Contacts: Same as Corlin
Character
Name: Dilan
Rank: Senior Apprentice
Emphasis: None in particular, but he's very good at emergency wound care
Gender: male
Age: 16
Origin: Telgar
Appearance: If someone didn't know him, Dilan would give the impression of being a very young, sweet, even innocent little boy. Since he's on the smaller side at about 5'4" and fairly slim at 110 pounds, that impression is understandable. Although neither scrawny nor flabby, Dilan doesn't display obvious strength. No herdbeast's bulging muscles, no feline-like wiry strength. His movements are the quick, delicate movements of a bird - light touches, efficient. His face is round, but not chubby.
He's got baby-soft skin that has somehow stayed fair-toned and blemish free throughout his years as a herder and then puberty. Delicate hands with their neatly trimmed nails and smooth skin often bear the stain of redwort despite cleaning. Silky, gently curling golden hair wisps gently over his ears and jaw. Big brown eyes, the rich cinnamon-brown of klah, glimmer mischievously over a small, slightly upturned nose. He smiles easily and often.
He likes brightly colored clothing, but since they're hard to come by for someone of his financial means, he settles for light colored clothes of a simple cut. In his line of work this means that a lot of his clothing shows stains easily and has to be shrubbed a lot, but to Dilan it's worth it.
Family: Biological mother/father unknown
Adopted father: Boric (61) Telgar cotholder [deceased, runnerbeast accident]
Adopted mother: Amena (56) kitchen drudge
Adopted sister: Rashel (6)
Foster brothers: Yivar (19) cotholder's son, Genric (17) cotholder's son, Ferrin (15) weaver apprentice
Foster sisters: Herra (10) drudge's daughter, Danees (12) drudge's daughter
Sexual Orientation: bisexual
Personality: Dilan is about as cheerful as you can get without delving into completely horribly annoying. Nothing really seems to bother him. His motto is, more or less, "if you can't laugh about it, it's not worth thinking about." This isn't to say that Dilan can't do serious situations. Rather, he tries to find the good in everything. Ok, so he might have some avoidance issues. He might just be diffusing a volatile situation with a joke simply because he hates confrontation. For whatever reason he does it, Dilan is the peacekeeper, the mediator, the one who maybe can't fix the problem but by Faranth he'll make you feel good about life. He's also a great shoulder to cry on, since he's sympathetic and, importantly, discreet.
Dilan is extremely self-confident. He doesn't go into a situation timid and unsure of himself, he goes in guns blazing (figuratively speaking of course) and takes control. This is why he excels at emergencies. There's no moment of panic, no "I don't know if I can do this". He just does it without doubting himself. Perhaps in the future, when he loses a patient, he might experience a moment of self-doubt. But, Dilan's the kind of person who'll get passed it fairly quickly with a bit of soul-searching.
Something that might be considered a fault for Dilan (although he certainly doesn't think so) is that slight bit of nymphomania. Slight? Who am I trying to kid? The guy juggles lovers effortlessly. He may have been a little precocious in that area as well but that's only to be expected for someone who has studied anatomy in depth. Dilan doesn't kiss and tell, which is important since nearly all of his lovers have at least remained friends with him.
Hobbies/Skills: he does woodcarving, and is actually very good at it. He can also embroider, partly because he had to learn to do stitches for wounds, but he doesn't usually do it.
Pets: none, he’s always wanted his own canine but as an apprentice he can’t keep pets
History: Dilan was a foundling. Nothing is known of his real parentage, his birthplace, his life before being abandoned at just a few sevendays old. In fact, no one’s quite sure if he really was abandoned. What happened was this: Boric, a middle-aged cotholder, was returning with several young runnerbeasts from a Gather at Nabol Hold when he happened to hear the squalling of an infant. Upon investigating, he found a baby boy in front of the ruins of a cothold that had obviously been abandoned long before the child was even a thought. He didn’t know how long the child had been there, but he doubted that anyone was coming back for it. Besides, with his expensive new runnerbeasts he couldn’t really delay returning to his wife at their isolated cothold. At least, that was what he told himself. And so Boric returned home with Dilan. Amena, his wife, was of course delighted with the baby. She herself couldn’t have any children, so Dilan seemed like a miracle. The effort to find his real parents was only halfhearted and trailed off long before his first birthday.
Growing up, Dilan helped his adopted father a lot with the runnerbeasts, but he never showed any real aptitude with them. Oh, he was great at helping out if one was sick or injured, but anything else just didn’t hold interest for him. Boric was disappointed that Dilan wouldn’t follow in his footsteps. With the help of a couple of boys fostered from a nearby cothold, though, they got by well enough.
When Dilan was eight Turns old, Boric was killed in a runnerbeast accident. With no male of an age to properly care for the cothold, the family was forced to move to Telgar Hold itself. The fosterboys returned to their parents, leaving just Dilan and his mother to manage on their own. Amena began working in the kitchens – Dilan attended lessons like all the other holdbrats, and ran errands to try to help out financially. It was also that year that the hold’s resident healer noticed Dilan’s penchant for nursing injured animals back to health.
At ten Turns old, Dilan and his mother were approached by the healer. They were told that Dilan’s untrained skill with healing was remarkable, and that the boy really should be apprenticed as soon as possible at the Healer Hall. Dilan refused to go, though, believing that he needed to stay at Telgar to take care of his mother. It was another Turn before Amena insisted on him taking the chance – she knew Boric would have been proud of their adopted son for going into a Craft instead of being a drudge his whole life.
So it was that Dilan was just past eleven Turns when he arrived at Fort Hold. The next four years of apprenticeship were very interesting. First, while most boys his age were becoming aware of their attraction for girls, Dilan became aware of his attraction to them. Before long, the young boy was quite the little womanizer – although he spiced up his life with an equal number of his own sex. His bright disposition made him many friends, but his mischievous pranks made him quite a few enemies higher up in the ranks. This more than his level of skill, he figures, is why his apprenticeship has lasted five years already. Not that it bothers him – he genuinely enjoys his work as an apprentice.
Not long after Dilan left for the Healer's Hall, Amena adopted a little girl orphaned by disease so Dilan now has a sister.
