It is a time in Pern when every weyr is found to be strong and healthy, when golds are fertile and clutch with golden eggs, when the wings are full and many, when thread can not breach the formations. There is no cloud to darken the bright amarillo sky of Pern, no way in which to block out the light of Rukbat. Even with the strange discoveries from Southern penetrating into the lives of holderfolk and weyrfolk alike, life is pleasant and fulfilling.
But Pern herself is not pleased, not with the odd rumblings beneath her crust slowly permeating through the earth to the surface. First the awakening and eruption of the great mountain disrupts the continuation of the discovery of the strange machine and the many deaths of the miners and harpers follow. Then at the Nortern continent the erractic quakes disrupt the hatching grounds of Fort and Igen, leaving clutches lost and cold, the dead eggs needing to be sent between a-dragonback by mourning beasts. Drought sweeps through the continent and a strange plague befalls holds and weyrs alike, Telgar loosing more than half her population. Southern? Are not the eruptions of the nearby mountains not enough to prove that they too are fearful? Though Southern Weyr herself has not been disrupted, crops have been lost and no one dares explore the unknown continent now.
Turns have passed, weyrs once strong and proud are now empty and barren. The few weyrs who have held tight and survived both quake and plague are few: Benden, Ista, and High Reaches. Benden has attempted with its remaining wings to take over Telgar Weyr's territory. Ista has attempted to take over Igen's lost territory. High Reaches Weyr has made the effort to cover the territory of Fort. Though the effort is valiant, for three weyrs to perform the duties once carried out by six is a daunting task. Southern Weyr is the only weyr not affected by plague, the only weyr whose ranks are full and who carries the most healthy and fertile queens. It has been two turns with only light thread, the remaining Northern weyrs are weary and drawn and a new site for a new weyr has been found, all it needs is a weyrwoman and dragonriders to fill in ranks beneath her before the next pass comes. With luck, they and the last weyrs of Pern may once again fly strong and defend Pern as they had for the past nine passes.
Southern Weyr chose from her ranks a single queen rider they would send, be her sacrifice or savior. Let the brave riders who wished to dare the bleak cold lands with her go of their own leave and others from High Reaches, Ista, and Benden to get them started. They would supply a queen and a beginning stock of supplies, but no more, they would not risk loosing their weyr. And so Terathia, a creche-raised weyrbrat whose parents were unknown but determination undaunted, and her bonded the gold Leioth, the youngest Southern queen with high ideals and strong wings, were sent (though some say forced) to the discovered site and asked to give it a name. Beneath a vibrantly colored sky, Rukbat setting in the west where the hatching sands were warm and unaffected by the quakes, she thought of a name, one that would stand on its own and be regarded with respect one day: Varros.
The weyr itself was situated almost directly in between the remaining weyrs, the territory almost completely taking in what was once Telgar's, but also the Northern exposure of Igen's territory. This allowed Benden to take all of the east coast, Ista all of the south coast, and High Reaches all of the west coast of the Northern Continent so that Varros would have only the mainland to concern itself with, only the core of the country with assistance from all sides. It was a well laid out plan, as Terathia discovered and she felt confident that they could stand on their own with such help. She had a grand mountain top worn by glaciers, a lake dug out by the same that was spring fed and led to the creation of a river. What was left of the forests were coniferous stands that could withstand the cold and harsh weather of the Northern climate. Reborn holds would send tithes of grain and beasts and fruits, but for now they must accept the hospitality and generosity of their fellows. For the proud Terathia it is hard to accept how low she had become and she will work hard to build Varros to a high stature, or die trying.
The Weyr crest was determined to be a half-circle on a line with rays radiating out representing a sun on the horizon, either to be rising or setting. The sun is a soft yellow, the top half is orange, and the bottom half a deep maroon.
