Appearance:
Gidian is a boyishly handsome man. He has wavy, dark brown hair with lighter graying hairs growing in here and there. The cut is short in the though not the style of a rider. Beneath a pair of well shaped eyebrows are piercing, bright blue eyes. Many have found his gaze unnerving. A quality he uses to his advantage. Though a rather tall man, Gidian doesn’t weigh more that 192lbs and stands roughly about 6’1”. There are taller men in his craft though they are few and far between. The features that most define his face are his high cheek bones and strong chin.
There is a slight gap between his teeth in the upper left hand side of his mouth. This gives his angular face a boyish grin that never grows old. Gidian, has done a lot to ensure he stay strong and fit because he’s a bit of a health nut. He has no flabbiness to him as he is all muscle and sinew. His shoulders are broad and his hips narrow. Gidian’s physique would be considered desireable for one his age.He hopes to keep it that way in the future.
He dresses for whatever occasion he finds himself in. A chameleon of sorts Gidian knows how to look the part. After a few days of working without sleep he can come off as somewhat rugged looking with his facial hair unshaven.. At a meeting he would be cleaner, better dressed though still retain a sense of the ruggedness that he was working. Social occasions leave him wanting to look his very best. He can be clean cut on those days. He enjoys well made clothes but does not spend a lot of time thinking his outfits through. He will wear most colors but not green.
Personality:
Gidian comes off as arrogant to those around him. He is more than self-assured. Gidian likes to keep things to himself and doesn’t share his feelings or thoughts with anyone outside of his closest friends and confidants. He is prejudiced against those of lesser rank, such as drudges and apprentices.
He is calm and collected often even thought of as cool. The Master would prefer to keep his own company than be loud and boisterous like some. He expects rank to be obeyed, especially his. If anyone were to disrespect him, he was only too likely to ruin their insignificant lives. This only proves that he doesn’t take bull nuts from anyone. Gidian likes to have things done his way and no one else’s. Sometimes he may seem more than a little egotistical but that fades when one looks past his Ranker righteousness.
Women are a wonderful gift to him. He loves them or at least he likes to make love to them. He is as chivalrous to women as he can be. There are of course cases where he doesn't like the woman on a personality basis. In that instance he becomes somewhat of an not a very nice person but tries not to be too rude, staying just this side of mean. He knows of all of his children but as he is a busy man doesn’t really keep tabs on all of them. Well at least not the ones that are not from his marriage. That isn’t to say he won’t provide some assistance to the mothers if they need it.
He wants his klah served hot without anything to make it sweeter. He likes his heavy ales and beers and even Dragon’s Breath, though he consumes it in small quantities to save him from very embarrassing mornings. Wine isn’t exactly something he likes to drink though he will have it with a meal if it is fitting to. He likes meat, especially red meat. Vegetables and tubers aren’t bad either but please keep that sweet fruity stuff away from him.
He would call himself a man of steel. He can eat anything and not feel ill to his stomach. Matter of fact he has never been ill, except maybe once with a small head cold as a child. He doesn’t get ill, which he takes to mean he is healthier than other people. Healthier often equating to better.
History:
Gidian was not born at Healer Hall. He was raised at Benden Hold. He was one of numerous children in his family, so as with many large families he helped take care of the younger children before being apprenticed. He was a fairly normal child. He did often times come off as a bit of a spoiled brat. It might have been because he always spoke as if he were entitled to whatever he wanted. Something his mother tried to cure him off. With his older sister’s always spoiling him it was a hard thing to cure him of. His father was a journeyman smith and often came home smelling of sweat and metal. It was apparent that his father did not want the young boy to follow in his path. .
Gidian’s smug almost arrogant attitude often made his father want to hit him though he never did. Something perhaps Gidian should have admired him for but the youth was incapable of seeing good, in his unmotivated father. He bickered with his father almost daily even when his mother did everything she could to stop them. There was no help for it. They were two very different people. His father mainly was jealous of the attention given to Gidian and began to dislike the boy more and more as he grew up
At the age of nine, Gidian became officially apprenticed to the Healer Hall at Fort. He picked things up quickly but he didn’t much care for the whole apprenticeship bit. The being looked down on and told what to do all the time. It was better than the alternative, becoming a drudge. He couldn’t bear the thought of it. He thought himself above such things. There had always been a sort of demanding presence about him.
After Turns of apprenticing and traveling Pern, Gidian walked the tables. He was 22 years old and newly engaged. Things were looking up. His wife, Lark, was fairly attractive and also wasn’t one to notice silly little things. She bore him his first child, four turns later. Married life was fine, but he found himself bored. The freedom of his past life was not just a memory for him. He wanted to live those moments again and he did.
Though he had many affairs, few bore him children. His wife didn’t seem to care what he did, so long as he provided for her and their children. She might not have known he was seeing other women. As a journeyman, he was stationed in different places, Telgar Weyr for a time, even.
Gidian ended up back at Fort, stationed at the actual Hold for a few turns before transferring to the Hall. His children were glad to stay in the same area for once. He was promoted to Master at the age of 49. Not really a surprise considering his closeness to the Master Healer of Pern. There was always politics involved in these sorts of things so he kept those of rank close to him.
At 51, he is an advisor to the Master Healer, often aiding him where he can. They are good friends, though Gidian often has to tend to other jobs, like teaching the young. The illness that recently swept through Pern kept him busy. He enjoyed the hectic environment and the chance to study something new. In fact he sometimes wished life were like that all the time.
Little did he know that a second illness of epidemic death tolls would come to Pern so soon after the first illness had subsided. Though the Healers were stretched thin throughout Pern, Gidian was sent to Telgar Weyr to deal with the ill there. While he couldn't save everyone he did his best to keep the infirmiry up and running. When the death toll was finally told, he knew that Pern had suffered a horrible loss. He will be returning home as soon as everything is set to get along without him at Telgar Weyr.
