Appearance:
Dark brown hair with streaks of gray running through it reach the middle of her back, always tied up in a sensible braid. Hairs to escape during the day, and while in the morning Yashma’s hair is as severe as her punishments, by midmorning she looks noticeable softer, and by midday her face doesn’t look harsh at all.
Born of two failed candidates who were probably searched more for their looks than their innate potential, Yashman is a good looking female. She’s not as tall as she’d like, but at 5’7, she doesn’t need to bring along a tall assistant to pull things off the top shelf for her either. Before she started to age, her hair was thick, and a rich chestnut color(it still is nice, though thinner, and with streaks of gray running through it). Her hands are starting to spot with age, but you can still see the shape of fine hands under the age. Her face is still pretty, with nose that has finally grown big enough for her face, and wide brown eyes that have a spark of good nature in them, even when dressing down an errant drudge.
Her clothing is all nice, and she doesn’t wear worn out clothing unless the duty she is helping out with requires it(such as gathering plants, or making numbweed). She likes colors of all sorts, and patterns. Her son, Yaihin is constantly making her new clothes when an idea occurs to him, and if Yashma doesn’t like it, there are hundreds of workers who’d love new clothes, even if they weren’t designed for them.
Her voice has a permanent rasp to it, due to turns and turns of yelling, as well as a few sicknesses that have struck her.
Personality:
No matter how angry she is, or how much work needs to be done, Yashma makes sure that none of her workers are over(or under) used. She may not know each of her works personally(there are over seven hundred of them, after all), but she knows her assistants, and she knows exactly how much work they can squeeze out of the people below them before complaints start coming in. You work hard at Telgar Weyr, but you are well rewarded for it- good food, cheerful children, treats such as dragonriders, and nicer things than most would have had at a normal Hold.
Yashma is not one to suffer fools, and spends most of her time practically running to keep up with her work load, but if you have some desperate need to speak with her, rest assured that you can, and she’ll take you seriously. Have you thrown out on your ear by a Weyr Guard if you’re wasting her time, but if you have a legitimate concern she’ll listen.
When she first was appointed to Headwoman, Yashma was much sweeter than she is now- a few turns of being sweet made her realize that it made her too approachable, and was making it hard to get all of her work done efficiently.
So, she changed what she was doing. She was harder on people, actually had a few people thrown out of her office by the Weyr Guard, and instated the persona people see now- brisk, efficient, irritable, and slightly, well, crotchety.
With her family, at least the ones that still live in the Weyr, and aren’t Great-nephews or second Cousins, she’s noticeably sweeter, but you can’t be acerbic every day, and not have it rub off a little on your basic personality.
She loves her job, and wouldn’t trust any of the young fools she has as assistants to work half as well as she does, and won’t retire until she either dies, or walk fast enough. And even then, she’s likely to doubt that anyone can take her place, and make the current Queenrider choose her successor(may that day be a long time in coming).
History:
Once upon a time, a Queen clutched. And in her Clutch, there was a Golden daughter. Search riders rode out, and searched female candidates- some people their dragons said they should choose them, and some because the Searchrider found the prospective candidate very attractive.
This had happened before, to a handsome man, who’s last clutch would be the clutch with the Golden egg. And it happened to a woman, who would also have only one change to attract a Dragon before being left to the Lower Caverns.
The Dragon Queen choose Marisol, named itself Beynath, and thus started a new Era of Dragonriders.
Not so for the beautiful candidates. They didn’t Impress, not even to the lowly Green. And thus, they both went out to conduct themselves wildly, trying to throw the distress they felt far away. And thus they met and reproduced.
The child they created was Yashma. She was as beautiful as her parents were, and while she grew up in a time when women could Impress Greens and Blues, none of those dragons wanted anything to do with that particular girlchild. And she never had a chance with a Gold, being merely 12 when Beynath’s first Golden Daughter broke shell, and 23 when Beynath’s second Golden Daughter broke shell.
Giving up on becoming a Dragonrider, having no aptitude for cooking, or sewing, but a lot for getting people to do what she said, the former Headwoman took an interest in the girl who was helping populate the Weyr as best she could, and placed her as a general assistant to the Headwoman, learning all about the different domains the Headwoman ruled. She watched Goldriders conversing with Akiva, watched as Akiva gave away Fosterlings, learned about the subtle balance of power between Headwoman, Weyrleader, Weyrwoman, and all of the Craftmasters in the Weyr.
And the more she learned, the more she loved what she did, soon forgetting about dreaming of being a Queenrider, or a Lady Holder- this, this was the fun part of life.
As a way of showing herself to be competent, Yashma took on a great deal of fosterlings, and helped all of them settle into nice lives, as well as doing the same with her children. And she worked hard, all of the time, trying to make life nice for her family without being accused of nepotism, as well as take care of as many as seven children at a time, Fosterlings and her own, and groom herself as the next Headwoman. She stayed with no men, devoted her time solidly to caring for children who were the result of one night stands, or Fosters, and being the best assistant possible.
As Yashma reached thirty five, Akive was reaching her twilight years, with nearly twenty five years as Headwoman. She wanted to step down, spend time with her grandchildren, and she was fairly sure that Yashma could be counted on to run the Weyr well, so, giving her notice to Marisol, and saying that she trusted Yashma to take over, though if they didn’t get along, she had several other likely girls, Akiva retired gracefully, leaving her final five turns with a great deal of grace as an Auntie.
Yashma, for her part, tried not to feel to intimidated by the reigning Weyrwoman, decided against taking on any new fosters for a good long while, and did her best to run the Lower Caverns.
She made her own share of mistakes, had trouble allowing others to have responsibility, and had a tendency to micromanage, but as the turns went on, she grew to be as good a Headwoman as Akiva before her.
Four turns later, a great deal more confident in her duties, a great surprise was granted upon Yashma. A new child was born to her, and being a mere turn short of forty, Yashma could hardly believe it. The girl was born healthy, and Yashma resisted fostering her final child until Yahvi was six turns old. Now the girl is a potential candidate, and Yashma hopes for the best, even though none in her family has ever Impressed higher than Blue. And she would never, ever be seen encouraging her own to Impress against the wishes of the acting Weyrwoman. Not considering how much she values her position.
Yashma’s views on Elisha are mixed. When Elisha became acting Weyrwoman, Yashma had been Weyrwoman for turns, and she lacks the sort of awe she always felt for Marisol- this allows her to advocate her own position better, which leads to the Weyr being far better run than it had when she’d been unable to speak up. The lack of Female dragonriders also leads to a shortage of males in the Weyr. Of course, it’s not pronounced yet, with only a few turns of male only impressions, but Yashma knows the day is soon in coming where nearly all applications for any job in the Weyr will be females, and the competition for Headwoman, or even her assistant becomes far stiffer than it is now.
However, Elisha is her Weyrwoman, and while they might argue over how much grain is needed, or even how many full time candidates they can support, any arguments of another type will be a long time coming.
After all, a united Weyr, is a strong Weyr. And she won’t have some backwater Weyr like Igen, or High Reaches be better run than her own. And if it means that her youngest daughter will never Stand for a Clutch, then so be it.
Being merely a worker isn’t half bad. After all, Yashma’s life turned out very well.
