Eyes of a startling blue searched the hallways fiercely, the pale skinned dark haired girl they belonged to moving with a swiftness that would have frightened anyone in her path. She bore a frightening resemblance to her father some times, and this was one of those mornings. She was on a mission and nothing would halt her.
Curls bounced as she rounded the corner, and strode into the infirmary. It was a quiet morning, the weyrlings were scheduled to be bathing their dragons at this point in the day. She searched the infirmary intently, sping the figure she sought.
“Good Day Daevon!” her features were determined.

Daevon came out, drying his freshly washed hands. There were a couple of stains on his shirt, but none of them were blood. "Nerine. How can I help you?"
The Dragon Healer had been working on a batch of ointment for when R'net next showed up to report on the progress of those who had left. Because Ortath was still technically his patient, and he would still need the special ointment to keep his skin healthy, Daevon knew a bit - though no where near all of it - what was going on. Just enough to know to have a year's supply of ointment ready when R'net would report in.
"How can I help you? Someone in trouble?" Probably not a dragon rider, since he would know, but the determined set to her approach suggested to him that there was an issue that needed attending to.

Nerine appraised the man with a wide grin, looking frightfully at that moment like her father. “No one in trouble, but there is a question I have to ask.”
There it was again, that starry eyed look that she was so unaware of. Her face glowed with the possibilities attached to what she had to ask.
“I know you said you would sponsor me to the Hold, but would you consider taking me on as your apprentice?”
Her glance was imploring, dark curls half pinned back from her pale face, one could clearly count her freckles in that moment. It seemed all the hope the girl could muster lay in the answer to her question.

"Oh, Nerine." His voice was one of a man who felt both honored and conflicted. "I can't." He raised a hand, "Let me explain. Come. Sit." He was inviting the young woman to sit a lot of late.
He guided her over to a table, pulled a chair out for her, and then took a seat himself in a different chair. "That's not how it works, Nerine. I can take you on as an assistant. And I can send a recommendation to the Hall that you be accepted as an apprentice. But there are classes and things that you need to take at the Hall."
"There is the possibility that you'd be assigned to a Master in the field. But I don't have that kind of pull, Nerine." He sighed, "I know that wasn't the answer you wanted. I'm sorry."

She could tell by the tone in his voice when he used her name that it wouldn’t be that easy. Then again she asked herself if she had expected it to be. The answer was a resounding no. She sat down obediently remaining very quiet as he spoke, a solemn determination in her eyes. She listened intently absorbing every word.
“I did not expect it to be easy Daevon, I have heard often from Eisu how hard she had to work to achieve the position she has currently.” Her words were soft, yet edged with resolution.
“Every apprentice has to start somewhere, I did not come in here today expecting a resounding yes. If It means working as an assistant first and eventually leaving Telgar. . . Then so be it.” She finished finaly.
“I know I can do what it takes, In order to be apprenticed you have to pass the qualifiers and the leaders of the hall correct? Where better to begin that study than right here in Telgar under the watchful eye of a Master? There will be tests and other obsticales but I am unafraid of study.” She paused for breath. Suddenly aware of how much she really had thought about this.
“I can do this, I just need a place to start.” Her voice was firm.

Her response made the old man smile. "That I can give you, Nerine. Work as my assistant for a few months, and I'll teach you what you need to know to get in. Keep in mind that you're a little bit older than most new apprentices are. However, if you work hard, I really do not think that age will be a problem at all. When we feel that you're ready, I'll write the recommendation, and we'll see what happens."
Life was not fair. Daevon knew that. He was not a woman. So he could not fully understand the difficulties that she would face as a woman. Though he did know that there would be plenty of them.
"I'll do everything I can to help you get started, Nerine." He smiled to her. "I hope that its enough."

Nerine inspected every word carefully, a wild grin spreading as Daevon spoke. So what if she was older? She would have to work that much harder here to catch up, and hard work was something she could take to easily. Right now it didn’t matter to her that she was a girl, nor that she was dragon less, she had a goal. She beamed at his final words her reply ready from the moment she had risen from bed this morning. She pulled on the apron she left hanging in the infirmary.
“Then where do we begin?” [end?]
