Elisha stood in front of the Candidate classroom as it was empty It would be the first time in a long time that there were no girls among them. But she told herself it had to be done. It wasn't that they were incompetent, that they weren't good enough, that they were weak in anyother way than breeding. She knew people were mad at her, but with the plague, she needed her women to be having more children. Especially if the holds were putting restrictions on the Search. Unfortunately riding wasn't the right career for families. It wasn't possible to get the population up with thread coming and women on greens having even less time for pregnancy. Holes in the wings could prove fatal. And no rider wanted that, no matter how feminist. Elisha herself was a woman, maybe people forgot that some times. She had a notice to pin up and for the word to spead with as little congregating as possible. She and V'nes had agreed to cancel the egg touching. Attention Candidates:
The Weyrleaders and the Candidate Master have concluded that because of contamination issues, the Egg Touching this clutch will be canceled. There is no reason to believe that not touching the eggs will deter hatchings from Impressing and going between. We are sorry for any inconvience, however you have a Hatching to look foreward to very soon.
Thank you.

Phwyn was slightly disenheartened that there would be no egg touching. When the news had come to his ears he had to go see the posting himself. He hadn't impressed with an egg touching what was he going to do now? He was doomed to be dragonless forever!
Okay, maybe it wasn't quite that awful. This meant no one would have any sort of advantage. They would all have to wait till the Hatching to be suprised by the eggs and their contents. Luckily he wouldn't be competing with girls this time with no Queen on the sands and with Elisha being more traditionalist. It worked for him.
He wondered who else had escaped the illness unscathed. He couldn't wait to see his friends but as he saw very few Candidates milling about, he realized many of them may have died and probably did. At least he knew P'len was still around. A brother was forever though friends could come and go.
