Lara sat next to a tree. Her dress was plain though the shawl she wore was well dyed and made of a more expensive wool. It was a deep blue-green and more importantly was keeping the young woman warm. Cymmi, her firelizard was laying in the crook of her arm, content to be sleeping.
She looked at the reflections in the lake, letting her thoughts take her away from where she was sitting. Her mother had decided that she would stand as well as Janirsa and it bothered her. Larissa didn't want the glamour of being a Goldrider. Everyone knew you, everyone took what you said to be the letter of the law. It seemed to bother everyone she knew that she wanted to lead a simple but happy life.
Her dreams had been horrible since she attained Cymmi. If she slept the night through it was a miracle. Her dark blue eyes seemed to focus on everything and nothing. Hopefully she'd be too sick to attend the Hatching or something would come up to make her less acceptible.
Of course no Gold would save her from that as well. She just preferred not to count solely on that. Saharth was in her prime, she could very well lay a Gold. Ionuth was a young Bronze but he was also one of the best Igen had to offer. Larissa wouldn't be suprised if there was at least a few Bronzes, or a Gold. Wasn't Telgar Weyr spouting that their Queen was having 30 or more eggs per hatching. She'd like to see that. Igen Queens seemed to have half that.

Kanit was bored and waiting for a Queen to clutch he wanted to impress soon, so he could make his father proud. He saw Larissa and smiled as he walked to her, he would talk to her and maybe cure this boredom problem after all they were both at the same Weyr.
"Hello," He said hoping she was all right and would talk to him instead of ignore him like so many other people at the weyr and around the area.

Larissa was lost in thought when she heard the young man's voice. It caused her to jump slightly which in turn upset Cymmi. The brown fluttered his wings and screeched unhappily. "Sorry darlin." She said to the brown, who decided to reperch on her shoulder.
The youth had been completely forgotten for a moment before she remembered what had caused the commotion to begin with. "Oh, hi." The blonde woman said, not really sure if she'd seen him around before but he did seem familiar. He looked a bit like K'nor, whom she had met recently at a party. Better not to say anything lest she be wrong.
"I don't believe we've met. I'm Larissa and this is Cymmi." The brown decided to ignore the young man. Lara simply smiled at him and waited. She wasn't going to stand up, nor invite him to sit. After all, a girl had to be careful.

"I'm Kanit, a candidate for the next clutch." He said as he nodded a greeting to the little brown firelizard and smiled at the woman he was all right with standing by her. He was bored not desperate like so many others but he was also a Candidate and not allowed those things.

"Ahh. Saharth's clutching was what I was thinking of myself. My mother has insisted I stand if there is a Gold Egg. My sister wants it so much more than I do but she is the ambitious one. I don't want to stand. I'm afraid." Larissa confided easily in some people but not all. Kanit might count himself either lucky or unlucky that she was pouring her feelings out.
"I do hope she clutches soon. Though probably not for another day or two I should think." Larissa was hoping that it was longer because she almost didn't want to know. The blonde beauty, looked up at him again, hands in her lap. "I bet you aren't scared at all."
Most of the boys looked forward to impressing because they weren't going to be leading the Weyr staight off. No the challenge of it wasn't for her. The dragon would know her heart wasn't in it. Did living the life of a nanny bother everyone or just her family? There was nothing wrong with supporting the Weyr in ways other than riding a dragon or running the place.

"I'm not so much scared as nervous, my father is Weyrling Master so if I impress I have to work hard to prove to him I'm worth my dragon. Also I'm worried that if I impress less than a Brown he'll be angry with me." Kanit told her as he crouched down not quite sitting but not standing wither he wanted to be at eye level he hated standing above the people he was talking to becuase he was only a child compared to many people. He was also nervous of angering anyone that might say something to his Bronze riding father, who was a very proud man but also a kind person.

Larissa gave him a sad smile. "Why is it you boys are so focused on impressing for your father's approval? My brother was the same way. Since we were very young our father never really took notice of him. However, father found me to be the lovliest little girl and took to taking me to dinner and buying me gifts. Now my siblings despise me. My brother impressed a Bronze and is now Weyrsecond. Does my father even care? Most likely not."
That was the story as she chose to tell it. She left out anything about her mother and how she doted on her brother's every whim and that her sister was second only to him in her mother's eyes. Lara was well liked by her father and misunderstood by the rest of them. Loved, was not a word she would use to describe how any of them felt about her. That was the one thing she truly desired though the thought is kept to herself most of the time. Cymmi, understands the longing but not her thoughts so he nuzzles into her neck in a loving fashion.
"I do wish you would consider not impressing to impress someone else. Impress because more than anything you want to ride a dragon and feel that connection with someone that is greater than anything a non-rider will ever feel. If I were a braver, more ambitious person, I'd want that." Larissa looked away from the boy and out at the Lake. "I don't doubt you could do it , whatever your reasons, you sound determined."

"I do want to impress a Dragon for me, but I wouldn't mind impressing a color my father would be proud of. I feel as though Dragons are an honor and should be held in a high regard." Kanit spoke from his heart he was a Weyrbrat born and raised in the Weyr there was nothing that could change the fact that he was going to try and join his father as a Bronzerider.

"I don't see how impressing a certain color over another should make such a difference." She looked down at her hands, it made no difference to her. What if Kanit impressed a green? Would he care that his father approved or not? The poor dragon might feel rejected and could potentially Between.
There was an event she couldn't stand to see at a Hatching. dragonets Betweening due to lack of Candidates. She closed her eyes and sighed. So long as there weren't any maulings she could watch. This turn would be different were there a Gold, she would be forced to stand. That meant she couldn't simply watch.
"Good luck. Saharth might not have any Bronzes at all. My brother's dragon is a good Bronze but he is young...so who knows how this clutch will turn out."

"One can hope, but just wondering if there is Gold will you stand?" He asked he hoped she would but that was her choice he was just a kid, what did he know? He wanted a Dragon but his father was still an important part of his life and his mother wasn't really in his life so he had to make do with knowing his father.

Had he even been listening to her? She very much doubted it. The blonde woman sighed, "I have no choice. If there is a Gold I will stand." It was either that or face the wrath of her mother. The little brown firelizard nuzzled into her again, sending the distinct image that he was hungry. She too noted that it was about time to head in for something to eat. She had chores to do later.
"It has been nice talking with you. Hope you do not mind but I'm expected in the kitchens in a candlemark and this little fellow is a bit hungry." She indicated the firelizard and stood up. Her shaw remained wrapped around her shoulders though she patted the skirt of her dress to unwrinklle it. "Best wishes to you. Hopefully you will impress the dragon you've been dreaming of." Larissa hoped she would not share his fate.
