These events take place after the discovery of AIVAS, the aversion of the red star, and the sudden of AIVAS and the technology it had briefly offered.
Without thread, the Weyrs were left without purpose. Slowly, dragon numbers began to decline. Soon, there were only enough to populate a few of the many Weyrs - once again, Benden and Fort were the only two left 'active'. Eventually, the Weyrs no longer even mined for firestone. So when a rogue comet* struck the north of Pern, the Weyrs were hit hard. Not only did the comet obliterate large areas of the North, but it affected the orbit of the Red Star, drawing it closer once again.
The Red Star became held in Pern's orbit, and thread started to fall. With Benden Weyr too badly damaged in the comet's aftermath, the remaining Benden riders decided to migrate South. There, where the land was protected by the grub species from being too badly damaged, they would have time to set up. There was nothing they could do to save most of the North.
It was then that Babylon Weyr was founded, around the area where Cove Hold had once prospered. Meanwhile, the dragonriders of Fort Hold moved to High Reaches Weyr, an area currently less vulnerable to thread.
Soon, one of the few remaining queens, gold Icaranth, was due to clutch at the newly founded Babylon. However, at the hatching, the riders noticed the appearance of unusual colours. After contacting High Reaches Weyr, they learned the same phenomenon was happening there.
It was slightly later on that the 'Unacceptables' began to appear. Threadfall was erratic, and Weyr life was still unstable. Many, in anger and fear, fought amongst themselves. The 'Unacceptables' were thus made into a public enemy in order to unify the volatile Weyrfolk.
Approximately 104 years on, things settled down. The so-called 'new dragons' were long recognised as proper established colours. Prejudice against the 'Unacceptable' colours was by then commonplace, and a way of life. Babylon and High Reaches Weyr have fallen out. Both have adopted isolationist policies, and contact between them is rare. Babylon Weyr has prospered. Life is rich and decadent, food is bountiful, and thread has adopted a regular fall. Dragon numbers are still low, but are slowly on the increase.
Two years later. Present day.
Royal Black queen Sareth and her rider, the Junior Weyrwoman Leane, are killed fighting thread over the sea by themselves. The tragic accident also resulted in the death of M'nar, the Weyrleader, as he tried to save her. The tragedy was, Sareth's first clutch was still maturing on the sands. The unruly pair's desire to fight thread was too strong, and the eggs were left unattended while Leane and Sareth went on their reckless thread-fighting spree.
Jessica, the Weyrwoman of the past 5 years, is left as the sole leader of the Weyr. Her dragon, Gold Kycheth, (and actually the mother of Royal Black Sareth) takes over the looking after of Sareth's clutch. There are 30 eggs, though it is likely many will not hatch due to the neglect they suffered.
The future of the Weyr is uncertain.
