Character Info:
Name: Koriam
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Rank: Weyrling
Family:
Killiem, Father, 49 Vinter at Benden Hold.
Oriana, Mother 43 Former weaver, but retired after the aches in her hands became to much to work around. Now, she's a foster mother to children all around Pern.
Liam, Brother 23 - Journeyman Vinter
Appearance: Koriam prefers to keep his dark, black hair shortly cropped, almost buzzed. It keeps it out of his way and most importantly, means he can sleep in that much longer, without having to do all that nonsense of grooming it. All in all, he'd pass as handsome, but he doesn't really care to find out others' opinions. If someone decides to not like him because he looks a certain way, it's their loss. Personally, Koriam doesn't take stock in looks to much, and will be friends with anyone.
His best feature would have to be those grey green eyes that seem to catch you when you least expect them. They don't miss much. Standing at 5'10 and a half (very important, that half), his frame is almost small compared to other Weyr residents. He might have been called scrawny, had he stayed at the Hold, but with his regiment since arriving at the Weyr, Koriam has built up lean muscle. He'll make a fine dragonrider, or so some of the ladies are starting to say.
Personality: There's not much to Koriam. He's always been content to keep to himself, with his counsel and thoughts. He'll be the one you catch across from a crying girl or frazzled older man, trapped, if only because they know he'll always be a sympathetic ear and not turn anyone away. It can be a blessing or a curse, depening on the person in front of him...
And, despite his hard work ethic, Koriam enjoys his down time as much as any other inhabitant in the Weyr. Besides, no one likes doing chores, even if he does them quickly and efficiently - Koriam is a young man and full of life. During his down time, he can be found reading or cooling off in the lake. Swimming has always been a favorite past time of his. If you catch him in a good enough mood, maybe he'll even tell you a joke. He can be an amazing friend, if you can just get past that intimadating silence.
If there was a flaw to the quiet young man, it would be his love for wine. Call it an occupational hazard, seeing that his father and brother are both vinters. Maybe it's because it reminds him of his childhood home, or even the irresistable taste, but place a glass of wine in front of the boy and it'll be gone before you could say "cheers!" It's been the reason behind several of Koriam's most embarassing moments at Feasts in the past, and some people wonder if that's why he doesn't speak so often when sober - that he's making up for his loose tongue when intoxicated. If he doesn't learn to keep it in check, it's bound to cause trouble later on when he becomes an adult and rider.
History: Koriam was born to a craftsman at Benden Hold. He was the younger son, and while his parents were always loving and doting, the young boy found it easier to let his brother claim the spot light. While Liam went out to hunt or fish with others his age, always bringing home trophies of the day to be praised by their mother, Koriam would wander by himself, letting his imagination take control as he explored. Certain days, he'd just sit in a tree all day, listening to the various forest creatures. Another day, he'd build a small fort, where he'd keep small treasures like a pretty rock or an uniquely shaped leaf. Before he would realize, it would be nightfall, and his mother's voice would echo through the Hold, looking for him. His dad would joke that one day he'd be a Harper, and all those dreams bouncing behind his eyes would be told. But, oh, if his father only knew the biggest dream of all...to be one of those famed dragonriders.
And, wouldn't luck have it. His mother, who was raised in Crom Hold until she married Killiem, had an old friend in the area. Unlike his mother, who ventured into a craft, she had been "searched" to stand on the Hatching Sands and try her luck at becoming a dragonrider. Of course, not everything goes to plan, and she ended up deciding to stay in the blue rider's bed instead, eventually becoming a cook in the Lower Caverns, taking care of bouncing babies, not all that searchrider's either. This is how Koriam would get to a Weyr. He and one of Tera's younglings would be fostered by the other. "It'd be such a nice experience for both boys, espeically before Kor goes off to be a Harper..." Oriana wrote in one of their letters.
For once in his life, Koriam's excitement was visible to everyone rather than kept on a tight reign like every other emotion. It was one of the fantasies that preoccupied his walks in the forest, becoming one of the few, proud Dragonriders. He knew it was nonsense to think of such things, when there was work aplenty around the Holds and Crafthalls. The lad knew his parents were determined to send him off to Harper Hall, but still that spark of hope remained. As a fosterling in the Weyr, he was that much closer to becoming a rider, or so he rationalized. So, at twelve, he left the life he had known and traveled to the unknown: Telgar Weyr.
Time passed. Koriam grew older, surrounded by randy dragonriders, surly kitchen folk, and their numerous children. And he loved every minute. The boy would regularly stop by the Candidates barracks to see newcomers or even to help with their chores, if only to feel like one of them. His efforts were not in vain. Turns had passed, and Koriam was almost ready to give up being approached to Stand, but thankfully, several people took notice of his hard work. Seeing his genuine interest, he too was recruited. Koriam's dream was becoming more of a reality everyday. Soon, he would stand at his first Hatching as a Candidate.
Soon, he would be a Rider.
