Character Info:
Name: Jeren
Age: 20 turns, born 1033,impressed in 1049 at 16
Gender: Male
Rank: wingrider
Family:
Makar, a Master Beastcrafter, currently assigned to Telgar Weyr (Father)
Lorna, assits Makar though not a ranked by Beastcrafter Hall (Mother)
Durance, older than Jeren by seven years, runaway
(older brother)
Ethal, (deceased)
(older sister)
Appearance:
J'ren tends to be taller than everyone around him, standing at 6'6" without his boots. Coupled with his broad shoulders and large frame he at first appears very unapproachable. His boyish face and soft green eyes tell most people he is not as scary as at first apperence. He keeps his brown hair short and his face a very neutral expression.
To see him in his riding leathers you'd think he has no time for anything else; they are always clean and mended. But his favorite clothing is loose and comfortable, earthy browns, grays, and greens. He has has a few nicer clothes for Gathers.
He is alittle overweight, though he carries it well on his large frame. Before becoming a dragon rider he would attend gathers and enter the wrestling contests. The fact that he does not appear to be very muscular was the downfall of many opponents. Years of working for his father give him great strength. Since becoming a rider he has slimmed down some, showing more defenition in his muscle.
Personality:
His wingmates would tell you he is very loyal and trustworthy. Hardworking, diligent. There are some in Telgar who claim he never talks. He prefers to sit and listen, not to gossip like many others do, but to think. He is the strong silent type. Just as he doesn't share gossip he doesn't talk much about his personal life.
Much as he prefers to listen and be observant that to be outspoken, others have watched to learn more about the young dragon rider. He is partial to klah in the morning, the stronger the better. There isn't much known that he won't eat, but he definatly prefers the simple things.
His loyalty is without question, he tends to agree with most of the weyr polotics, but he is clearly against the mistreatment of "lesser people". In this you will find he has a short temper. He once saw one of the youngmen trip a kitchen drudge and after grabbing him and hanging him by his belt from one of the storeroom hooks, he helped the drudge pickup her tray.
Someone who makes every effort to treat people as equals and does not discrimenate against class, and looks rather imposing when he stoops to go into some of the lower doorways, would seem fearless. In truth his greatest fear is failure. He will work that much harder than everyone else just to be sure that he does not fail.
History:
There wasn't much to be said for his life before coming to the Weyr. His father was a Beastcrafter, as was his Grandfather, and so many turns back it could not be known for sure. At age three his father moved the family to Telgar to take on the assignment of tending the beasts that are kept on the dragon feeding grounds and all the other beasts there.
It about six turns after that tragedy tore the family when the middle child, Ethal, died from an unknown disease. Shortly after the oldest son became angry with his parents and overcome with his own grief, left the Weyr in the dead of night.
The turns that followd are best remembered as difficult. Jeren took up the work that his older siblings had done helping his father. But he was able to make friends with a few of the weyrborn and the dragonriders as well. It was no suprise that one of them choose him as a candidate.
On the day of the hatching he stood on the sands and thought for sure that the others gathered there were better suited to be riders that he was. H'd never even learned to handle a runner beast, how could he manage a dragon? And when the last egg began to rock and make tapping noises and finaly a bronze , larger than the others of the clutch, tumbled out of the shell, he knew, somehow, that this one was ment for him. The dragon seemed to agree because the first thing he did was approach Jeren and ask 'You are my rider, I am Gliath, you have food?'
Since becoming a bronze rider things in life seemed to have improved. He has learned a great deal from his other wingmates. He has gotten in better shape. He still helps his father in his free time, but his dragon is always first prioriety. There is some great satisfaction in watching Gliath chomp down one of the beasts that J'ren had spent his early years tending to, and loathed.
