"Torent had a problem with gambling." Enald replied after a small wait. He didn't like talking about this. It bothered him to admit his problems, even if it was a family problem.
"It wouldn't be wise to allow him to come along. Besides, running the Hold for a few days will give him a sense of responsibility. And it's not like he'll have any say in who his wife is anyway." Wives were picked for sons(and brothers, in this case), and while an heir might be able to force a change, the rest had to make due with what was offered to them. Whatever girl they got for him would be from a family known for their fertility, and intelligence, and if Torent was lucky, maybe she'd be pretty as well. But either way, the man would be rewarded with a hold of some sort after marriage. There was a very small one with a son who didn't want to inherit on the border of Telgar and Crom- perhaps he could send Torent there.
"We'll need to double check on the Runners this after noon, but I think we're set to send the entry fee on everyone."

Leshya nodded. "I'll hold off until you've made your selections then, there's no need to send two replies that close together."
She moved from the seat she was in over to her husband and, if he would let her, would sit in his lap. Now that things were better between them, she really wanted to feel his arms around her.
"I know he doesn't, but I was hoping you'd allow me to help with that. And it would be nice if she is someone who can... calm your brother down some. And maybe someone he can love."
She smiled warmly to him. "I'm sorry I was so cold last night." She actually apologized, but only for that part of it. She did feel bad for making him leave.

"Dear, you draw up the list, and I'll host a ball for the best of them. That way he can meet them, and if he falls in love with one, I'll approve it." Or, Enald thought pessimistically, if Torent ruins the reputation of one, then his brother could marry that one.
He held her carefully in his lap, happy that they were no longer fighting over a silly disagreement. Though he really didn't want her to get up, they had things that each of them needed to do.
"I need to get back to work, dearest." And after he gave her a kiss on the cheek, he removed her from his lap, and went back to work with a single minded ferocity. He wanted this over- then Enald could go spend actual time with his wife- that was, if the work ever ended.
End!
