"Neory, you know as a Goldrider we have to train in basic health care. Thus when thread falls we can bandage the wounded, heal ailments and all such things." Marisol fully intended to get that girl to impress Gold. She might even have Elisha take her under her wing. She was sure the two women would get along well.
Marisol leaned over her great grandson. "Now we need a blanket." She finished giving him his water. "Just water is fine for me. Its better when one is fighting a sickness. At least thats what the Healers say."

Neory stopped with her hand on the glass and turned to blink at Marisol. She knew full well that the woman had just said we, and it didn't seem to be a generic we. She would just look at her for a moment and then smiled.
"Makes sense, don't need to add a lot of extra things to your body when your sick." She poured the glass of water and brought it over to her. "Where do you keep your blankets? I'll get it."
She had not been a sickly child, but every child gets sick on occassion, and she remembered that when she was sick she appreciated her mother holding her and stroking her hair and little touches like that, she figured Rieko would like his beloved Mari to keep pampering him.
As she waited to be told she would smile to her, "And thank you, Mari. I... I guess its silly to not be honest and admit it, I hope your right. But that's not my choice. Its kind of up to the little hatchling."

Marisol smiled to herself. Wondering how the boy could possibly sleep through all of this. Well it wasn't really a suprise. He needed his rest to heal. "Blankets are in that chest at the end of the bed."
The chest was old, well carved wood. The carvings were of dragons. It was one of her finest pieces of furniture. The dark wood had a deep red tint to it. Marisol had recieved it as a gift when she became Senior Weyrwoman... from a man she was neglecting to notice at the time, Q'tre. It was funny how she had maintained a friendship with him for so long without letting him be intimate with her.
"If there happens to be a Gold Egg in this clutch. I shall inform Elisha of your desire to see it." MArisol stately simply. Beynath didn't mind any conversation concerning other Golds. She was jealous of none. To be jealous would mean to admit that someone had somethign you didn't. The Queen would never admit that anyone had something she wanted.

Neory chuckled softly as she retreived a blanket. "Thank you, Marisol." She was not quite sure the woman was comfortable with her calling her Mari and she wanted to be respectful of her. Even if she was, in this short time coming to consider the older woman a friend.
She admired the fine chest as she opened it and took out the top blanket. She brought it over and would drape it over the little boy. "That's a beautiful chest. Is there a story behind it?"

"My dear, there is a story behind everything." Marisol got up and moved another lavishly comfortable chair over next to Reiko. Then she sat down to tell the story. Her voice grew clear as she spoke, now and then stopping to cough or sneeze.
"The chest is very old. Probably hundreds of Turns. As you may know the life of a woman is very complicated, more so is a woman's love life. I in my long life have had many many lovers. Few of them have felt the return of mine. On the night that Beynath and I became Senior this chest was given to me. Not by my Weyrmate. It was a gift from another Bronzerider. One who had recently transferred here. You know him as the current Weyrleader."
A small smile came to her face. " He was a fast fast friend of mine then. Even though I did not see him romantically for quite some time, he always was there. When he finally had me, he did not have the title of Weyrleader. I was still weyrmated in name and Beynath was caught many more times by a different dragon. Still, one night we were talking, as lovers do, and he told me all about the chest."
The look in Marisol's eyes was not the least bit innocent. "Its a family heirloom of his. You see, his great great grandmother's family were Traders. The wood was carved not all at one time but over turns. The Chest was given to Q'tre by his father when he became a dragonrider. It makes me wonder how many interesting lives have touched that chest. " The fact that he would give her something so special, knowing she was not his must have been hard, at least she thought so. He always responded, that he would give it to no other than she and he had met other Goldriders.

Neory listened to the story attentatively. She grinned a bit at the mentioning that a woman's love life is complicated. Neory had not really experienced that, but she'd only had a few liasions, all of which were based on mutual friendship rather than anything that could truly be described as a "love life."
She smiled as she listened to the tale about Q'tre and watched the weyrwoman's expressions. "You should tell that tale to a Harper. Its really beautiful, and that kind of story should be preserved - though hopefully not as a trite song." Some of the epic love songs were... just... sickening. Others were inspiring.
"Would you have found yourself content if Weyrleader Q'tre had never... persued and caught you?"

Neory was a sweet girl to listen to her stories. R'net and Reiko loved them too. Mostly Reiko now. "The Harpers have more important stories to sing about." It was an interesting thought though. "I was content before I knew Q'tre existed. When I was a very young woman of sixteen..." She looked at the girl.
"It's another tale." Her whole life was like a fairytale to her. She had come from such modest surroundings. "I fell in love with a handsome, womanizer, who of course rode a Bronze. L'tor was injured but his dragon more so during the Weyr games. They Betweened shortly after. We had been Weyrmates for Beynath's first two flight and over a turn before that. His loss, well, I thought I'd never love again. In fact I meant not to."
She had a strange look on her face, almost sad, almost bitter and yet she seemed happy. "Things happen, good and bad. What you do when those times come, makes you who you are. Beynath saw in me the strength to withstand time, tragedy and even joy."

She frowned some at the mention of loss. She could not imagine loving anyone so much that their loss would strike so hard. "I can't even imagine that, Mari. Maybe its the disadvantage of being weyrbred. After all, everything has disadvantages."
She did enjoy the story though, and the hint that it may be possible. "I can't imagine loving anyone deep enough to be that hurt when they died. I mean, family of course. But, not a lover. I'm not even sure I could imagine ever having a weyrmate."
She chuckled a bit, "I'm sorry, that probably sounds horrible, doesn't it?"

"Not at all dear. L'tor was like that. Very much like that when I met him the first time. Orenth wanted to search me but I was only ten." Marisol grinned. "When I did come to the Weyr finally at 16... it was like he had never seen anyone quite like me before. He didn't stop seeing other women right away but it became very clear after I impressed Beynath that he was less and less interested in those sorts of liasons. The point there being that not all people were made to love like that."
She reached down to switch out the cloth on Reiko's head. "True love, is a bit hard to understand when you have never felt it. Theres just something..." Marisol said leaving off without really explaining, yet it expained and was enough.
"It won't be a choice, if thats what you are thinking. Being affected by a person till you can't go two minutes without thinkign of them is hardly the way anyone wants to spend the day."

She chuckled a bit, "I'm not sure if that is something desireable or not." Though she would grin at her. And it was not that she was not concerned about the child, but rather that she thought keeping Mari's spirits up would also affect him positively.
"Though I suppose if he felt the same way, it might be worth it." The few couples she knew who were committed did seem happy.
"Is his fever beginning to break?" She still did not butt in on her tending to the boy.

"It was and is worth it." She added so that no one could deny that she was correct. "Well someday hopefully you will feel it. Its near to draconic love in many ways." Not that any man could come between her and Beynath.
She ran a hand through the boy's red hair. Hers had always been a vibrant color. She hoped his didn't become brown. Red hair was rare and she was all too pleased to have passed on the trait. "The fever won't break for some time. It is hard for us to be patient but I'm sure he will become restless when the fever lowers."
Beynath meanwhile had lifted her head off of her couch and was looking in on her rider and their guests. About time you woke up...You should be resting too, The Gold's comment was a fact but Marisol couldn't sleep when Reiko was ill. She wouldn't be able to even if she tried.

She smiled a bit at her description of love. "I think for now, I will content myself with dreams of that draconic love. Though I won't be averse to love of a man, if one comes along."
She had not been trained much in first aid or healing techniques, but she had picked some things up. "I thought I heard somewhere that alcohol can cool a fever faster than water." She realized how that sounded, "I mean, used against his skin not that he should drink any wine! I don't know if that's true though." If it was, she'd figured Mari would know.
Neory had obviously not heard the Queen Dragon, but she had noticed that she had looked in. She smiled to the Queen and then turned back to Mari, "Why don't you rest some? I can watch over Reiko for a bit. After all, you're not fully well yourself, and I promise, if his fever starts to break or he comes to, I'll wake you. I know you're the one he'd rather see."

Marisol just listened to the girl's reply. Many in the Weyr felt similair to the young woman. Marisol was not Weyrbred and as such had not, before coming to the Weyr realized that a woman could or should have more than one male companion. She of course had no trouble adjusting to Weyr life when the time came. The Weyr had been her top priority for a majority of her life.
That being thought, she couldn't sleep. "As much as I might like to sleep, I doubt I could. It isn't just Reiko. I care more for the Weyr than I ever could for a single human being. There are more important things. This could seriously damage the inner workings of the Weyr and as such it is very much on my consience. Even if I did not start this illness, I was all too likely the person that gave it to my great grandson and thusly the entire Creche. Now tell me how I can sleep knowing how many mothers are up tonight with handfulls of ill children."

"Because you passing out from weariness will do no one any good. No one can stay awake forever, and Reiko will need you more when he starts coming to then he does in the fevered state right now."
She would smile warmly to the older woman, concern in her eyes, "You didn't know you were sick. If you did you would have never gone to Creche. You cannot blame yourself for something that is out of your control." She understood, the guilt. She really did. However, she did not think it was healthy or that there was any real reason for her to feel guilty.
"Mari." She hoped she didn't mind her calling her that. "You're sick. Your body needs rest. You can push yourself until you collapse, or you could get some sleep. I'm sure the Healers could give you something that would help you get some sleep. Once you are feeling better, then there will be plenty of work for you to do."
She was genuinely concerned for her.

"You may be right but I won't be falling asleep even if I were to lay down. I'll just stay where I am and if I should fall asleep that will be alright." Marisol never said she was easy to work with or deal with. She had been stubborn from the womb. At least her mother claimed it. No one could ever tell Marisol what to do. She would rebel or worse do things at her own liesure, her own way.
Some might think she was a bit strange back home but MArisol believed firmly that she had been destined for this position. Beynath was hers because it was meant to be so. No one else was like her in the known world. She liked keeping it that way. Not that she would admit it outloud. If everyone was like her, nothing would get done.
Reiko was still sleeping but the elder woman could not help but think he was feeling alright. He would be fine. Of course he would. The illness couldn't kill either of them. She thought in defiance. Flame anything or anyone that dared to kill her or her family. It made her feel better anyway. Though the best thing at this point would be for Q'tre to walk in. He'd put her nerves to rest.
