A good sevenday after the Hatching, an egg heavy Lyranth flew to the Hatching Sands. She had snuck down there in the early predawn hours, while he rider slept unawares. The Gold was doing fine for a good time. When her rider came down to the Sands, there was no concern for Lyranth, the dragon was doing fine. She had done this so many times, things would go as they always had.
She began straining, not a candlemark after her rider had come down. They sent for the dragonhealers but there was nothing to be done. The Gold was not going to be able to pass this egg. Both dragonet and dragon were not going to survive. With what was left of her the Queen tried, in vain to get the egg out of her body. It was a sad misfortune that this should happen to a Queen well in her prime.
A'stin and Rodreth had come to the Sands as quickly as they could. The Weyrleader watched in horror, unable to do anything. Lyranth died, taking herself Between when she knew her heart would stop. He was going to stop Shaye, in fact he was running to stop her but he was too late. The Weyrwoman would not live without her dragon and had killed herself. Suicide among dragonless was common but not for one moment had A'stin been prepared for this.
Rodreth led the other dragon's of the Weyr in their keening for the loss of one of their own. The Queen was gone and her rider with her.
The clutch on the sands numbered only seven, though they had suspected the large egg that would not leave Lyranth may have been another Gold, they could not prove it. So these seven must be cared for and the only Gold old enough at Igen was Saharth.
A'stin knew what he had to do, though he took a good while to do it. He was holding Shaye, lifeless in his arms, though he would not let himself cry. He had loved her though she had never even hinted at a reciprocal love for him. He wondered now if she had evre cared for him. Perhaps she had but was afraid he would use such love against her. It did no good to be so afraid of being vulnerable, that you gave up on feeling such emotions.
The Weyrleader, decided he would take her between where her dragon had gone. He couldn't leave her here. It took only a moment but he knew better than to let himself get dragged down by the emotions right now. He was still in a little shock, which helped matters.
Saharth, you and yours are needed at the Hatching Sands.Rodreth spoke with a sadness in his mind voice that could only reflect what he and his rider were feeling. These seven eggs were a clutch born of sorrow.
((OOC: No one need reply to this, its just to inform people of what has happened. A'stin will remain Weyrleader until Jenafa's next flight and Saharth will be taking care of the eggs.)
