Character
Name: Adryn
Rank: Headwoman
Emphasis: N/A
Gender: Female
Age: 44
Origin: Fort Hall
Appearance: Grey eyes and full lips are the focus of her strong but feminine face. Having aged gracefully, her face is mostly free of wrinkles and only a bit of grey streaks her almost-black hair. Bangs frame her face while the rest of hair cascades past her shoulder in subtle waves.
She is not overly thin, but neither does she have any excess fat on her. She is quite shapely, particularly blessed in the breasts, but with hips that are well proportionate to the rest of her, though her breasts are a much better asset than her hips. Her but is firm, and frequently, she finds that some of the Masters she's particularly friendly with like to smack her butt as she walks by, earning a flirtatious wink from her.
She dresses to flaunt what she has: low cut tops that tend to support and draw attention to her well formed breasts and taper into her waist. She tends to wear skirts that are well fitted and often with a slit up one leg to the mid-thigh.
Family:
Father: Rothran (66), Retired Master Healer, Speciality: General Health, Adults.
Mother: Serudyn (64), Retired Mid-wife (In most pre-industrial societies, women took care of childbirth, so I figure this is kind of like the equilavent of an Apprentice rank-wise and acceptable for women. If this is an issue, let me know and I'll change it.)
Siblings: None. There were complications in Adryn's birth and she was not able to carry a child to term after that.
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Personality:
Maternal. If one were to summarize Adryn in a single word it would be Maternal. She is the perpetual mother and claims all who rank below the level of Master to be one of her children. Accept her claim or not, she is the person to go to if the pressure is getting to be too much and you need a sympathetic ear but don't want to appear weak before the masters. She's also the one to tsk over someone who is too thin and to make sure that they eat more. Regarding the Masters, she will make sure that they eat as well, but her concern is obviously less maternal.
Self-sufficient. Adryn has no need for a man to take care of her, and she cares far too much about the Master's to pick just one
of them. While she loves all the people at the Healer's Hall, she treasures the time that she has to herself, and frequently fines solace in the quiet and solitude of her own quarters.
Lusty. Adryn has an appetite for life and an appetite for the finer things in life. She gets paid well and her wardrobe and quarters reflect that, though she also has simple work clothes that can be dirtied without a problem. She also enjoys rich foods and wines, though is careful to not over indulge. However, what she enjoys most is carousing with the Masters and some of the Senior Journeymen - though she has a strict rule about coming in between a marriage (usually).
Nosey. Adryn's biggest flaw, or at least the one she'd admit to, is that she's nosey. She is the biggest consumer of gossip at the Healer Hall. She loves to know what is going on in everyone's life and who is with who. She would claim that she is just concerned about her kids, but the truth of the matter is that she really just enjoys juicy gossip. However, she is able to shift through it and is careful to not spread anything that can hurt anyone. These are her kids after all!
Proud. Adryn is a very proud woman. She will not allow anyone to push her around and is more than willing to stand up to anyone regardless of rank.
Hobbies/Skills:
Cooking. While her parents had hoped that Adryn would follow in her mother's footsteps and become a mid-wife, Adryn showed little interest in the healing craft. She knew it was important, but beyond basic first aid, she had no interest in focusing on the human body. Instead she spent her time in the kitchens learning how to cook, and particularly paying attention to gourmet dishes made for feasts and special occasions. As the daughter of a healer, she also learned which foods could be dangerous - like too much salt - and figured out tasty substitutes. While being Headwoman means that she does not get to spend as much time cooking, she still takes an active part in preparing the meals for feasts - though she uses her position to focus on desserts!
Babies. Adryn loves to spend time with children, especially babies. She very much likes to give them back when she's done with them though. Since she never had any of her own, she is quite fascinated with the little things and has been caught, more than once, with a tear in her eye when she hands a child back to his or her mother.
Knitting. Adryn does not sew. She does not embroider. However, when she is sitting and talking and needs to be doing something with her hands, the knitting needles and rolls of yarn are the natural objects to fill them with. She is constantly working on a project or four. She tends to make a gift for every Apprentice when they walk the Tables and for Journeymen when they reach the Master level.

History:
Adryn's parents had worked hard to conceive. The young journeyman and his wife desperately wanted children. They had dreams of a big family and being stationed at a major hold. However, life did not work out the way that they wanted it to. It had taken a couple of years before Serudyn was able to conceive, and the pregnancy was fraught with difficulties. The birth itself had almost resulted in both her death and the child's. They had been advised against trying for any more children, but Serudyn convinced Rothran, and they did conceive again, several times. But each time, there was a miscarriage.
During this time, Adryn was not remotely neglected. Her parents treasured her and spoiled her. There was nothing that the young child desired that she did not receive. By the time she was 4, she had become quite the brat. That was about the time that they stopped attempting any further pregnancies, and her parents realized that they were ruining their daughter. While they did not stop treasuring her, they did begin discipline - though it was difficult considering they'd already taught her that she always got her way.
By the time she was eight, the brat only emerged on occasions, and she became quite the likable precocious child. She was always among the top of her classes, at least the ones that she applied herself to. She could read and write and knew most of the teaching ballads that were taught to children, though she always sang softly as she had no confidence in her voice at all!
By age ten, her father had been moved to Igen Hold where they lived for the next five turns. While she missed her friends back at Fort, she managed to make friends quickly and even became a leader among them, often leading them in games. As she became older, she had more boys flocked around her than girls and developed her first taste for gossip. It was also during this time that she fell in love with cooking.
There was something about cooking that greatly interested her. She loved the creativity of taking boring - and often gross appearing - food and turning it into something that not only was eatable but tasted good. She was an eager student and the cook of Igen decided that there was no harm in teaching the young girl the tricks of the trade. She quickly learned about herbs and could almost instinctively know what and how much to use with any given dish. She would later reveal that the secret was in smell. If foods smelt right together, they would taste right together as well. What she really loved in the kitchen though, was deserts. Sweets always made people light up, and nothing cheered Adryn more making people smile.
Unfortunately, there were a couple of mistakes in those earliest days in the kitchens that have always stayed with her. Her right thumb has a very small scar from cutting herself when she was cutting apples, and there is a scar on her left arm from paying attention and letting her left sleeve catch on fire. Though the damage was minimal, the lesson was learned, and Adryn is always careful and respectful around fire.
At fifteen turns, Adryn moved with her parents again, this time back to Fort. Her father was showing promise, and the Masters had decided that as a Senior Journeyman he was ready to begin to teach the youngest Apprentices - a job that the Masters generally did not want as the youngest tended to be rather rowdy. While this move was great for her family - as it suggested that her father would probably reach the position of Master and would be serving at Fort Hold - Adryn spent about a month sulking.
Seeking to provide direction or his daughter, Rothran tried to enroll her as an Apprentice, though she was rather old to start. Adryn would have none of it, and her parents greatly feared that the brat had returned. Much to her parents' disappointment, Adryn seemed to find direction again in the kitchens, and she took pride in the meals that she helped create.
It was at age 18 that Adryn first came to fully appreciate the social advantage to living at Healer Hall. That was the first time that she spent the night in the arms of a Journeyman, on the evening when he had just walked the tables. The two of them spent a turn together, but neither she nor Trayt was made for commitment, and while he is now a Master and one she often finds herself going to for companionship, they both agreed that settling down was not for them, especially when he was assigned to Ista and she was rising in the kitchens.
It was Trayt that Adryn came to when she decided that she wanted to have children. The two were close enough that even though they could not commit to be monogamy, they were agreed to work together to have children, with Adryn making sure to not have any other plans when he came to Healer Hall. By the time Adryn was 25, she had become frustrated with her inability to conceive and it Trayt she sought out to give her an exam. That night, they spent together but Adryn was in tears. She knew she would never have a child.
By the age of 27, Adryn had been promoted out of the kitchens to become the Assistant Headwoman, though she had argued long and hard with the then Headwoman that she would only accept that position if she would still be allowed to help in the kitchens from time to time. Apparently, the Cook was furious at having her stolen from her, but she could not deny the young woman the opportunity and readily agreed to allow her to continue in the kitchens.
Her mentor retired at the 60, and at age 35, Adryn ascended to the position of Headwoman. She enjoys the work, but more than that, she enjoys the opportunity to take care of the people of Healer Hall, and she definitely enjoys the way that the Masters take care of her.
Trayt had been called back as a Senior Journeyman, in much the similar position as to what her father once held, though he has now reached the rank of a Master, specializing in pediatrics. While neither is remotely true to each other, if there is any one man that Adryn spends time with more than the others, its Trayt.
