Today, the weather was holding up nicely, however, there was no one outside. The sun was shining with all it's glory, but there was no one out there to enjoy it. Every one was at the main dining hall feasting. Today, worthy senior apprentices were walking the tables, and one of them happened to be Bennik. Of course, he was ready and a bit nervous. When he became a journeyman, he might be sent on to some where else to work. On one hand, he was ready to settle down with a nice girl and work on his master's. On the other hand, of course he wanted to travel and see Pern for himself. Yet, was he ready to work with out the eye of his Master on him?
Finally when they read his name and it was his turn to walk, he realized he must be ready, for they didn't just raise men up willy nilly. He noticed not one female's name raised today, and he thought it was a pity, there were one or two girls talented enough. They would probably become discouraged and quit the craft like all the others.
He stood to be honored with new title and responsibility with his classmates, and noticed the proud beaming of his parents in the crowd. Of course, being a male in this world, he was their only hope to carry on crafting excellence.

Gidian watched the ceremony with great interest. It was important to him who walked the tables. There were few that had made it to journeyman this turn, let alone Master. He wondered if the MasterHealer was thinking what he was thinking. As a realist, Gidian knew he was nothing special in the eyes of the Master Healer but he also knew that no one else was either. He had just as much chance as anyone to reaching that status someday. Today, for all that it was a celebration, Gidian did not get to party as he would choose. He would humor his associates and pay close attention to the newly raised.
He'd much rather be working on this illness dilemma. Gidian sighed and put a long finger to his temple, as he rubbed away the stress. The only thing that might work to his advantage was if there were some pretty young women around. That was something that nearly always brightened his mood. Before he could look for said women, he needed to congratulate the newbies.
"Journeyman Bennik, Congratulations." He held out his hand to shake the young man's. "Any thoughts as to where your first assignment will be?" He could have brought up the boy's parents, especially his mother, a Master herself in the arts of healing. As much as Gidian wanted to let himself like her, he found she empowered women too much and if women felt that empowered, would they still want to spend time with him? He doubted it very much. A few women like her were enough, the rest were better off putting their beautiful minds to other uses. His eyes scanned the boy's face.
Gidian was well dressed as always, certainly handsome as always and of course, arrogant as always. He was born with a charisma about him that drew others into his conversations. At first people were not intimidated by him, however after a conversation with him many were in awe. He let that awe get to him, which only made him more arrogant. Luckily he found a good use for that.

Bennik respected the masters, even though he knew far too well they were biased. He knew that his mother was not well liked, and knew even more, some might resent him only because he was her son. Ben was raised to honor hard work, and to become a contributing member of soceity. He expected others to do the same, but of course he knew better than any one that what people expected of women were changing. He briefly wondered if the other masters were waiting for him to slip or oppose their policies. Bennik was trying hard not to.
It was a great surprize then, that Master Gidian approached him to congratulate him so nicely. Bennik nodded, "Why, th-thank you, Master Gidian." His nervous hand clasped the master healer's as firmly and professionally as he could. One weakness of his was that his hands had a terrible habit of sweating when he was nervous, but he hoped the master wouldn't notice too much. "Well, I wouldn't mind being sent to another hold to work for a while. I would like to travel." He shrugged, "As a young man, even I am curious about the Weyrs. Of course, riding is not my calling, I know healing is, but I think maybe just to see them would be a great experience." What a silly dreamer he sounded, so he added quickly, "Though staying here to study under great masters such as yourself is alluring too. Heh, I guess I'm pretty open minded when it comes to assignments."
What a foolish oaf he must sound. On further review, he realized, he really wouldn't mind being placed all over. Except maybe colder areas like High Reaches or something. Southern Boll would be a real treat. Much too nice for him to ever dream of.
