Appearance:
Vania’s most noticeable feature is her large brown eyes. They stand out fiercely against her small face. She has a small delicate nose surrounded by a covering of freckles that reach to her cheeks. The freckles don’t end until her face curves into small, simple ears. Her lips are tiny, just like the rest of her, besides her eyes of course. She has a wide smile, but she doesn’t like to show her teeth that much. She thinks that their too crooked, even though only one of her front teeth is twisted a little bit.
She has a light skin tone, only marred by the freckles on her face and the ones that trace the way down her arms. She doesn’t tan very well, but she also just burn. Her skin just develops more and more freckles the longer she’s in the sun. Her light blonde hair travels its way down to her lower back. It’s highlighted by the almost white-blonde streaks that the sun bleached into her hair. She either braids it or she lets it hang free, not minding the hindrance of its length.
She’s not very tall for her age, actually falling on the lower edge of normal. Vania’s thin and not very athletic. She can be considered wiry, though it’s apparent that she’ll probably fill out into a softer form. She wears either loose cloth bottoms or simple skirts. Her mother usually dresses her in hunter greens or navy blues that emphasize the lightness of her hair and her large brown eyes.
Personality:
The young girl is a little more complicated than many her age. Her reactions depend a lot on the situation and how comfortable she is. Vania is a confident young girl, but only when she’s not with children her own age. She loves to sit with the adults and listen to their conversations. She gives her own opinions, but only if asked for them. She mostly just listens and observes, learning with a quiet, easy air about her.
Around people her own age, it’s noticeable that she doesn’t know how to act. They run and laugh and play and she joins in, but she doesn’t talk really and she mostly just holds herself separate. It’s not that she doesn’t like the others; she’s just uncomfortable with how she’s supposed to act around them. Adults are simple, they think she’s cute and take her ideas into consideration simply because they came from a young child. She can speak intelligently and not have to worry about getting laughed at.
Vania is a very gentle-natured soul. She wouldn’t do anything to offend or hurt anyone else. That’s why she’s so cautious when it comes to other children. They’re loud and harsh and she doesn’t like acting like that. She loves animals and spends a lot of time in the runner stables or around her family’s dragons. Vania just likes to talk to them even if they don’t talk back. She had a canine, but he died. She was very upset and tends to avoid canines now.
She thinks that everything about the world should be better. That’s another reason that she spends so much time with the adults. She sees the problems around the weyr and she wants to make them better. She’s quite idealistic and stubborn when it comes to her ideas and, even if she presents them in a small, unassuming way to others, it would be very hard to change her mind. She thinks that she can change the world, but she’s only eight turns and she’ll go one of two ways. She become cynical once she realizes that she can’t change everything or she’ll continue on her pursuit to make the world better.
For now, though, Vania just let’s her thoughts be heard with the adults and keeps dreaming about a better world. She tries her best at everything she does, but whenever she has a few minutes to herself, she dreams and wishes and talks it over with the runners.

Niadina and Vahnya were wayward teenagers who thought that they were in love. Their limited ways to be careful weren’t enough and a relationship of just a half a turn produced a pregnancy that was considered scandalous. Niadina was only 17 turns when she began showing, but Vahnya was only 15. She worked hard to support herself, though she did rely heavily on her mother; the Headwoman.
When Vania was born, Niadina and Vahnya began to have problems. First they argued over the name for the babe and then who was going to take care of whom financially. Vahnya wanted to step into the patriarchal position, but his age made Niadina wary. She thought that she loved the man, but then she realized that he wasn’t a man, he was just a boy. He wasn’t ready for a serious relationship much less a child. She regretfully ended their relationship and began life with a child as a single mother.
Vania still grew up with the love of both her parents. Her father still made himself a part of her life even if her mother and he did not get along. She loves her father, but she had always been closer to her mother. Her father did give her Daru, her canine. She loved the puppy and raised him to the best of her ability. He followed her everywhere and she always talked to him like he could understand what she was saying.
When she was seven turns, the canine passed away from eating a piece of bad meat. It created an aversion to canines that disappointed Vania’s mother. Her father tried to get her another canine, but she told him to take it back. It was heartbreaking to listen to the little girl refuse a puppy from her father, but she was stubborn and she still thought that her Daru was going to come back and get jealous that she had replaced him.
In her many turns of hanging around the adults, she grew to enjoy some of their activities as well. She began to learn to weave and stitch from her mother and then she began to learn from some of the Lower Caverns women who took care of the mending and stitching for the riders. She grew to love the work and she had a talent for it, even though she was still very young for such an activity.
The first fever swept through, taking Vania with her. She was a strong young girl so she survived it much more easily than most. It worried her mother, but it all turned out very well until the next wave came through. Her mother and father both caught the fever and both managed to survive. During the sickness, Vania began to spend more and more time with her grandmother and her brother. Usually her brother bothered her, but she tried to help him in any way that she could. Through the sickness, though, Vania actually began to become more of his friend instead of just his big sister.
Niadina survived the fever, but at a price. Her brain was affected and she was reduced to the mentality of a child, no longer capable of caring for her daughter or son. Her grandmother tried to care for her as long as she could, but eventually caring for her daughter usurped most of her free time, leaving her little time to deal with her grandchildren. She eventually had to foster the pair out. Vania misses her family terribly and spends as much time as she can with all of them.
