Character
Name: Deavon
Rank: Master Dragon Healer
Gender: Male
Age: 52
Origin: Benden Hold
Family:
Father: D'vry, a Brownrider at Benden Weyr. Deceased.
Mother: Alon, Retired Headwoman at Benden Weyr, (75).
Brother: A'lor, Blue Rider at Benden Weyr, (54).
Sister: Aelry, Green Rider at Fort Weyr, (49).
Brother: Lonry, Drudge, Dimglow, at Benden Weyr, (45).
Sexual Preference: Men, preferrably strong and masculine.
Appearance:
Deavon was not the tallest of men, but he was not particularly short either. He stood just under 6 feet tall, and age had not yet bent him over, though he had begun to feel the slightest bit of discomfort in his joints in the winter. Deavon was a rather lean man, not as toned or strong as the Dragon Riders, but rather fit for a man his age.
His skin was no longer the flawless smooth skin of youth, but his wrinkles somehow defined his face and gave him a distinguished appearance. His once rich chocolate hair, was now peppered with gray, and he had grown a beard and mustache which he kept neat.
Deavon tended to dress in earthtones, wearing comfortable tunics with a leather apron when he was at work. When not working on a patient, he could be seen wearing comfortble shirts and not too snug pants, though in the winter, he tended to layer warm sweaters over his normal clothing.
Personality:
For some people, reaching Master's status made them either boring or stern and serious. While Deavon took his responsibilities seriously, he had not forgotten how to have fun or enjoy life. However, being a more senior individual has made him calm down significantly and to begin to miss some of the things that he gave up to reach Master's status/ However, he does not regret the choices he made or wish he had chosen differently.
In his youth, Deavon was rather hedonistic. And to some degree, he still enjoyed pleasure and rarely denied himself an opportunity for fun - of any kind. However, he no longer sought out pleasure or fun with the same headlongedness that he once did.
There was a side of the healer that very few people ever got to see. Though he'd never admit it, Deavon longed to settle down into a lasting relationship, to belong. He'd love to foster a little one or two, though he knew it was rare for a single man to be allowed such. It just meant he would help out in the creche when he could. In fact, despite being able to talk to any dragon who would let him, or the constant buzz of dragons that he always heard, and despite the number of bed partners that the man had had, Deavon was lonely.
History:
Daevon was the second child born to a weyrmated couple at Benden Weyr. His father was a wingsecond, and his mother eventually became the Headwoman of the weyr. While his parents remained interested in him and his siblings, they were fostered off in the Weyr. However, because the foster mothers answered to the Headwoman, his mother remained a huge part of his life, and they were guaranteed to have the best foster mothers in the weyr.
As a child, Daevon was very much a follower. He tended to trail his older brother around, and did everyhing that his brother told him to do. Most of the time, that was a safe enough decision, as Aylon was very protective of his little brother. However, they were still boys, and boys were likely to get into trouble. When Aylon told Davon to climb up to get something off the top shelf, he had thought this young brother's sprite-ness would make it easy. He had not counted on his brother getting paralyzed with fear and staying up there until their foster mother came home. His brother got a spanking, while Daevon cried as if he was being punished. Afterwards, the two were even closer.
When Daevon turned 12 turns old, he started hearing things that no one else could hear. He was not able to get any sleep as the sounds, at first vague and indistinguishable, did not ever really let up. After a couple of months, the sounds started to differentiate themselves into words, and he tried to keep it to himself, as he was afraid how the Riders would feel about someone "eavesdropping" on their conversations with their dragons, even if he wasn't doing it on purpose and couldn't help it.
Daevon worked hard to try to not hear the voices, but he was not able to succeed. Nor was he able to hide the problem indefinitely. His father discovered the truth when he accidentally answered a question that his father's dragon had asked. While upset at first, his mother quickly calmed him down and after much discussion, it was agreed to send the young boy to Healer's Hall at Fort, believing that they might could help him - or at least train him in an important craft.
The Master that Daevon was sent to found an older hide mentioning a similar "disability." Fortunately, the hide was a detailed journal of the woman's journey. He found another journal, detailing the thoughts and work of her master. While the hides were old and in places unreadable, it gave Master Alermos ideas and a starting point. He also insisted that they both keep journals as these were old and someone else might need similar journals in the future.
While Master Alermos made arrangements with the leaders of the Fort Weyr for Daevon to be able to come down to the Weyr with him, the rest of the Riders at Fort were not made aware of the young man's "condition." It was felt that they would not allow him to be there, if they knew. However, Daevon did eventually learn how to "ignore" the talking, treating it like constant background buzzing - though he has never learned to not hear it completely.
Alermos eventually passed his young apprentice onto another Master, because through their trips to the weyr, it had become evident that Daevon could and should be a DragonHealer. While he had learned to make the voices more of a background buzz, whenever one complained of pain or discomfort, the young man was not able to ignore the voice, and would convince his Master that they needed to see to the dragon, often before the dragon had been taken to the DragonHealer by his or her Rider.
His new Master, Delech, was a hard but fair task master. And Daevon's first lover. While they two often shared a bed at night, Daevon could soon be found in the bed of several of the Riders, though even still, the knowledge of his uniqueness was not well known, and Daevon learned how to reach out to hurting dragons without their riders suspecting that he had any special insight into their dragons' minds. It was not long until Daevon became a Journeyman and was sent to High Reaches Weyr.
At High Reaches Weyr, Daevon became very popular, and not just among men who wanted to bed him. He worked well with the Dragons there and under the direction of the Master Healer of the Weyr, He also became quite known as a party boy. His secret no longer became quite as secret, and because he was so well liked, most of the Riders came to accept it, though there was a rough month of having to convince all of his friends, with the help of the weyrleaders, that except when a dragon was in pain, Daevon ignored the constant chatter inside his head.
At 50 turns old, Daevon was called back to Healer's Hall to walk the tables. Over the past few turns, Daevon had calmed down soon, but he knew that he could not form a relationship with any of those whom he had been so hedonistic with before, so he found himself more and more without a bed partner, something he slowly came to accept.
Having reached the rank of Master, Daevon has been assigned to Telgar Weyr. The Master's decided that with such a large clutch having successfully hatched on the sands at Telgar and impressed, that was the population that would most need a Dragon Healer with his special abilities.
He was assured before he left that the Weyrleaders and Wingleaders at Telgar are aware of ability and that while it might take a while for the Riders at Telgar to make the adjustment, he would be supported. He could only hope that acceptance would follow, and perhaps with this new start, he could finally settle down, though he knew that 50 was an old age to start to try to settle down.
