Amneris had been told that the Weyrlingmaster arranged a Search Drill for those interested in the bowl. The people they would be looking at were the children from the Creche. Not all the kids of course. They didn't need to search the babies and certainly not the kids approaching their teens. The children ranged in age from four to nine. She wondered how the Creche had managed to get all the children out at the same time.
Labeth stood next to Amneris, not as nervous as her rider. If she wasn't good at this, she was sure to excell at something else. Amneris thought of it as a good way to get away from the Weyr from time to time. Besides she liked interacting with people. There was a moment or two that she thought no one else was coming, of course she was there super early.
"I hope Jeyna comes..." She said to Labeth though the dragon didn't seem to care. Greens were a bit self centered if you asked Neris. Not that she wasn't constantly thinking about herself in one way, shape or form most of the time.
---------
The Creche was an absolute mess. There were kids running this way and that. Vittor was completely annoyed. They were going to the Bowl to meet DRAGONS! Didn't the rest of those dimglows understand what that meant? At least he had Altor with him. The boy reached for his brother's hand when the Nannies announced for everyone to have a buddy for the walk.
"I do hope we get to touch them. They look so pretty. The blue and green ones have the most colorful hides. Do you think we'll get to ask questions?" He whispered to Altor, not wanting to get in trouble. The boy also wondered if they had any friends going. Reiko and Elirian in particular. Though it would be nice to see Anistora again. She did tell great stories.
-----------
Relina was sitting on a desk as a nanny applied the bandage to her right knee. She had scraped it on the rug. Well more like slid into the rug which rubbed her skin raw. "So, I was on the back side of the room when he said, first one to the rug wins. I won." She finished her story, a smile on her face. Reli wasn't a baby about getting injured. In fact she was getting fidgety with all this attention.
"Can I still go? PLEASE?" The girl shot a look of pure innocence up at the nanny, who obviously knew what Relina was about. She told her to sit still another moment and she would tell her what was going to happen with her. "One, you will not tease your brother again today, two, no running inside if you insist on playing rough, three you also will not play in the dirt when we go outside.... your mother expressly told us that you were not to get that dress dirty." Relina rolled her eyes at the last part.
With the wit a seven turn old might posses she kept her mouth shut. Her dress was going to get dirty, they were going to the Bowl and it was always dusty there. However, she wasn't going to pass up the chance to see dragons up close. Not all Weyrbrats knew their fathers or knew anyone well enough who had a dragon that they could be in touching distance.
"I will do as you say so long as I can go." Relina answered. The nanny knew she would agree to nearly anything just to go with other kids. " Pair up with someone other than your brother please..." She really thought that girl would be the death of her. Relina smiled and leapt off the desk. "Of course, who'd want to stand in line with that dimglow." With that she winked at the nanny and skipped off to find someone else to talk to.

Jeyna had been pleased when M'ren had accepted her offer to help with teaching the Weyrling pairs about Searchriding, though she knew that for this exercise - thankfully! - she had not been the only Searchrider invited to attend and help out. She had agreed to mentor Amneris specifically - actually rather she had had M'ren agree that she would mentor Amneris specifically - as well as any other Weyrlings who were particularly interested in Searchriding to a reasonable, though undefined, limit. She showed up at the weyrbowl, smiling and in a very pleasant mood. This would be a good exercise, and there should be no real pressure on any of the children, as they would tend to be allowed to stand, at least the boys would, regardless of what was said today. In fact, this was the lowest possible pressure experience of Searching that anyone could really have. Ragoth landed beside his Rider about the same time she reached the Sands. This will be a good day! Jeyna smiled, "Yes, it will be. Stay here while I go to say hi. If you come with me, they might think that I'm in charge and we'll have to do some kind of big speech or something." Ragoth's eyes whirled with amusement as he nodded, And you hate speeches."Yep." Jeyna grinned and then headed off in the direction of the weyrlings, and one in particular. "Heylas 'Neris. I'm glad you chose to come." Not that she had any doubts about that, really. She gave her a quick hug. "This'll be fun. I think you'll enjoy it. Though this is only a taste of Searchriding." Greetings, Labeth. You are looking well and growing beautifully.*** Altor grinned as his brother grabbed his hand. He was so excited that he was not babbling or asking a series of questions, though like his brother, a question did burn within him - would they get to touch the dragons?! He was positively bouncing beside his not-twin. "I do too! Surely they will! I mean, it would be mean to bring us out here to look at them if we're not even allowed to touch them." He also agreed with Vittor's choice in color. Bronze and Golds were pretty, but the blues and greens were like jewels in the jewelry they saw at the feast and dancing after the hatching. "One day, we'll get to ride our own dragons!! But I want to be able to touch some now! I wonder if they'll speak to us?!"

Elirian had stayed with his mother ever since R'net had come to them. Even though Elisha was too busy for mothering, she knew it would be the last days she would see her little boy his size. The sentimental old fool inside of her was coming out, or maybe that was just the increase in hormones. Being three months pregnant was taking a toll, she had forgotten what it was like. Still, even when some one told her to make Elirian go back to his foster mother, she snapped at them. SHE was the Weyrwoman, the senior queen rider, and if SHE wanted to be selfish, well by Faranth she would be! Thus, Elirian shadowed his mother every where and had little time for his friends. The little boy knew he was going, though he was not to mumble a word of it to anyone- also another reason why Elisha chose to keep her son at her side at all times. No need for a chatty little boy to get the word out before the riders were notified and the candidates searched.
Elisha sent Elirian to be searched with the rest of the children-despite that R'net already told her he had a strong reading. Maybe she was hoping he wouldn't get picked, that he was going to be rejected this time. Oh, the queenrider wanted her boy to Impress, but she also was hesitant to let him go. She knew she'd have to deal with letting him go as a baby, but he was still at the Weyr. He would leave one day and return the next as a grown boy! What a sentimental old fool she was becoming!
Elirian walked by Vittor and Altor knowing he had a secret that they were not privy to. Well that was just too much. But he was sworn to silence, and he didn't want to break a promise, especially to Mommy. So he gave the boys a half smile, "Hello, Altor, Vittor."

R'net hoped no one took amiss his presence at the mock Search. Or noticed that he was writing the names down of all the children who received the strongest response from the dragon. He could see his son, chattering away at some crèche worker, and felt himself smile, before he turned his attention back to what it was suppose to be on. The blue Searchdragon, and the Weyrlings he was training were all ready, and R'net supposed it was up to him to explain to the Weyrbrats what was going on. Search riders rarely ever had to say anything more than "We come on Search", before getting everything set up for them.
Moving into the lime light, R'net raised his voice. "I know all of you knows what a Search is. We're having one, right now, so that the Weyrlings learn about Searching. Don't worry about the results of this Search- every member of this Weyr is allowed to Stand for our clutches." R'net smiled reassuringly. "Any questions?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Reiko bragged to the Crèche worker that it was his father who'd organized this Search, but the young woman didn't seem all that interested. "Go find your friends." She told him seriously. "I need to keep an eye on people, and you are making that hard." Pouting slightly, the redhead boy trotted off, feeling wounded. It was solved with a simple touch of the cord that Mari's ring hung on. She cared, even though she was Between. Cheered up greatly, Reiko spotted Elirian, Vittor and Altor.
"Hey, Eliri." Reiko was breathing a little bit hard, having been moving quickly over to find them. "Where have you been?"
Amneris was watching as the kids were coming out into the Weyrbowl. There were a fair number of them though not nearly as many as one would think a Weyr of this size would hold. In fact it was sort of a bitter sweet feeling to see the number of children so low.
Then she caught a glimpse of Jeyna and smiled. She half expected the woman to ignore her because of the setting but Jeyna suprised her and gave her a quick hug. "I wouldn't miss it. Hopefully we'll be able to see who in the Weyrling class would be good for Searching and we'll make some of the kids fairly excited." From what she knew, these Weyrbrats all seemed to want to be dragonriders someday. "I'm sure real Searchriding is much more complicated..."
The green dragon was flattered by the attention of Ragoth. Much like the other greens she was rather vain. She thought of what to say in return though it took her a moment. Thank you Ragoth. You look well today too. The green would keep any thought of him being a handsome and strong blue out of her comments. He wasn't a Weyrling dragon she could so shamelessly flirt with.
------
Vittor hoped the same. "I'm sure they'll let us get close. I'm very sure.." He began to walk as they were directed to go outside. "I don't remember them ever searching like this before. Should be fun!" He said as he heard Elirian approach. "Hello Elirian. Aren't you excited?" The curly haired boy asked.
He watched Reiko appraoch as well. Though he seemed to want to talk to Elirian. Reiko was a full two turns younger than him, so Vittor wasn't at all upset b not being greeted. In fact he just went back to paying attention to his "not" twin.
"Its also much more enjoyable, which is really what I was referring to. Getting to go new places, getting to see more of Telgar, though obviously we have to be careful not to be going into someone else's territory." She chuckled, that could cause problems, though usually the incidents did not get too out of control. "Its nice to be able to get out of the Weyr and be free." Jeyna looked over the gathered children, "I just hope we don't break any hearts. I like the opportunity to teach and find out who all will make good searchriders, but this may devestate some of these children." Thank you, dear one. From you, that is a high compliment. There was no sense of sarcasm or patronizing in his mind voice, but just a truthful comment. And then Ragoth, pulled from just the one Green and spoke to her and the others who were gathered, Just relax. Don't force anything. It may feel just being attracted to a certain child. Go with it if you feel that way.*** Altor ignored the fact that Reiko ignored Vittor and himself. "Hey Elirian, Reiko! Isn't this exciting?" He grinned big as he walked with his brother where the kids were all being herded. "I don't know why they decided to do this, but its sooooo wonderful." He squeezed his brother's hand slightly, though when they got to where R'net was directing them, he positively bounced in place, eyes glued on the pretty Dragons.
Elirian smiled a little, it was good that his friends all greeted him so warmly. He shrugged and looked to Reiko, "I've been with Mommy." Of course Elisha had spoiled her boy, but he wasn't going to say that. Anyway, he couldn't talk about it.
He grinned, "Excited? Yes! Dragons are very good. Beautiful. I like Adeloth a lot." Of course he had liked Deluth a lot too, before the bronze was shipped off to Ista.
Anistora put her brush down and turned her head a little to the right, then to the left looking to be sure it was as pretty as she could make it without her mother as she looked into the reflective glass in her father’s weyr. Hands showed up in the mirror, picking up her hair and pulling it back behind her shoulders gently. Smiling, Anistora turned around quickly and hugged her bronze-riding father.
“Will you come with me to the search father? Please, oh please? Its not a real search, but for the children. The crèche lady’s said I could come too. I want you to take me. Please father?” While Anistora spent much of her time with her much quieter father lately, she asked in hopes to get him out of his weyr for something besides drills. She couldn’t help but think he could use the fresh air.
Lan’ae looked at his daughter and gave her a small smile. “A search for the children? Why would they search children who are not old enough to stand?”
Anistora paused a moment to think. It was strange and this was the first time she’d ever heard of it within her nine full turns, but none the less she found an idea of why. “Maybe it’s M’ren’s idea! Don’t the weyrling’s want to learn to search for candidates? Maybe they will be there.” At least the idea sounded like something her father might have thought up if he had kept his weyrlingmaster position after the illness struck.
“I suppose your right, Anistora.” Placing his hands on her shoulders, he leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Just remember, even if you are searched you still have many turns before your old enough to stand.” Patting his daughter’s shoulder, he offered his hand. If she wanted to stand in a children’s search, then he would let her. It wasn’t like she could stand before a queen at her age anyways.
Taking his hand happily, Anistora lead her father down from the weyr they shared as quickly as she could to the crowd of children and riders below in the bowl.
Amneris noted that the kids were now all outside. Not that the noise the children made wasn't enough to announce their presence. They all seemed a little loud and Neris wondered how Labeth would react to a bunch of children making a lot of noise. Just as she thought that the children were quieted.
Labeth listened to Ragoth and then went on to look over the children. Such peculiar little humans. Without a second thought, she followed the blue's advice. There were many children and though Amneris seemed concerned about hurting their feelings Labeth was not.
The young green felt drawn especially to a young girl who had come in with a man just a moment before. Labeth, not knowing who she should say something to, told Ragoth. I like her. The green meant Anistora but could only indicate her by showing Ragoth. Then she told Amneris. There's a little girl right there that I like. I told Ragoth.
This was fun! The green thought though it seemed it was stressful to the children. She looked at another child, this time a boy. These younglings were younger mentally than Labeth could comprehend. They weren't like Candidates...but still there were a few who already began to interest her. She wanted to get closer...Neris can we go closer. Theres a little boy...Amneris had no idea so she asked Jeyna, "Are we permitted to get closer?"
-----
Vittor watched intently. "Oh he's soooo pretty!" He nudged Altor and pointed at Ragoth. "Look at that color!" The boy was so excited he couldn't contain it. Not that it much mattered that he was being loud, all the brats were. It was because of their excitement. The dragons, however, were looking a bit uneasy about all the noise. The children were quieted down after a moment with a promise that if they were quiet the dragons might come closer.
CLOSER! Vittor was clasping his brother's hand harder now than he intended to. If he could touch the pretty blue one...
---
Relina was not only impressed by the dragons but that there were so many people out in the Bowl. She knew there to be less children than before the illnesses and still there seemed to be a good number of other kids. She was glad that her brother and her were both out there today. She had found herself no partner when they were told to buddy up. She didn't want nor need a buddy.
There was a little a green dragon looking over a couple of people, you could tell because she would focus on one person at a time. She wondered if that was one of the Weyrling dragons. The green had to be nearly full grown from the size of her. Relina smiled, she didn't really expect to be Searched but she didn't deny that it would be kind of fun...especially if Telon didn't get Searched. If he got searched and she didn't that would almost be a fate worse than death.
With all the commotion and excitement, Telon was definitely in his element. He usually found uproars created by his own handiwork more enjoyable, but dragons focusing solely on the children would do! Sure, he'd seen dragons every day of his life and he had a fair share of dragonriders in his background, but it wasn't every day that the great beasts stopped to interact with the children of the Weyr.
Telon was literally bouncing up in down beside the partner he had chosen when the nannies told the weyrbrats to partner up. Reli had been off getting her banged up knee taken care of, so he was stuck with a younger, chubbier lad as a partner. Telon refused to hold the other boy's hand as that would have restricted his ability to fidget around, but he did give the other lad a good natured poke and grin when the weyrling green started to focus in on others.
As the nannies told the children that they would need to settle down before the dragons could get closer, Telon got as still as anyone had ever seen him. True, he still bounced up and down on his toes, but that was quite mild for the active lad. He viewed this as another challenge, something he had to succeed at. Imagine the horror if Relina was picked and he was not!
Jeyna watched, being willing, both she and Ragoth, to assist any of the weyrlings who needed or wanted their help, though she noticed that not many had shown up. Well, she was sure that there would come a time when more would realize that there was an advantage in being a Searchrider. Of course, most were more concerned with how they would fight Thread - important, but not the only task dragons and riders were needed for. Ragoth immediately turned his attention to the young woman which Labeth expressed interest in. Very good, Labeth. She would make a good Rider. He then shared that information with Jeyna who frowned ever so slightly, though kept her thoughts between herself and her dragon, And she's female, so unless there's a Gold egg, it does not matter how strong a potential she shows. Mine. Not now. Labeth is doing well."Your Labeth was right in noticing the girl. She is strong. And yes, if there are any that you are interested in, you may go closer. Just be careful, even here at the Weyr, children are absolutely enamored with dragons. The nannies will work to make sure that they don't get underfoot, but have Labeth watch out as well. And it is up to you and your Labeth if you allow any of the children to touch her." She grinned, Amneris and Labeth both seemed to be taking to this like fish to water. *** Altor's eyes had been focused on the smaller, not quite - though not far from it - adult. "I like the Green, she's pretty." He half whispered to his brother since the nannies had quieted them down, and the last thing he wanted to do was to keep the dragons from getting closer. He did tear his eyes from Labeth to the Blue which his brother pointed out. "Oh, he's pretty too." Though Altor's eyes went back to the pretty green. He thought the blue was almost as pretty, but the green had him absolutely entranced. "Look at their eyes, so very pretty!" *** Unfortunately for Vittor, Ragoth was not approaching closer, nor did he plan to for the time being. However, he and Jeyna had already agreed that if the children behaved, he would allow them to touch him after this was over. However, he was only here to help and Greens or Blues, or even Browns if there were any interested, who wanted to discover if Searching was for them, so for now, he stayed back.
K'dyn was still somewhat concerned about this little trip he'd be taking. He had been told last night, that he would be second in command of this mission. While that was a good thing rank wise, it wasn't the most wonderful thing that could happen to him. His job today? Well he was going to be pulling the children aside that the dragons searched and they would be invited to a little meeting with R'net and himself. Oh Faranth he knew nothing about children!
Ortath made sure to ask the Search dragons who was being picked. From what he had so far there was a young girl, standing with her father. K'dyn saw them and instantly recognized Lan'ae. How could he do this to him? That girl was the only person left in his family. K'dyn swallowed hard, his job, for lack of a better word, sucked.
"Excuse me young lady, but you've been Searched. As part of the mock Search, the searched children will be meeting with us and the dragons afterward. Of course your father is invited to attend as well." K'dyn said, acting as if this was a perfectly normal routine, rather than what it was. He hoped Lan'ae and his daughter didn't dwell too much on what this could mean.
----
Amneris smiled, she knew Labeth would be fine at this. The green took Ragoth's compliment to heart. She wanted to get closer, not because she couldn't tell the boy would be a good rider but because there were other boys right next to him and she couldn't tell if all four of them would be good or if it was just because he was influencing how she percieved the others.
As if on que, Labeth walked directly towards Altor. The green was out of touching distance but only by a few feet. Shhe looked the small blonde over and then the curly haired blonde next to him. This was tricky. How could one tell if they were both strong? Neris, can we make the little ones move?Why not? Amneris walked over to the four boys bunched together. "Hi. I'm Amneris and this is Labeth." She smiled.
"Labeth would like you four to step forward. Then you need to walk a few steps from eachother." The four she indicated were Altor, Vittor, Elirian and Reiko.
-------
OH WOW! Vittor thought to himself as the little green walked towards them. "She is pretty and she's coming towards us." He whispered back completely unaware that the dragon was looking at his brother. He could only hope the green would come closer. To his amazement the curly haired boy watched the green come closer and closer before standing feet in front of him and his brother.
He nudged Altor and stood open mouthed looking up at the green. They were a lot bigger up close. Then a tall blonde girl came over and introduced the green as Labeth. Such a pretty name. He'd do anything for the dragon even move as he was indicated to, away from his not twin.
Anistora watched the dragons like many of the other children, but she also took glances at the riders trying to make out who they were looking at, but the mass of children was just a little too large for her to tell. It was quite obvious, however, that two of the riders were female and no queen dragon was present.
Squeezing her fathers hand, she looked up. “Father, if women can ride blues and greens why are we only allowed to stand for a gold?”
Looking down at his daughter, Lan’ae gave her a weak smile. “Because it is dangerous to ride blues and greens, they are fighting dragons. You know that Anistora.”
“But aren’t the golds just as dangerous when you stand for them? Didn’t pretty Sheluth hurt some of the girls standing for her?”
Lan’ae could not deny the argument his young daughter was putting up, but thankfully he didn’t have to as the brownrider present walked up to them and spoke to Anistora, distracting her from the current conversation.
Hearing that she had been searched, Anistora’s face lit up and she smiled a smile that Lan’ae could easily tell was the biggest since her mother and brother had passed. He was glad this mock search brightened her spirits. Giving the K’ydn (he had recognized the man as well) a nod, he put his hand on his daughters shoulder. More than likely he would be telling the young children to look forward to standing in the future, but to also remind them that it would not be with this next hatching.
“Where do we meet at? Was I really the first one searched?” Anistora asked, her eyes sparkling.
Ragoth watched with approval. Labeth is doing well, Mine. She would be good to Search with. Jeyna grinned slightly at Ragoth's mental comment as she watched Amneris with the kids. It would be good to go Searchriding with them, and the Blue Rider was definitely glad that she would, indeed, be mentoring the Green Rider now that Labeth had proven herself. *** Altor's eyes grew the size of saucers as the pretty Green came right to him. He nodded at his brother's words, but her eyes and her attention were completely locked on the pretty dragon. "So pretty." Unfortunately, his complete and total attention on the Green meant that he did not hear her rider, at least not at first, as he was completely absorbed in looking up at the dragon. It was only when he felt his brother nudge him, and then move away from him that he blinked and looked away from the Green momentarily. Upon looking at his not-twin he saw that Vittor had stepped forward and away from him, and his mind registered, Amneris' earlier request. "Sorry." He mumbled as he then followed her directions and stepped forward, then made sure that he was a few steps from Vittor - easy since Vittor had already obeyed the instructions - and Reiko and Elirian.
The brownrider kept his poker face on. No point giving anything away. They'd both know what was going on soon enough. K'dyn commented to the girl, " She did indeed though you must remember that there are more greens and blues than Golds and women are needed now more than ever to not go Between. You see women are the only ones who can create life and as such very special. My own sister did stand for the Gold though, and she did impress to Sheluth..." The question became was it worth the risk?
"As for were you first, yes and first meet us where R'net is standing, the man taking down the names of those Searched." K'dyn pointed in the direction of the leader of this whole mission.
-------------
So strange. What is strange?That all four of them should be so close together and all four them be so promising.You want to choose all four?I'm very drawn to them each though that little blonde one seems more appealing to me as a green. He just reminds me of you a bit. Well he can't be more than six and those two look even younger. That one with the curls looks the exact age we are looking for. If you are certain I will tell them. I am.
Amneris grinned, "Alright, she has decided that the four of you should ride dragons and she is curious about how all four of you should be together and all be Searchable. Now, I just need your names to relay back to the leader. Then A brownrider will be coming to take you to a special meeting just for the kids who get searched."
The green looked over each of them once more than moved on to another boy. This one wasn't much older than the last lot though he seemed to be a bit of a fidget. The green knew him to be a good Candidate as well. That one too. The green indicated Telon to her rider.
-----------
Vittor was in complete shock at the moment. A rider talking to him and a dragon that close! He was almost too excited to comprehend what was being said. HE heard the words all four and then moved to hug his brother tightly and jump up and down. "All four of us!" He beamed and looked over at both Elirian and Reiko.
The part about the names he nearly forgot but the rider, when finished explaining about the meeting looked at them all expectantly. "I'm Vittor." He said slowly and rather dumbly seeing as he was a bit nervous with this young woman staring him down like that. The curly haired boy looked back at his brother. Who cared how silly he sounded they were Searched! No one would dare pick on them in the Creche for a good sevenday!
------
Relina was slightly curious as to why the green rider had the boys seperate. She was at the opposite end of this line of children and as such didn't see much after that. Only that all four boys seemed really happy. Lucky! She watched the green come down further and stop at none other than Telon, who of course was moving somehow. She rolled her eyes. If he was chosen and she wasn't she'd never live it down! The dark haired girl peered down the row wishing for the dragon to choose someone else or at the very least choose her too.
