Character
Name: Narwina
Rank: Master
Emphasis: Pediatrics
Gender: female
Age: 54
Origin: A minor hold off of Tillek, called Tibrill
Appearance: Narwina is a slightly plump woman with chubby cheeks, full lips and a friendly look upon her face. She has wide hips and heavy bosom, some say it’s because she had several children, others say it’s because she is fairly well off. She is light skinned because she doesn’t care for the out doors too much. She has honey brown eyes and light brown hair as girl, but now has gone almost prematurely white. She jokes that it was the stress that did it to her. She looks very approachable, and often reminds people of their mothers. Narwina does bear signs of age, like wrinkles and grey hair at her temple. Her hands, while fleshy, are still nimble and have healing touch. She has wide palms-the sign of the worker- and she is quite good with them.
She often wears appropriate and always suitable clothing with high necklines sleeves to the elbows, and skirts that are ankle length so that they do not drag. Her dresses are usually brown or more than likely a steely grey with a bright white apron that ties at the neck and waist, with pockets at the waist. She wears ladies’ black button boots to half calf, and never wears jewelry. Her brown hair is always swept to the top of her head, pinned there, and in her nursing days, topped with a white starchy wimple. Now she doesn’t wear it as often
Family:
Father: Norvin, (deceased) was once the head cook at their minor hold.
Mother: Helanette, 75, she was a wife and mother before all things, though once her children were grown, she worked beside her husband in the kitchens.
Brother: Orvin, 57, master smith, married to Vela, 2 children
Brother: J'pal, 55, bluerider at High Reaches Weyr, 8 children
Husband: Darred, 58, master harper
Daughter: Lambria, 25, former apprentice healer, she just wasn't interested in it anymore. Too interested in love and courting. Married to a journeyman healer.
Daughter: Platonia, 22, no craft. She has an imagination on her, and likes to make up stories. Probably should have went into the Harper Hall.
Son: Bennik 20, apprentice healer, besotted with Alsea, the daughter of Lord Merrek. Named after his grandfather.
Daughter: Seline, 14, likes to sing while her father plays on his gitar.
Granddaughter: Leana, 3, daughter of Lambria and her husband. Narwina loves the little girl to peices, even if Leana's got another brother or sister on the way, Leana will always have Narwina's favor as first born.
Grandson: Legrant, 0, son of Lambria and her husband. A boy is very good for the crafts, as women are less and less even considered serious applicants. She loves him very much too as a grandmother should.
Sexual Orientation: Hetero
Personality: She is a very pleasant woman, and truly believes that laughter is the best medicine, despite her craft’s strength in actual medicine. She is a very happy woman that many people like to deal with, but she still has a certain sophisticated air when she deals with new people and her students during class. She is very passionate about her craft and good personal hygiene, and those who do not bathe at least once every day, will find themselves looking for another craft! And while she likes to have fun, she likes to see discipline in the field, there are lives at stake, doncha know!
There are a few things that will irk her to know end, messes and late people. Those would be the top two, and those types best watch out for this neat freak! She will lecture for hours on these subjects to a violator of her rules with out relenting. Other things that irk her is carelessness, and greed. She doesn’t like arrogance much either, but it doesn’t really phase her too much, unless the arrogant one is one of her students. Overconfidence is never a good thing and can prove disasterous in healing situations. Narwina takes punishments seriously and is very disappointed in any one who lies to her or tries to give excuses.
Narwina is typically a forgiving woman, and doesn’t stay mad for too long-depending on the severity of the case. She would rather be on good relations with people, and loves to send messages and letters. She is also very trustworthy and dependable, something she constantly has to prove to the other all MALE masters who believe she should have never got to their rank.
Hobbies/Skills: Dancing is one of Narwina's favorties. Once Darred got his harper buddies and a candle lit room to surprize her. They danced the night away, all slow, lovely tunes, and at the end of the night, while he was returning her to her room, he proposed. It is one of Narwina's favorite memories, and part of the reason why she loves dancing so much.
Stitching was something her mother taught her growing up, and she still embroiders things for friends and family. It keeps her eye-hand coordination strong after all these turns.
Pets: Too busy for pets.
History: Narwina grew up in a minor hold near Tillek called Tibrill to the then Head Cook Norvin and his wife, Helanette. The two were young when they had their eldest, Orvin, and then Jaspal, now J’pal, a bluerider for High Reaches Weyr. Narwina was the third and the last child born to the couple. Helanette was a very quiet and obedient woman, and Norvin was a gentle man. They were a very loving and close family, instilling strict moral values in their children. Of course, J’bal has adapted these to life in the Weyr. Orvin, Jaspal, and Narwina were the best of friends growing up, until they were split up by craft. Orvin was the strong, brave one of the three, Jaspal was the restless and impatient one, and Narwina was the sweet, innocent of the three. Their father was a brilliant cook, and had quite the reputation by the age of thirty. He got an offer he couldn't refuse when the children were small. The Craftmaster of the Healer Hall (at that time, the man is now long deceased) had requested some baked goods from Norvin. It wasn't long until the master requested Norvin come to Healer Hall to be his personal cook. So off the family went, excited for the nice things they might have under the employ of the Craft Master.
As time cannot stop, the children all would have to grow up. The children shared the same friends, and the same pains in life, and it was very hard and shocking when Orvin became apprenticed to the Smith Hall when he was 11(Jaspal was 9 and Narwina was 8). He was barely home to see the others but he tried to come spend time with them. Jaspal tried the harpercraft, but was only there for three turns, and was 15 when he decided to quit. He was studying to take over for his father when at the age of 17 was searched for Fort Weyr and later Impressed a blue. Narwina' father got her the chance of a lifetime at the age of 12, for she was to be enrolled in the healer craft thanks to her father's connections.
Immediately she started to excel, but was not awknowledged often by her masters. It was hard for a girl in the craft to make friends because the boys were so jealous. (Though if they were so much better than her, why would they fear her so?) She met her best friend, Nalya (who was the daughter of a Journeyman healer at the hall) the first week of her apprenticeship and she cherished their friendship. Her other very close friend was Yumar, who wanted to specialize in dragon healing, and eventually Impress. It took longer for her and Yumar to be friends, and over the turns apart they had grown apart, somewhat. But at the time Nalya and Yumar became her family and took the place of her siblings. She spent every holiday and festival day with them, and spent her hard times with them as well as the good.
Narwina was always good with names and faces so she knew of a lot of journeymen and apprentices, not to mention her masters. She studied hard, but always tried to make time for her two best friends.
Though life wasn't always beautiful. No matter how she excelled, for it appeared she had inherited her father's determination, she would always be put behind the boys. Her teachers ignored her when she wanted to answer a question, and the boys in her classes sneered at her. In fact, Yumar was the only boy friend she had! Through the turns she witnessed the few girls all dropping out of her class because of the pressure, and the want of family. Nalya was one of those girls. Narwina was determined more than ever to make it into journeymanhood, no matter how hard she had to try, no matter how far she had to go. She knew she had better grades than half the boys in her class, and if given the chance she'd out shine them in the field. Narwina also was well aware that the masters were just waiting for her to slip so that they could say, 'We don't think healing is the route for you.' Well she wouldn't settle just being a wife, or even just as a midwife. She wanted to be those things, but she wanted an official rank with it!
It was when she was seventeen, five turns into her apprenticeship, that a young man by the name of Darred started to pay particular attention to her. He was a journeyman harper of 21, and was known as an outgoing man with an impeccable reputation. Her mother was estatic, however it was also at this time that Narwina met Relvin, another harper with a more promiscuous personality. Where Darred was dark and handsome, Relvin was golden and absolutely gorgeous.
It soon came out that Relvin was technically R’vin because he was Impressed to a blue dragon. She felt so stupid, thinking he was just at the hold for Search. Yet he claimed that he had a sick mother at Fort Hold, so that was why he was at Healer Hall the first time they met. He was also an aquaintence of her brother’s. This meant that when she was allowed to visit J'pal, R’vin was always there to woo her. When she was halfway through her seventeenth turn, she and Yumar were chosen to study with the Weyrhealer at Fort Weyr for a while. She was closer to being ensnared and used by R'vin. Narwina was in danger and she didn't even realize it. Still, for some reason she could not explain, Narwina still kept sending messages to Darred all the while.
R’vin loved women, and knew how to entrance them, and he swept Narwina off her feet, he blinded her to the truths with pretty promises and handsome poems. He was an excellent dancer, and a conssiuer at flirting, not to mention R’vin was very athletic. Darred’s attentions were not as forward as R’vin, and he was a little shy around Narwina. The healer-girl never thought Darred was really interested romantically, and was too much entranced with R’vin to notice the other harper. She thought that R’vin could be the love of her life, and was prepared to follow him to the Weyr permanently, if necessary. However, he had no intention of keeping her long term. R’vin was only going to keep her around just long enough to use her. Nothing her parents or friends could say would make her turn from the bluerider. In fact, Narwina, when she was eighteen, after many sevendays of courtship and flirtations, decided she was going to sleep with R'vin. It was a decision that she made based on her vision of R’vin, whom she thought was noble and gallant. After all, she thought she was going to spend the rest of her life with him.
So that fateful night she left her rooms. Darred, who was bringing a message from his Craftmaster to the harper stationed at Fort Weyr, was waiting there, surprising Narwina. He pleaded her to come back with him, and when she asked him why, he proclaimed his love and kissed her passionately. Narwina looked back on their relationship in the last turn, and felt so stupid. He did love her! And she realized, that her feelings too were tender and true towards him. They returned to Fort Hold, and she still had her innocence. A few sevendays later, Yumar came back to Healer Hall to get his journeyman’s knots.
When she was just shy of 19 turns, Yumar, was made journeymen. Nalya and Narwina suspected it was because he was a boy, and Narwina decided to keep studying, but Yumar transferred to Fort Weyr. Yumar studied under the Weyr Healer, and finally Impressed a fine brown dragon within the turn.Y'mar would never be able to leave a Weyr now. He was finally going to be a dragon healer. When she was twenty three she finally walked the tables. Darred, after a turn of formal courtship, married Narwina, and while they had different assignments in their journeyman-hood they still found time to have a home, and have four children: One son and three girls.
Narwina was finally made a master specializing in midwifery and pediatrics at the age of 50 turns. It was a long, hard road, longer than it should have been, based on prejudice alone. She loves to teach her specialty along with general healing to apprentices and journeymen, and it gives her great pleasure to see one of her students excel. It has been incredibly difficult being a female master among men. She does not get the same respect they give each other, and she knows that they speak about her behind her back. Unfortunately her colleagues are not the kindest to her. Most do not like the fact that she is ranked among them, and have expressed that they believe she should have been kept a nurse (journeyman) and perhaps been left with the title of Head Nurse to satisfy her.
Family-wise, her daughter, whom she had worked so hard to get into the craft, quit being a healer for a boy and married him. Their union, after three turns, produced a baby girl, and Narwina is expecting her second grandchild any day now. Narwina's other children are all unmarried, though her son Bennik, or Benny as she alone calls him, is besotted with Lord Merrek's daughter Alsea. With a Lord Holder's daughter! Of all the foolishness, she can't believe her own son could be so silly. She does not approve of him wasting his time oogling over some rich brat, and has tried to distract him with more duties and a canine he named Oshwind.
