Appearance:
Dark hair slightly longer than most Dragonriders. It’s so dark it appears black, though it has none of the blue/black shine expected in true black hair. His skin is naturally dark, like klah, and the few small scars he’s managed to collect show up as a very pink contrast. His hands are narrow and long, though very strong. Though one would not expect a weaver to have calluses on their hands, they do develop, and make his large hand a manly hand to shake. Unlike some people, his hands don’t sweat often, so he’s a nice person to hold hands with- not only that, but his hands are expertly groomed, as would any Weaver.
He’s not tall, being of a rather average height(5’9), which is both a blessing and a curse. He’s not heavy muscled, though, as a mesomorph, he naturally has muscles(and hauling heavy hide and bales of cloth for his female counterparts has kept them firm). He’s not built for running at all, and tends to move at a brisk walk when going places. His calves are powerful from using manual sewing machines, and looms, as are his thighs. Were his legs not slightly longer than they should be, he’d look squat and dowdy.
He spends whatever time he can outside in the brightest light he can find, but that doesn’t combat all of the time he’s spend indoors trying to complete complex embroidery- his eyes have the wrinkles of a squinter, which is sad as he has rather nice eyes. They’re a honey brown, with lighter brown speckles, and usually show the signs of a good-humored man.
His nose is rounded at the end, and is just the right size for his rather oval face. His chin isn’t very strong, and detracts from his overall facial attractiveness. His cheekbones are high and fine, and his skin is a little pinker on the cheeks. His ears are another of his finest attributes, being a good size and well shaped- if he were a girl, he’d have them pierced to draw attention to them. As it is, he’s no lady, and has no wishes to be, so his ears remain unadorned. His eyebrows are thick, like the rest of his hair, and his one allowance to vanity is plucking them, especially in the gap between each eyebrow.
His clothes are always freshly washed, mended, and unstained. This isn’t simple vanity- but the reality of knowing that people don’t buy clothing from a rumpled Weaver. While what he’s wearing tends to change depending on who he’s soliciting, or even if he’s not looking for work at all, it’s always the finest a Journeyman can afford while saving up his marks. He prefers any color to brown and black, as he feels that most shades don’t work to well on his skin tone. His shoes are always made for comfort, not style.
Personality:
Orlin, well, he has his faults. He’s a tad self centered, has a bad habit of acting like he’s more important than he actually is. He’s also exceedingly talented at his Craft. His bad habits are connected to the things he does well- after all, you can’t be as egotistical and not get smacked around- unless you were really as good as you say you are.
He’s used to being praised and coddled, and the harsh realities that people are going to yell at you, dislike your, or treat you terribly, well, it’s not something he’s used too.
He likes people in general, but has little patience for drama queens(other than himself), and loves to tell big, bouncy stories. He’s not much for spreading gossip, much preferring to be the one people are spreading gossip of- but if needed, he can use a rumor to his advantage like any other.
The Weaver is not much of the opinion girls are as good as men at everything. Just as women shouldn’t become Smiths, women aren’t suited for Dragonriding. They simply don’t have enough body strength nor the reaction time of men- and they simply aren’t hardened enough to deal with pain a dragonman will have to face when fighting Thread. Sure, they can produce beautiful cloth, or be good nurses, or even help with beasts and farms, but they shouldn’t be entrusted to fight- it’s against woman’s nature(and his own, but that has nothing to do with it).
A man who changes friends easily, he’s not really very loyal. He likes everyone, but nothing stops him from sharing a good piece of information, unless, that is, if he’s been flattered and pushed into keeping it.
History:
Born into a beastcrafting family, it was evident early on that he would not follow his fathers footsteps. That was not a problem, as several of his older brothers had done the same. He showed a distinct desire to become a Weaver, and so, at around nine, he left his family to be apprenticed.
He was better than most other children, and learned quickly. Passion was always foremost in his works, and everything from a simple scarf to a complex dress was given the same amount of attention and detail as was in his heart to give. He often became the favorite of a master or journeyman for this, and while some chose this as a reason to avoid him and make fun of him, Orlin never lacked for companionship. He was popular with the ladies for his love of gossip and way with words. It was often joked that he should have become a Harper.
He rose quickly, learning more complex patterns and stitches, and because of how early he learned them, he had more time to master them, and twist them to suit his own style. His array of works is much finer than other students his own age, and while he wasn’t allowed to walk the tables any sooner than others, he’s much better at it than many of his age group. A way of knowing this was shown in his appointment. While most weavers aren’t actually journeying around, they are usually assigned to a place like Keroon or Ruatha, or even Boll or Fort. Each of which produces there own type of fiber, in a raw sense. Journeymen usually end up working with the raw before being allowed into a major Hold, or Weyr.
Orlin was sent directly to the Weyr. He has yet to be asked to make the Weyrwoman a gown, but he is sure it will happen soon. Telgar Weyr doesn’t have that many Journeymen, and most of it’s Masters are busy dealing with teaching Weyrbrats(and trying to seduce them into the Craft), so Orlin is an obvious choice.
Though he has yet to make anything major, the man has a new respect for dragonriders. He’s been asked by multiple riders about how to make stitching stronger on their harness, and realizes how much work it is- and how much of it they do themselves.
The Weyr is a slightly bigger place than the man is used too, and he is still working on becoming a big sensation. At this point, he’s not charging as much so that he can get his work showcased.
If your poor blue, green, or brown rider wants some really nice work done cheap, they might want to hit him now. And those that bring their own fabrics will get it done even cheaper- and faster as well.
If you wait too long, getting a suit from Orlin may not be possible on a budget.
