were happy they were more productive and whent there was more production, the Hold made money.
She was sleeping soundly when a tottling three turn old escaped her nannies and found her mother. Havala took no time at all to climb up the chair and snuggle with her sleeping mother. Hava was the youngest thus far and was completely spoiled.
The Lady's personal drudges had been looking high and low for her and when they did finally find her they thought it best not to disturb her. It always amazed them how calm she could seem while sleeping but how demanding and harsh she could be when she was awake. However much they might complain about ehr attitude they had to say she did keep the Hold running smoothly, so smoothly rarely was there a mistake made. The two drudges decided it was best to get the kitchen going without the Lady around.

Haydrin had his fair share of restless nights, in fear that a relative, in greed for their own power might try to get rid of him in the night, but these days he was comfortable in the fact that none of his own people conspired against him. His wife had always been excellent on the Hold's financial affairs, there had been no outrageous fighting in his time, and there was no large injustices to his own people that he should worry about a coup or uprising. Yet, this morning of all he woken up near dawn, and failed to find his wife near him. She was not with him all the time, but he often liked to hold her, and found his bedmate absent.
He wondered where she could be, and took their private entry way to her rooms. She was not in her bed either. This bothered him a bit, and wondered wear Jazira could have gotten off too. He dressed quickly, today ind dark greens and rich browns, and ventured to the hall, and asked one of Jazira's serving women where she was. The woman pointed to the study and Haydrin went in, seeing his youngest child and her mother curled up in a chair. He smiled, a beautiful sight, he almost did not want to wake her, but came up to the table and lightly knocked upon it.
"My love? It is nearly dawn, and I was worried about you. Is there anything wrong? You did not come to bed and I missed you, dear wife." He said softly, hoping she'd hear him rousing from sleep. He was slightly concerned.

The woman slept soundly except when not in bed. Thus her husband's voice soon woke her. Brown eyes fluttered open slowly as she registered where she was. She felt something heavy clinging to her so she looked down to see a sleeping three turn old. Wait, who woke her up? She looked up to meet her husband's gaze. "Oh. I can't believe I fell asleep in here." Not that it would be the first time but it was a rare occurance.
"Sorry, darling." She reached her hand out to him. The child moved a little then woke up to see not only her mother but her father. "And when did you get here?" She asked the child sternly, more concerend that she was able to escape watchful eyes than that she was there. The child could have been kidnapped for all the nannies knew.
The child looked up at Jazira innocently then turned her big brown eyes on her father. "Da dee!" She put her arms up in the air so he would pick her up. Havala was a spoiled child but so were her siblings. The children were all very loved. Which was strange coming from two very hard to get along with types of people. Neither Jazira or HAydrin were particularly sweet natured.

"It's alright, as long as I know you are fine, love." He said softly, and took her hand and rubbed it fondly with his thumb. It was then that Haydrin saw his littlest daughter. He frowned deeply only when Jazira implyed that she did not know how the child got there The man always wanted to make sure his family was safe, and little girls sneaking away from her nannies could lead to trouble. The man could not frown for long. He loved children, mostly just his children, and to see the girl look at him with those big brown eyes made him grin.
He gently set his wife's hand down and picked up Hava, as he called her affectionately, and cuddled her close. "Do you know what happens to sassy girls who sneak off in the middle of the night, Hava?" He said sweetly, "They get tickled!" He laughed as he tickled her playfully.

Jazira smiled and watched their youngest child interact with her father. The soft rapping at the door was heard by the Lady first. "Enter." One of their nannies came in. Jazira had a serious look on her face. "In the future be sure that you ahve accounted for all of the children. If you are understaffed see the Headwoman immediately." She spoke all the words in low enough voice that Havala wouldn't hear it.
"Havala time to go get cleaned up for breakfast." Her mother said waiting for the nanny to take the child from her father. She needed to talk with him on what had kept her up all hours of the night. He would have time now before breakfast but later he would be busy and so would she.
"Haydrin, I've been meaning to speak with you..." Jazira didn't normally liek to talk with him about unimportant Hold business but this could be important in the future. "I'd like to hold a Gather. A Midsummer Gather. There are a couple new Holders and I'd really like to see where everyone is standing as far as the Weyrs are concerned." In other words she wanted to practice some diplomacy.

The nannies showed up and the Lord got himself contained and then solomnly handed his child to the nannies. As they walked out Jazira started to speak to him, and for a moment Haydrin looked a little confused. His wife was never a frivolous woman, though he had no objections as long as the treasury could take it, but she had gone on and he smiled. That was his lovely politically minded wife. Jazira was always a clever and practical girl, and that's what made her a good Lady, and he had never once regretted his choice in marrying her over some silly lord's daughter.
"What my love wants, my love gets." He said to her with a wink, "I think that's a brilliant idea, Jaz, you're on the ball. I don't suppose I could sneak off with you half way through like old times?" He grinned mischeiviously at her.

Jazira knew he wouldn't mind but she had never done anything concerning the Hold without his input and permission. She wanted to keep this Hold bussiness as a partnership. Something they were both comfortable doing. Jazira moved closer to her husband, casting him a coquettish look.
She wondered how anyone could get through an entire Gather without sneaking off with one's love interest. "I never sneak..." she grinned, "I merely dissapear for a short while with a very attractive man." Jazira did not say she would dissapear with him at the next Gather, she left that up to his own imagination. Instead she reached up and kissed him.

He grinned as Jazira crept closer to him, and he looked down at her. What a perfect woman she was, and he was once more glad he was with her. She wasn't one to control him too much, and he liked it that way. They worked together, and he thought it was adorable that Jazira asked him for things. He was only too happy to comply.
"I don't sneak." She had said. "Oh?" And he chuckled as she explained. He didn't even notice that she did not confirm or deny his request of her, but instead kissed him. He put his arms around her and kissed her back.

After they were done kissing, Jazira smiled. "We are going to be late for breakfast." Especially if they continued on that frame of mind. She always wanted his company but she had to be the Lady at times and remind herself that duties came first. Today shouldn't be too awful. She would start by examining the Gather grounds.. then assign some drudges to fix and begin deep cleaning the area along with the main Hall.
She would ahve to begin writing invitations. In the afternoon she would check in with the children. Especially the eldest. He was trying very hard to please his father lately. Jazira wondered if Haydrin noticed but decided it wasn't her business as it was between the youth and his father.
"I asked them to make your favorite this morning." Jazira didn't put many special requests on the kitchen but every once in a while she did and she expected there to be no problems making what she wanted.

Haydrin looked dreamy for a second, and when she mentioned breakfast he regained his composture and straightened his collar, "Ah, yes, breakfast. Mustn't miss that." Haydrin knew he had his own responsibilities, not just to his wife but to his hold as well. He wanted to inspect a new runner anyway. He had planned on giving it to his eldest son, though one of the beast masters had said the young stallion was a bit spirited. Haydrin did not want anything to happen to his son, his heir apparent.
She spoke again, interrupting his thoughts, "Hmm? My favo- oh, yes of course darling, thank you. What a thoughtful wife I have." He smiled at her softly, "I wonder what color gown you might like for this gather? A royal blue with gold trim mayhaps? Or perhaps you want to use an old one rather than commission for a new one? A new one might nice though, I do like for you to have nice things." He knew she wasn't a frivolous woman, but he liked to spend some marks on her. He was his Lady after all, and he enjoyed giving gifts.

The Lady was hard to read but she made certain her handsome husband knew what she was thinking. "You do spoil me..." She smiled at him. "A new one might be needed. I think I ruined one last Gather...someone ended up ripping it to get it off." Jazira winked at him.
The two of them were always getting into funny situations. That being one of them. There was no denying how the two felt about eachother. It was a rare find in a Lord and Lady.
"Darling, we should discuss the Gather at breakfast. The children will be excited. Leslow will be most excited. We should let him choose a runner to enter in the races..."Jazira wanted to reward her eldest son. He had been doing so well lately.

"Hmm," Haydrin said, as if he had no idea, and then he smiled, "I wonder who in shells name that could have been. But when I find out I shall punish him." He turned to the contents on the desk, "But you have a new dress commissioned, you should be the finest woman there, too, as hostess."
He nodded to respond to her suggestion of continuing the conversation at breakfast, "Yes, the children will like a gather, I wager, Vega is probably going to be very excited. I remember a young woman I met once at a gather. She was excited to be dancing and to be at the gather. I think actually I took her with me to my father's study and read to her. Good times. . . Good times." He said, remembering for a moment.
"Yes, Leslow, well actually I have gotten him a stallion. Perhaps he should like to enter that one? It is a fine one, grey, a little mottled on the legs and flank. I was going to inspect it after breakfast, would my lady wish to join me? Only the best for our boy." Haydrin said, reading a report on tithing.

As if anyone else could outshine her when she wanted to be the best. She would make certain the gown was fit for her position and the Gather. Jazira smiled, Vega was indeed about her age at her first large Gather.
"I remember her too. She practically had to beg to go..." Jazira smiled, "And she was in awe of the young man she danced with." There was no way she could ever love another human as she loved him. If he ever died, she would too. "It was the best evening she could recall even if it may have ruined her reputation at the time." A young girl could never really know the consequences of sneaking off with the Lord Holder's son. No matter how intelligent she may be. One thing was for sure, she would be keeping an extra close watch on their eldest daughter at this Gather.
She would never deny her husband anything, except perhaps another woman. She'd probably kill any woman who she caught seducing her husband... The women at the Hold would know her temper and thus would never get caught looking at Haydrin in any way other than as their Lord Holder. "I'd love to." Jazira was no expert on runners but she would spend any time she could with her husband even going down to the stable yard. She was going outside that morning anyway.

He smiled to his wife, there was no one person he was more devoted to. He'd believe anything she told him. He was once told by his brother he was a fool to be played by a female like a harp, but he did not care. He belonged to Jazira as much as she belonged to him. Their connection was deep and he would have no other than her. There were plenty of women who sought power to sleep with him, but he was not tempted. Jazira was beautiful and powerful, and he loved her. She played along with his sotry and nodded, remembering well. "Well I would have no other than you, bad reputation or not."
She accepted his proposal to go to the stables with him, and that made him happy, "Wonderful, why don't we go to breakfast before we are late?"

TheLady knew she was in no way ready for a walk down to the stables. After breakfast she would need to change. She couldn't believe she slept in a day gown. "You better not...I'll kill her." She said as a jealous woman may.
"Breakfast, yes. I'd say we are already late but as Lord and Lady I doubt they can tell us we are late when they could be early." Jazira took his arm, formalities must be upheld... thats what her mother always said.
