In the beginning the Healers were unaware of what was coming. They dismissed the incoming reports of scattered illness and a few deaths as just common infections. Only a sevenday later, this illness had grown to epidemic standards.
The Master Healer of Pern had but one choice. He used a Drum message to tell all of Pern that their lives were in serious danger.
The message went as follows: Epidemic, No one is to convene in any way, Isolate yourselves as much as possible. DO NOT travel. The illness spreads quickly and is deadly. 50% survival rate. We will send word when we know more.
Master Gidian having advised the Master Healer on what the contents of the message should be, had seen that the message be sent correctly. When it was done, he was given his orders. He needed to collect as much data about this illness as he could and document it. This would mean putting his own life in grave danger. Something he was willing to compromise for the survival of the rest of Pern.
