The lake was full of people today. Not that Rory cared. He had never been nervous or even the least bit tense in front of a crowd of people. He looked out from where he sat at the water, so peaceful. Originally he was going to the Weyrhall but with wine so readily available he knew he could not go there and continue to be sober.
His neice had died this morning. Rory, in his infinite wisdom had not cried, being strong for the other children and his sister. He could not cry now. It was not the right time or place. Even if he could talk to someone about it, a stranger wouldn't understand his bond with Rorie. Allior was too upset to talk about it. The children were all quiet and finally Rory decided he couldn't stay there and not let out how horrible he felt.
When he had decided to go to the Lake he had hoped it would be devoid of people and dragons. Today just wasn't his day. How did one deal with loss like this? He felt that he had finally really let someone down. He was her knight in shining armor and he had let her die.

Neory had recovered from the mild case of the illness she had contracted. With Marisol and Reiko being better, she had taken some time to herself, knowing that the Retired Weyrwoman would probably want some time without the Drudge/Candidate's presence. While Neory was not unaware of the loss of other children, she was relieved that both Marisol and Reiko had both recovered well.
She had decided that a nice swim would be the best way to relax. Later, she'd go see if there were any more sick who needed help, she figured since she'd gotten sick and recovered, she'd be a good volunteer to help with any other children whose parents might need help. For now, however, she wanted to relax. She wore an old pair of pants that she cut off and a shirt that was tight, perfect for swimming without doing that bubbling thing.
Neory was surprised when she saw just how crowded the lake was. Well, that would make swimming a little more difficult, but it was not completely impossible. She wondered around for a moment, looking for a place to put her stuff down before emerging in the water. Instead, she found someone who looked like the world had just ended.
"Hi. You're Rory, aren't you? I remember you fixed a chair for me not too long ago. I'm Neory." She looked at him and frowned slightly, "Um, sorry if this is prying too much, but um... did you just lose a little one?" Having helped care for Reiko and helped Marisol, she was well aware of the severity of the disease and the number of loss, she couldn't imagine, right now, anything else upsetting anyone as much as Rory seemed upset.

He looked up slowly at the approaching figure. Rory recognized her but couldn't put a name with the face. "Oh, hello. Yep, thats me. " He didn't answer her for several moments not because he didn't want to but because he wanted his words to come out right. Thinking before speaking was something he rarely did and was perhaps why he got into the messes he did.
"my niece. Rorie." The name sounded just like his own, so he knew that there would be more questions to come. In fact he figured he had better get used to telling stories about her. "I've always helped my sister take care of her children. I had four nieces, now I have three. Allie is fourteen, Alene is ten, Aine is seven and Rorie was two. My sister named her after me because I may have saved her life." Now he had failed her. Thoughts that he wouldn't dare say out loud. That would only cause people to say the usual things. It wasn't his fault, he shouldn't blame himself... who else was there to blame?
In his unease he ran a hand through his hair. He needed it cut again it seemed to him. He looked back at Neory. "I don't have any of my own. My nieces are all too likely the closest thing I will have to a child of my own."

She nodded, her eyes showing sympathy. She could not imagine what it was like to lose a child - whether technically yours or not. But she did know that it had to have been rather painful.
"Tell me about little Rorie. I'm sure she was a very special child. I didn't know her, but maybe I can help you keep her memory alive if you tell me about her. And I think it would be better for you to remember her as she was before she became sick." She smiled to him a bit.
Then she looked around, trying to find a relatively peaceful spot where they could sit and talk. Finding such a spot, though relative was very much the key there, she would gesture towards it, "Why don't we go sit and you can tell me all about little Rorie."

Rorry shook his head. He didn't think he could takl about her right now. HE really wished, not for the first time either, that he had a dragon. Just so that he might fly away from all that troubled him. HE would talk about Rorie with Allior and the kids later. For now he just wanted to forget it all.
"I don't think I can talk about it right now..." The drudge replied. He wanted to avoid the whole topic really. It made him want to drink...something he was resolved not to do. He was trying to prove to himself that he couldn't solve his problems by drinking them away. Yet he wasn't ready to face them dead on either.

Neory nodded, "Fair enough. I don't want to make you do anything you're uncomfortable with. And I can't even imagine how much you must be hurting. I'm very sorry for your loss."
The drudge/candidate looked towards the lake for a moment, trying to think. After a moment she turned back to him, "I don't know what to do. So, I'll just ask. Is there anything that you need or want? Anything that can help you deal with the pain? Anything I can do?"
