Chaila (daughter, 17). Endlessly good natured, and a kind word for everyone, Chaila refuses to see evil in anyone. She’s the kind of girl that hangs onto every word of a Harper spun romance novel. Pretty enough that she’ll soon be a girl out of one of her tales.

Sexual Orientation:

Appearance:
Stunning his the only word that works for Sulia. Perhaps it isn’t natural beauty, but the girl is beautiful. Her hair is long, and appears red-gold in direct sun, and a rich brunette when inside. It’s tousled most of the time, but not curly. Her lips are a light rosebud pink, and her skin is pale, with only the lightest hint of color. Her nose is small, and straight, and her eyebrows are carefully tended. Her eyes are a rich brown, and framed by long lashes.
Her body is average size, her height being around five feet, ten inches, with an ample bosom(a little bigger than a C cup), and looks well fed. Her hands are delicate, and show no signs of having to do much hard labor in the last few years, though calluses from riding, and needlecraft show on her fingers. She uses oil to keep her hands as soft as possible, making the small hands good for dancing, something she also enjoys.
Clothing is never less than the very best. The cost of one of her dresses would outfit both her maids, and all of their assistants for two turns, and she has many different outfits. Though one of her maids is a skilled seamstress, and often remakes dresses to Sulia’s standards, the woman still manages to find a need for another dress or five every Turn, refusing to been seen reusing her dress often. She prefers reds and greens, with rich brown another favorite, especially for riding dresses. Purples she wears less often, though she has a gown or two of purple, and her favorite nightgown is a lilac color.
Personality:
Sulia embraces life to the fullest- in every way possible. She can be patient, she can be modest and demure- she just doesn’t want to be.
Excess is something she enjoys, and the Lady of Fort is one who has excess in everything. Clothes, food, parties, lovers, dancing, relaxing, riding and has a finger in every pie(not quite literally, but close).
Though she’s good about keeping it secret, this Lady has had several lovers since the end of her first turn of marriage. Her husband, who is often emerged in the work of running a Hold, simply doesn’t have enough time for her. Sulia has always had some sort of romance in her life, and refuses to give it up now. She tries to keep things chaste, and has a way of seeing who won’t give her away. The idea of Merreck finding out chills her to the bone, and not just because he would cut back on funding her excessive lifestyle.
She’s known that she was barren since a little after a month of marriage- and while she’d always suspected it, it was something else to have it confirmed by the Healer she contacted. It’s led her to be less worried about bearing Merreck a child not of his blood, and it allows her the freedom of lovers. As her husband has both heir and spare, she sees no problem with her lack of children. If by some freak of nature both sons are killed, she could be persuaded to step down without to much effort. That is, if she was adequately compensated.
Sulia’s feelings on Merreck are always complicated and convoluted. She loves him, and respects him(and is even attracted to him), but at the same time, she doesn’t know what to do with him. She enjoys the fun part of being Lady Holder, but avoids all duties. She doesn’t understand why he chose her, and feels like he’s too easily fooled. Though Merreck isn’t stupid, his lack of knowledge of what his Lady does dulls her respect for the man.
Though not fiercely traditional, Sulia has always been impressed with Dragons, and their Riders. While she has never taken a Dragonriding lover, if the option ever became available, she’s leap on it with joy. Dragonrider embody everything she has ever wanted- freedom, the ability to do what you want, sexual freedom, and a danger that she will never experience.
Had Sulia been raised with good values, and challenges, and respect, she might have turned into a respectable, honest woman. She wasn’t, but perhaps the potential is there somewhere- buried alive, but not dead yet- just choked off.
Hobbies/Skills:
Better than a passable rider, and very good at clever conversation. Has a talent for finding colors and cloth that looks good on any given person.
Has a knack for remembering names, ranks, and gossip. This talent is one of her more useful ones.
Pets:
None- Unless, of course, Ralyn’s female children count
History:
Born the youngest of seven children, and female at that, nothing important was foreseen in Sulia’s future. The family was not rich, and most of the money it made was made in fish. Strong bodies were needed more than pretty girls, and Sulia was not what the family wanted, nor what it expected.
The girl dreamed through her childhood of Marriage, and how it would take her away from the endless cycle of gutting fish, and drudge work. That, however, was not in her stars. The family had decided that the last two children(both girls), whose dowries they couldn’t afford would be kept as aunties, and used as cheap, trustworthy, labor. Both Sulia and Ressi bowed to the families wishes, but both girls spend childhood thinking of a way to make a dowry(or meet a man who wouldn’t need one from his Bride), and escape a life of endless drudgery.
Life went on, and Sulia grew to be a beautiful- but delicate young woman. She was sick often, and cuts, scraps, abrasions, and blisters took twice, or even three times as long to heal on her than with anyone else in their hold. Seen as a useless, waste of time and resources, she was looked down upon by all of her family, even Ressi, who, up until that point, she’d been close with.
Desperate for a way to get out of where she was, Sulia jumped on visiting relative for a solution. The woman, who was commonly considered an Aunt to the family, had been complaining all evening of her maids, and how none of them could keep their mouths shut. After yet another embarrassment, she’d retired to country for a while, and that was why she’d come to Sulia’s family’s Hold.
Managing to integrate herself well with the woman, whose name was Yonne, Sulia convinced the woman that she, with her future so bleak, was the perfect person to become her newest maid. Her family, releasing that the girl would be more useful elsewhere, allowed this to happen. Sulia has always felt it was actually because Ressi had taken up with a man several years younger than her, a man who wasn’t asking for a dowry- the family was too confused and lost to put up much of a fuss over Sulia.
Taken to a Large Court for the first time in her life, Sulia quickly adjusted. The intrigues, the betrayals, the political ramifications appealed to the intelligence that had been suppressed most of her life. Quick, and with no morals that were offended by Yonne’s actions(the woman had more lovers at any given time than she did children, and she’d had a large brood during her fertile turns.
The maid was soon known for her way of keeping her Lady from being caught in a scandal, and for her sweet ways. Afraid to offend her Lady, Sulia was the perfect Ladies maid.
Yonne and Sulia traversed several Holds, as Yonne had relatives everywhere, and hated spending time with her aging husband, who was more than happy to stay at home, looking after the grandkids. Sulia grew more accustomed to Court life, and her tastes in everything expanded. She hated spending time in Fish dependent courts, so Yonne and her were mostly known on the inner Holds, and Sulia grew to be able to handle a horse quite well. Having been nineteen when she’d started working with Yonne, three turns had been spend together, and on the very rare occasions that she went home, the change was very apparent. Moving into their fourth turn, Yonne, who was getting older(early fifties), decided to go back to her husband’s Hold. He was the retired Lord of a Minor Hold in Fort Hold, and now that Yonne was safely ensconced in Fort, she couldn’t act the way she used too. Not wanting to retired from the fun part of Court life, she groomed Sulia as a true member of court- not just a Lady’s Maid.
Merreck, the Lord Holder of Fort, had lost his wife to childbirth a while ago, and everyone knew that he was looking for a woman to become the newest Lady Holder. Every beauty from every hold that could afford it was present in the Fort Court, and it was a good time to be there. Sulia, despite being older, and slightly less attractive than many of the renowned beauties from all over Pern caught Merreck’s eyes, and so began a short courtship. Sulia grew fond of him, and while she doubted that he would pick her(she had no dowry, had reached her twenty-fourth birthday, and had no true important political connections), she enjoyed his company.
It came as a complete shock when Merreck proposed that they marry, and Sulia couldn’t say no. Almost before she knew what was happening, Yonne was acting as her representative, and a marriage contract was drawn up- and due to Yonne’s influence, none of Sulia’s immediate family was there to demand things they shouldn’t, nor spoil the classy way Sulia acted.
Married mere weeks after her twenty-fourth birthday, Sulia became lost in the duties of a Lady Holder. The Headwoman, who’d grown used to taking care of most of the responsibilities was glad when Sulia didn’t take up the reigns as true ruler of the Hold, and Alsea continued acting like she was the true Lady Holder. Sulia’s responsibility became the Court- keeping them distracted, happy, and entertained. Officially, she was Lady Holder, but in actuality, that was far from the truth.
She became a better rider, and started having the court ride out with her most days. She began listening to petty Holder’s complaints, enjoying the only feeling of power she was given, and started spoiling herself. Merreck, who’d been so attentive during their courtship, couldn’t continue to neglect his work, and seeing his wife so occupied, allowed the romance to creep out of the daily relationship, and so Sulia began pampering herself. At first it would be something simple as an extra glass of wine, or a new hat, but soon it turned into a new dress, or jewels that she couldn’t resist. She spend a good deal of marks, though not quite enough for the Headwoman to complain to Merreck.
A turn into her marriage, a young artist(a painter), caught her interest, and became the first of several lovers. Having already discovered that she was definitely barren, Sulia didn’t see a problem with having a lover on the side. Lovers, carefully concealed from even her maids(something much harder than it should be), were an integral part of her life, and while she doesn’t love them, her fits of passion over one lover or the next is part of the reason for living.
Having always been unhealthily skinny, Sulia with her riding, and indulgence in eating, has started to gain the shape of a true woman- fit, with a face that isn’t too angular.
Though she looks better than she ever has, the woman isn’t feeling the best she ever has. Yonne recently died, and she has no true friends- and she’s not silly enough to trust her lovers with anything but her feelings. Though she’s become closer to Melora than ever, a fourteen turn old is no true friend.
Sulia has recently started searching for a proper wife for her oldest stepson(and perhaps her younger stepson as well). She’s also doing all she can to get Alsea married off. There is also a faint hope that she could find a lady’s maid as trustworthy as she was.
Lovers have paled, though her husband has not, and duties she would rather not be part of have been added to her schedule. Sulia recently returned from Nerat, and has realized she really does despite her family. Though she’s changing, Sulia’s confusion has grown greater. Hardly older than her step-children, it seems she was not as grown as she could have been before assuming her duties(though other Hold Ladies took their positions just as young, if not younger).
Life will probably be chaotic in the next few turns for her family.
