Q'bre's children: Weyrbrat Casbre (Age 4) at Fort Weyr, Weyrbrat Quascre (Age 3) at Fort Weyr, Weyrbrat Nabrea (Age 1) at Fort Weyr
Appearance: Q'tre appearance has certainly changed throughout his turns, but he still maintains the overall air and appearance of a strong, intelligent, and kindly man. Over the turns he has maintained a full head of completely silver, thin hair with only slight widows peaks to accentuate his broad, wrinkled forehead. His eyebrows, the same silvery white color as the thin hair on his head, are faint against his well-lined and pale skin. Q'tre's powdery blue/gray eyes, surrounded by more lines than ever now, have lost a bit of their luster since Marisol's death, but hints of his determined personality still live there. His ears are relatively large, as they seem to be growing as he ages, which is something he jokes about as his hearing isn't getting any better. Lines around Q'tre's mouth and eyes betray his tendency to grin and laugh, A bit of extra skin beneath his jaw and the recent addition of a belly gives away the fact that he's been enjoying his retirement with the Weyr's fine culinary offerings, though he has lost a bit of weight since Marisol's death and his own bout of cough.
As a young man, Q'tre stood around 6'0'', but his age and current posture leave him around 5'10''-5'11'' these days. 60 turns with a bronze dragon has left Q'tre in better shape than most men his age. Q'tre has always enjoyed donning himself in tailored, clean, but simple clothing. He often chooses pale colors and conservative cuts with the traditional boots that dragonriders favor. The bronzerider's hands are one aspect of his appearance that truly give away his age. Slightly swollen and gnarled by painful arthritis, Q'tre's hands show his turns. Q'tre also suffers from arthritic knees, a condition that seems to cause him more pain and stiffness in the Winter months.
Personality: Q'tre has always been a stubborn person, even when he was just a lad growing up in Ruatha Hold. This particular facet of his personality most likely stems from his confidence in his ideas and beliefs. Of course, that confidence comes from the time, effort, and logic Q'tre puts into anything he's passionate about. Q'tre has always joked that his father's status as a brownrider gave him a better head on his shoulders, and a stronger work ethic, than most bronzeriders seem to have. On the other hand, Q'tre has been known to stubbornly defend his ideas even when they turn out to be wrong or not the best, and when someone disagrees with something he passionately believes in he is not above ignoring them completely.
That same stubborness, combined with a well-developed work ethic and determination, makes Q'tre a great leader. He most often leads by example, believing he should not ask anything of those he leads that he would not do himself, which most people seem to prefer over just being bossed around. Q'tre is never bothered by criticism towards his leadership techniques, another side of his stubborn personality with a dash of perseverance, but he does always try to listen to constructive criticism.
In relationships and everyday life, Q'tre keeps his emotions and feelings to himself, which tends to make him look strong in public, but also tends to frustrate his partners. Marisol was really the only woman who could ever make him feel comfortable about talking about the mushier side of life. Q'tre is charming, as most bronzeriders seem to be, but he has toned it down over the turns. He enjoys speaking to weyrlings and young riders, the future of the Weyr and of Pern in general. He also enjoys relaxing with jokes and wine, but only after the work is done.
History:
Q'tre, born Quantre, was the only child of a pairing between brown rider T'lre and Quane, the daughter of Fort Hold's Headwoman at the time. Young Quantre grew up with his father's sister and her husband as his foster parents. Even from a young age, Quantre looked forward to a life amongst the dragons, as no other craft or type of Hold life seemed to catch his eye. As a youngster, Quantre worked in Ruatha Hold's stables to earn his keep, worked through his Harper lessons diligently, and tried to keep his half-sister as focused as himself. Shortly after Quantre turned thirteen, dragons from Fort Weyr visited Ruatha on search for their Queen's clutch. Quantre was one of the few boys picked from the many presented to the search dragons, and he returned to the Weyr in hopes of becoming a dragonman.
Young Quantre stood on the sands a few sevendays later, barefoot and anxious, but no creeling newborn dragon sought out the Weyrbred lad. Quantre, stubborn and determined even in his youth, did not let his failure on the sands that day deter him from his dreams, and he would be rewarded two turns later. At age fifteen, Quantre, slightly awkward due to a growth spurt, stood amongst the candidates eagerly seeking out a dragon partner from Gold Avrith and Bronze Slelth's 29th clutch. The hatching started with a rush of noise as five eggs burst almost at the same time. One of the five eggs hatched a brightly hued little bronze who took no time at all to find his. Q'tre. my name is Tlanth and I am very, very hungry. The newly dubbed Q'tre laughed as he unashamedly felt tears stream down his cheeks, and he shouted out to the onlookers as he lead his new friend to his first meal, "His name is Tlanth!"
Through Weyrling training, Q'tre and Tlanth showed great promise. The determination that made Q'tre a great pupil of the Hold Harper made him an excellent pupil of the Weyr's Weyrlingmaster, and Tlanth was only too happy to match his rider's drive. After their graduation to full-rider status, this will to succeed made the pair successful in their share of mating flights amongst the young queens.
Tlanth's first female prize was a dainty queen Kyrenyth. Q'tre and Olena, Kyrenyth's rider, had nothing more than physical attraction between them, but that and a little more easily leads to a child. Thus, Q'tre became a father to a boy named Qualre when he was only 21 turns old.
Being a dragonrider, Q'tre was not required nor able to put a lot of time into his son's rearing, so he was able to maintain his focus and devotion to the Weyr. At age 26, Q'tre and his bronze had more than proven themselves, and the pair became a Wingleader pair at Fort Weyr. Over the next couple of turns, Tlanth succeeded in mating flights, but Q'tre also took his interests to nearby Fort Hold, as his father had. Q'tre had a fling with a pretty kitchenworker, Jevaisa, and soon after added a boy named Jevatre to the Weyr's creche.
Now into his third decade, Q'tre wanted more than just the physical pleasure he gained from Tlanth's mastery of Fort's rising females, Q'tre wanted love. The bronzerider began noticing a fiery Jr. Weyrwoman by the name of Sabine, and as luck might have it, she started to notice him too. The two riders really began to hit it off, sharing common upbringings in the Hold's, making sure the other got enough sleep between assigned duties, and the like. In 1028 Tlanth caught Sabine's Gold Coahuilth, and the riders' bond became physical and mental. Tlanth would go on to catch Coahuilth three more times, with Sabine giving birth to a daughter and son as a result. After the third flight between Tlanth and Coahuilth, Sabine found herself with child once again, but it wasn't meant to be. Sabine and her child died during a difficult labor.
Q'tre threw himself full-tilt into his Wingleader duties as his way of grieving. His success within the Weyr distracted his mind from the pain in his heart, and that's exactly what he needed.
In 1031, Q'tre gladly offered himself up for a transfer to Telgar Weyr in exchange for Gold Talorath. Two turns had passed since Sabine's death, and Q'tre had not felt or sought out love since, but he couldn't help it when he arrived at Telgar Weyr and met Marisol. He felt himself falling in love again, he loved Marisol. Q'tre knew Marisol had no physical attraction to her weyrmate, J'teb, but he still had to prove to Marisol that they needed each other. Despite Marisol's resistance to his wooing, Tlanth successfully flew Beynath in 1039 and Q'tre became Marisol's weyrmate.
Q'tre enjoyed his newly found promotion in the position of Weyrleader, but even more he enjoyed his promotion to weyrmate of his beloved Marisol. Telgar Weyr has not hosted Weyrgames for decades, but upon Q'tre's insistence Marisol has recently uplifted her ban of the training tool. He understands and appreciates her call for safety and tries to make sure everyone is careful, but with thread returning the wings need practice to remain safe too.
Q'tre and Marisol decided to reluctantly retire recently. Q'tre knows there are younger, fitter, men more than ready for the job, and he knows its time to step back, but the decision was still difficult. The idea of having much more time to spend with Marisol leaves him hopeful.
Dragon Info
Name: Tlanth
Age: 60 turns
Color: Bronze
Appearance: Tlanth is smaller in size than many of the younger bronze dragons currently leading the Wings and Weyrs about Pern, but in his day he was a good-sized bronze. The old bronze's muzzle has turned gray over the turns, but his hide still gleams with the bright, brassy, bronze of his youth. Q'tre always said his bronze's bright, gold-tinted coloration matched well with the vibrant gold of Beynath. If you watch carefully, you can see the extra effort Tlanth has to put into getting airborne these days, but you'll never hear a complaint from the old bronze.
Personality: Tlanth has always been a talkative, but reasonable dragon. Whenever Q'tre spent sleepless days going over Weyr and/or Wing issues, Tlanth was often the voice of reason. The old bronze has always loved talking, sarcastic little comments to his rider, tips to his wingmates, encouraging snippets to candidates and Weyrlings, etc.
These days, Tlanth's favorite activities include lazily soaking up as much sun as he can, swimming no matter what the temperature of the water, and watching the young Weyrlings, the future of the Weyr, grow and learn.
History: The large, mottled orange and brown egg tipped over onto the hot sands, and a resounding crack signaled the arrival of a sturdy little bronze with a bright hide. Tlanth hatched second, to cheers of welcome from the Fort Weyr dragonriders in the stands, but impressed first. The little bronze ungracefully made his way to a fifteen turn old boy who wasn't at all graceful himself with his new found height, and the two started their long partnership.
Tlanth's time as a weyrling was average, he and his rider worked hard to do well, and they became a full-rider pair who showed great promise. The brightly hued Tlanth soon became known for his skill in the air during mating flights, which definitely got him noticed. Tlanth and his rider worked their way up to Wingleadership over the turns, and they lead a mostly uneventful life until their transfer to Telgar Weyr.
