Pets: Corlin brought with him a breeding pair of the longhaired black-and-tan canines he had used as a trader to herd and guard their livestock. The pair has since retired to pet status, but Corlin kept three adolescent offspring, one male and two female, and two female adults, along with an unrelated male and two females sent from his brother. They are all much the same personality: incredibly intelligent, very active, and fiercely protective. Adults – Jondar (male), Sasha (female), Sharp (male), Teeka {Jondar/Sasha} (female), Sel {Jondar/Sasha} (Female)…. Adolescents – Fetch {Jondar/Sasha} (male), Fancy {Jondar/Sasha} (Female), Poke (Female), Tenna {Jondar/Sasha} (female), Flit (female)
Appearance: Corlin is a tall, strong man. His long hours caring for herdbeasts show in the sleek ripple of muscle beneath tanned skin. His broad shoulders would have perhaps been put to better use as a smith but they allowed Corlin to easily control rebellious beasts when a smaller man could not. Large, strong hands liberally laced with the scars of a lifetime of small nicks and cuts show surprising dexterity in stitching up injured animals. His short hair is, like most of his relatives’, dark reddish brown and quite thick. His strong jaw is covered in a short beard. Hair and beard alike are kept neat and trimmed. His most striking features are his bright green eyes, another family trait. Despite being a somewhat bear-like man, Corlin is very light on his feet and enjoys the occasional dance with his frail wife. Sturdy leather boots and simple, well-worn clothing abound in his closet, although he does have a nice black outfit he reserves for Gathers - and he does look quite dashing in it.
Personality: Corlin has always been a fair man. This as much as the fact that he was the oldest boy was why he inherited leadership of the family trade caravan when his father died. If he’s wrong, he’ll admit it, even if it's years later. This is good, because he also inherited his father's temper. Not that he’s a physically violent man – he was on the receiving end of his father's beatings too many times to wish it on anyone else. No, if Corlin looses his temper he's much more likely too snarl and stalk off somewhere to cool down. At worst he'd take his anger out on something like a wall or a tree. And always, he makes it a point to apologize after he’s cooled down.
He tends to be overly serious... if someone was looking for a co-conspirator for a prank, Corlin would not be the one to ask. This probably stems from his father harping on him about responsibility and duty. That may also be why he blames himself so strongly for the illness that took his daughters and granddaughters.
Corlin refuses to drink any sort of alcohol, and loves bubbly pies.
History: As the oldest son of the Killarni caravan's leader, Corlin was groomed from birth to be able to take over from his father. Of course, with Markis born less than a year later the pressure was not completely on him. They spent their first three Turns with their mother or with the other children in the caravan's creche, but from the time that they were four both brothers spent the bulk of their time with their father.
While other kids their age were off running around playing games, Corlin and Markis were learning the subtle art of trading. Although they were really only doing a lot of fidgeting and whining at that point. Their father wasn't a patient man and since he expected a great deal more from his older sons than he should have, he had even less patience for them. Needless to say Corlin learned at a very young age to sit still and be silent.
By the time they were seven, the brothers had far outstripped their age group in arithmetic and reading, but were far behind in social skills. It was their older sister Teerin, long spoiled by their father, and younger brother Tevin, who as the third son had been lucky enough to escape notice, who took it upon themselves to "educate" Corlin and Markis. They were constantly dragging the brothers into their pranks and silly games. The first time they got caught, however, Corlin as the oldest (who of course should know better than to play pranks) was beaten severely. After that, Teerin was careful to always take the blame for whatever they'd done and insist that Corlin hadn't been involved. Their father couldn't bring himself to strap Teerin for something, and so things were well.
At thirteen Corlin was working with the herdsmen. He'd shown an aptitude for animals and had already trained his own puppy to do tricks. He learned to ride runnerbeasts quicker than his brothers, a trait he shared with his sister Teerin. In fact, it was Teneen he was replacing as a herder, since she was married that same year. With Markis spending more time with Tevin and Teerin with her new husband Chal, Corlin found himself feeling very much alone. To make up for it, he threw himself into his work. By the time he was sixteen he could tell by instinct when one of his charges was sick or injured, could treat them effectively, knew the pedigree of each herd- and runnerbeast back ten generations, and had begun breeding some very highly specialized herding canines.
Which brings us to the next very important part of Corlin's history: his first love. Sharlis was a year older than him, the youngest daughter of one of the herdsmen. She was beautiful, smart, funny... and she didn't even know Corlin existed. Well, she knew who he was, since he was the leader's son, but she was blithely unaware whenever he was around. He mooned over her for years. When he was 18 his father took him aside for a father-son talk about how it was his duty to marry and sire children to carry on the family for another generation. But Sharlis still hadn't shown an interest in him, and Corlin was still too shy to approach her, so he remained unmarried.
And so he turned 20 and was given responsibility over all of the caravan's herds. Teerin, sick of seeing her brother unhappy and being the interfering big sister that she was, bluntly informed Sharlis of Corlin's love for her. Surprisingly (at least for Corlin), the woman had felt the same way about him for many years and had simply not been aware that he loved her. Since Corlin still didn't act, Sharlis took it upon herself to act for him. One night, she made her sneaky way into his wagon and proceeded to seduce him. A month and a half later, she informed him that she was pregnant.
Unsurprisingly, they were married within the week and were blissfully happy. Rantik was born in due time, followed by Farli and Samintha. Two Turns after Samintha's birth, Sharlis was pregnant again. This time, though, the pregnancy was difficult. She was pale, sickly, and lethargic. When Teerin, who was midwife for the caravan now, expressed concern, Sharlis just waved it off and continued her everyday routine. This was very bad - she went into labor several months early, resulting in the death of the child and herself.
Corlin was, as expected, devastated. He abandoned his young children to the care of a young creche nurse name Jancis, went into a deep depression and began drinking heavily. His mother's death from illness a few months later made him even worse. The young herdsman probably would have drank himself right to death if it hadn't been for Jancis. She made it a point to spend almost every waking moment by his side, bullying him into eating, taking away all his alcohol, tripping him into the lake when he needed to bathe. Then she tripped him into her bed, and began spending every night with him too. A Turn and a half after Sharlis' death, Teneen was born. Corlin and Jancis were married very soon after.
With his father's death when he was 35, Corlin became the leader of the caravan. Things were going pretty well, for a while. The caravan prospered under his leadership, and everyone was happy. Seven Turns later, though, Teerin was killed when the runnerbeast she was riding spooked and slid off the edge of a cliff. Only a few days later, her widower Chal was caught with Corlin's youngest sister Parlin. Parlin's distraught husband Finbar demanded that Chal be sent away from the caravan. Corlin was left the unpleasant task of deciding what to do about that. In the end, he agreed with Finbar and Chal was asked to leave. Imagine the uproar a few months later when Parlin was found to be pregnant - and not with Finbar's child. It was even worse when Parlin died giving birth to a healthy young boy who was to be named Zain - especially so since Finbar had only given her daughters.
After that little bit of excitement, things went smoothly once more. Jancis finally got pregnant again eight Turns after her first, giving birth to Ronin, and two Turns later to Nevin. Corlin's oldest daughter Farli gave birth to a little girl. Two Turns later she was pregnant again, and so was Jancis. But this time, Jancis began to show the same signs of lethargy, sickliness, and listlessness that Sharlis had when she'd died. Jancis meant everything to Corlin, and he was absolutely terrified that she'd die. After several months of agonizing about how to help her, the caravan stopped at Telgar Weyr. When it moved on again, it was with Markis as leader. Corlin had decided to stay at the Weyr as a herdsman, where life would be easier on his sickly wife. Besides, Markis was easily as qualified to lead as he was.
The decision was a good one - Jancis gave birth a month early to a daughter, Carli, but with the Weyr's healers on hand she made a full recovery.
A scarce few months after Carli's birth, word reached them that the Killarni caravan had been struck by a severe illness. Many of the traders had died, including Corlin's brother Tevin, his nephew Kindin, three of Finbar's daughters, and worse - Samintha and Teneen had both succumbed, and Farli grieved the loss of both her daughters. Corlin blames himself for what happened... maybe if he had been there he could have saved his daughters and granddaughters from death.
