Ph'yn had been pulled aside yesterday after Weyrling Lessons by M'ren. He had been asked or more like told, that he needed to help his fellow Weyrlings and especially keep an eye on A'drazo. The boy seemed completely lost when it came to anything about Weyr life or dragons.
So it was with these instruction in mind that he went to check on the younger man. "A'drazo." Ph'yn smiled as he walked towards the youth. "I was wondering if you'd bathed Austranth yet today. Figure it be nice to talk while I work... and Ganymeth needs a good long bath and some oiling today." He wondered how this other boy had grown up like he had.
The Weyr had not seen the likes of him in a long time and certainly Ph'yn never had. The Weyrling assumed that there had been limited people to search this time so they had accepted those who were almost completely illiterate and hard to understand verbally. Thank goodness the kid had a brown. Brown dragons were known to be patient and kind and above all they weren't flighty.

A'drazo(Or Adreazioh, as he didn't understand why people insisted on shortening his name) had been looking at said dragon. Austranth had been insisting that he needed a bath, and A'drazo had been covering the steps with his dragon silently. They both were convinced they were missing a stage, but couldn't figure out what that stage was.
When Ph'yn started to approached them, Austranth sent his rider a quick warning- A'drazo hated nothing more than to be startled. The small blond boy tilted his head up and up, as he was crouched in front of his brown, staring into the large blue green eyes.
"'lo." A'drazo said to the boy when he stopped to talk to them. The boy was huge! And A'drazo would be lying if he didn't say that he wasn't slightly shocked at the size. Not the skin of course- he was from Igen after all.
When the dark skinned man started talking, A'drazo shot a worried look at Austranth who translated. He was cleaning his dragon too!
"Kay!" The little boy said cheerfully. "We ga no'?" His blue eyes never left Ph'yn's face as he turned and stood swiftly.
Mine means to ask if Yours is leaving right now. Austranth sent to Ganymeth quickly.

Poor kid was scrawny, more so than Ph'yn had remembered. Perhaps after all this bathing and dragon bonding he should take the boy to the Weyrhall. He couldn't be expected to lift bags of firestone when they all too likely weighed more than he did. Ph'yn shot a glance at his Bronze, who as usual was being nosy. The Bronze's head turned to examine the boy and his brown.
Ph'yn was glad to have company even if this had been sort of forced on him. He was not exactly the helpful sort usually but he felt sorry for the boy and what sort of life he had to have lived up till now. Austranth says his is ready. I shouldn't like to wait much longer.Alright, pushy pushy. Ganymeth harumphed a little before Ph'yn smiled at the other boy.
"Alright then. Ganymeth is getting impatient so don't mind him." He added, noting the Bronze had rushed past both of them to get outside first. "How are you liking the Weyr so far?" Ph'yn asked conversationally. He was a very social person and couldn't see how anyone could have as poor a vocabulary as A'drazo did. Luckily, he now had Ph'yn to help him. Or maybe he was unlucky that he had Ph'yn to help. His brother wouldn't believe he got stuck taking care of another boy who couldn't be more than a few years younger than Ph'yn himself.

Austranth was plenty pleased about being off for a bath. And he was almost certain the Bronze's rider had been trained many a time for what to do with a dragon, which was more than a little useful. Austranth didn't want to upset A'drazo by speaking to Thoth, have having Thoth's tutor them, but he didn't want an improper bath either. And he liked the idea of His speaking to someone other than himself. It wasn't good for a Brownrider to be much of a loner. He ambled forward, compensating for how short his rider was, hoping the that Ganymeth's Rider wouldn't try to rush them to follow his Dragon.
Adreazioh himself was having a little trouble with Ph'yn. The hulking man spoke quickly, and used odd sounding syllables that Adreazioh took time to translate. Working through the first sentence, A'drazo dismissed it as immaterial, and eyes nearly crossing from effort, he figured out the second sentence. It took a little extra time, as the small boy was unsure what a Weyr was, but though it had something to do with the place he was no, and betting on that, he responded.
"S'goo." Adreazioh blinked, and realized he probably had to add something extra on to the end. Mentally poking Austranth, the brown informed him to ask about the other boy's time at the 'Weyr'.
"An'ya?"

Ph'yn realized that A'drazo was having trouble talking. It couldn't hurt to befriend the boy and help him through Weyrlinghood. No one would expect him to make great speeches but he did need to have a basic vocabulary that was the same as that used by the Weyr as a whole.
The boy spoke and at first Ph'yn was at a complete loss. What in Faranth's name was he saying? He might need to get his brother involved in this one. Ugh, this was going to take a lot of work. Ph'yn managed to keep his confusion hidden, he didn't want to make the other boy feel bad. It wasn't his fault he wasn't properly educated.
He must have meant, its good, or something like that. As for the second part, it was a question so he could only assume the boy meant, and you. "I've lived here my whole life. Its good enough for me." He let his pace stay on the slower side for him. A'drazo was a bit small and quite probably because he wasn't fed well enough where he was from. If Ph'yn's mother saw this boy, she'd probably imprison him till he ate his weight in food. Probably more than that.
Ganymeth knew better than to get too far ahead, it made Ph'yn angry. So the Bronze waited for the others to catch up. It was a cool day, he hoped that didn't mean the water would be cold.

He's really much better at speaking in his mind. Austranth told Ganymeth seriously. Of course, even that might have been from Austranth's influence. The brown hadn't needed to learn language from his Rider, thankfully, as the continuousness of all the dragons in the Weyr had taught him the basics. And he works very hard to make me perfect.
Adreazioh had no inkling that he'd caused any trouble. Of course, he knew that people had a hard time understanding him, but as he had the same trouble with them, he didn't think anything of it. The fact that'd he'd found no one who could speak like him was kind of disconcerting, but he was sure they were just hiding away. He'd always hidden when he'd been a Tunnelsnake. Now that he had Austranth, he supposed he wasn't a Tunnelsnake of any sort, though he'd heard people talking about old dragonriders as though they belonged to a group. Not the Tunnelsnakes, but weird words, of things he didn't understand. Not that it mattered- the food here was so good and plentiful that Adreazioh would have joined any group to get it.
However, the tall black was speaking again, and as Adreazioh pieced together what he meant, some things became clear. For one, the reason that the man was so huge was because he was from this 'Weyr'. Obviously the food had amazing side effects. Truly amazing side effects. And apparently, this boy knew of places grander than the Weyr. Adreazioh wondered if they had better food, and decided to use the amazing powers of dragonflight to visit someday. As well as his 'foster' family.
"'m fra Igen." Well, at least there was one word he could say. "'te Caves." Perhaps two. It helped that not even the longest Holdless families messed up those two words. Well, unless you were using code, but Adreazioh knew better than to expect anyone to know that.

Ganymeth was not a patient dragon so he did not understand why the brown was so patient. However, being a dragon and a Bronze at that, he saw no reason to not be logical about the young rider. He will learn. You would not have chosen poorly. We dragons always know who is best for us. Ph'yn will try to help him with important words outloud. His brother could help too. His dragon is a turn older than us. Ganymeth spoke amiably with the brown. While the Bronze knew naturally he had rank over the brown he also knew that browns were rather reliable. He could be certain that befriending Austranth now would only help him in the future.
"Oh. Igen? The Caves..." Ph'yn had not heard anything good about them and worse he was from Igen. So long as Igen Weyr didn't find out about Telgar taking Candidates in their Territory...although some parts of Igen were under Ista as far as territory went. The Hold proper was most likely where the Caves were near so he figured it would be better to keep this information to himself.
"Did you have any brothers or sisters?" Ph'yn asked as they made their way slowly but surely, closer to the Lake. Being so much taller than the boy made it hard to judge his stride and Ph'yn often got a little ahead of him without meaning to. Immediately he would slow down. Actually it seemed the boy wasn't as dim as some people thought. He just didn't understand what they were saying. It was a good thing he impressed, now he had a dragon to help him.

Just so. Austranth replied, pleased at how well everything was working out. Bronzes and Browns had a natural affinity for each other, and he well knew it. Browns might not have been as high on the chain as Bronzes, but they could be be a help or a hindrance, and it was his due to be respectful, and powerful all at once. Being brown, seemed to be the best, but he was sure the other colors assumed the same thing.
Adreazioh, for his own part, looked more distraught when asked about siblings. He correctly remembered that they were brothers and sisters, of which, he'd had plenty before. Though he was his mother's only child, his father had others, who he bragged about, and seemed to think that Ario was only a far second to be sure. Then the 'snakes had been his brothers and sisters, and when they died, it had been very hard. But they all were used to death, so it wasn't as emotionally lethal to him. But then Telgar and Tesren and Gessie, and warm soft bodies that offered love and affection for their strange brother, and he'd not realized how much he'd missed them until then. Of course he had Austranth now, but he was no lil'un.
"Yuss." Adreazioh spread his arms very wide. "Th's meni. Thn 'ickness, an'," Adreazioh pulled his hands close to each other. "Th's meni." He smiled, and looked sad. "Ad sibs en a 'old, di' ah. Foster, AN blood." Four words- those lessons from the Harper back at Telgar sure had paid off. Granted, the first time he'd ever heard the word "Foster" had occurred at a Hold. And he liked to say it slowly, savoring the strange word.
"Yu?"

The Bronze was clearly pleased that he had made such a friendly acquaintance. They were only a couple weeks old at this point and had just begun lessons. He had yet to really bespeak his clutchmates, so this was going to be a fun thing for him. It would be good to have a friend to go through training with.
Ph'yn felt horrible, he had brought up a rather personal subject and it seemed it was a pretty awful one. That many siblings and only that many left. Ph'yn was glad he and his brother had come out unscathed. "I have an older sister, an older brother, a younger brother and a younger foster sister. So all in all I have this many."
Ph'yn held up four fingers. He hoped that would help get what he said across. He wasn't very good at dumbing down his own pattern of speech so it seemed poor A'drazo was going to have to do a lot of work deciphering what was being said to him. The Lake was fast approaching and it seemed to be fairly empty at this time. there was a green on the opposite end and a couple of blues. No one of importance or anyone he knew anyway.

Four of them. Adreazioh couldn't understand having a family that was mostly 'Blood' with only one foster. When he'd learned the difference at Telgar, he'd wondered how women had so many more live children than those woman of the caves. He supposed it was another one of those properties of food. He knew about his two blood brothers and sister at his father's Hold, all from a single mother.
"Ah 'ope ta m't th'm somd'y." Adreazioh said seriously. He liked families, and missed having his own, though Austranth was a fair substitute, and simply amazing by himself. Still, he wasn't quite as cuddly and a little one. Close, but not quite. Perhaps he could father a child or two- then he'd always have a cuddly baby. But not until he met a perfect girl. All the girls so far had been much to scrawny to be a good mother. And even then, no promises they'd want to have a baby. So, perhaps no cuddly babies for a long long time.
Austranth trotted ahead of his rider, and splashed into the lake, glancing about for anyone he knew. But there were no other Weyrlings, none at all. The brown didn't really have a problem with that, and splashed into the water, not noticing bits of his dead skin floating away.

He seriously doubted that anyone would want to meet his family. Sure both he and P'len were Bronzeriders now but their parents were nobodies. His foster sister was annoying and his little brother wasn't much for befriending people. Their older sister was insane, in his opinion and well, there was nothing particularly great about any of them. He and P'len were the best people to meet...
Ph'yn realized that the boy might actually miss his family and not just the ones who were deceased. A notion got put into his head, perhaps he should. Mother wouldn't mind. "My mother and father are Lower Caverns workers and they have family dinners once a sevenday. P'len and I will be going. I'm sure mother won't mind cooking for one extra." Ph'yn was making this complicated.
"What I mean to say is, you are invited to come to dinner with me and P'len tomorrow. My sister will talk your ear off but the food is good. " He wouldn't mind having a friend in his Weyrling class either. P'len was great but he would be graduating long before Ph'yn and he was learning different things than Ph'yn was.
Ganymeth followed the brown into the water, wading in gradually. It was warm compared to the air. He liked it. The Bronze waited for Ph'yn and A'drazo to catch up but was not the most patient Bronze.Save chit chatting for after we are bathed. My hide is important...and look at Austranth. It's a wonder his hide isn't ruined... Ph'yn rolled his eyes though he noted the Brown needed a good scrubing.
"Alright now I'm going to show you how to do this. Its very very easy if you do as I do..."

Blue eyes focused in on Ganymeth and Ph'yn, watching exactly what they did, and copying it exactly. Adreazioh wasn't exactly the strongest guy around, and he had to work at scrubbing hard enough. The dead skin that flaked off fascinated him. He'd seen humans shed like this, but he'd never realized that his brown was supposed to do the same.
Austranth seemed blissful leaning into the brush practically purring. Felines! Adreazioh thought suddenly. He'd get one of them! They were like little cuddly children. A smile blossomed on his face, only to vanish as he turned to stare at Ph'yn.
Had he missed anything? Was Ph'yn doing something different? Had he just said something. Adreazioh wanted to say something, but Ph'yn wouldn't understand him would he? The slightly scared boy scrutinized what Ph'yn was doing with Ganymeth, trying to decide if what he was doing was different.
Oh, why had he spaced out! Everything might be ruined forever!

Ph'yn looked to make sure that A'drazo was watching him. When he saw that the boy was following him exactly he stopped watching. He was so focused on his own dragon that when A'drazo stopped it took him a moment to realize that he had lost the younger boy. "Okay. We continue this scrubbing all over the hide. If you see a flaky area, scrub it extra good. Austranth will probably really like that." Ph'yn was glad he was helping him. Even the Bronze Weyrling knew that sometimes helping made one feel better.
Ganymeth didn't much care as long as Ph'yn continued to scrub him. A good while later, when he was finally finished scrubbing he said. "Now they can go splash around for a few minutes so we can take a break and get the oil out. Oiling is very very important. It keeps the hide from cracking. If a dragon has a cracked hide and flies between, he can die or become severly injured. Oiling is the best way to keep a dragon's hide in good condition. Plus they look good after a nice oiling."
The dark youth walked all the way up the sandy shoreline to where it met a tree. He dropped his bucket and sat down, hoping the dragons would splash around for enough time to give the two of them a rest. Ganymeth, for his part, began to dive in and out of the water, much like shipfish were rumored to do. (Of course those were just children's stories but one was allowed to wonder if they truly existed)

Adreazioh nodded, though he understood little of Ph'yn's lecture. Austranth would explain it to him later, of that he was sure. His brown was very good at explaining things. When he wanted too, that was. A smile filled his face. Oh, how he loved his brown. More than anything else in the world.
Testing their bond again, Adreazioh was filled with joy. Post-Impression mood swings? Oh yeah.
"Kay." He said again, and followed Ph'yn to the tree. He sat as well, and waited to see what the Bronzerider was going to teach him now. More about this 'oil'? Wouldn't be surprising.
Resting wasn't something Adreazioh was very experienced with.

Ph'yn wondered what sort of upbringing this other boy must have had. He barely understood a word and for all Ph'yn could see, he was underfed. "When they come back from their swim, I'll show you what I mean by oiling. Most dragons like it." He added, relaxing his legs and arms. Well the good news was that now, Ph'yn sort of knew and got along well with one of his clutch mates. He really wished he saw more of his brother but perhaps when they were both out of Weyrlinghood, that would be easier.
Ganymeth splashed about a little more but was on the shore within a few minutes. I am hungry. Can we please hurry? No. We will take as long as we need to. Remember Austranth and his need some direction and as a Bronze, you must set an example... He almost wanted to eat those words. Set and example? If his mother could hear him now!
Ph'yn stood up and met his dragon in a dry area on the shore. He looked to be sure that A'drazo followed and then pulled out the oil and rags. "Here, take this." He gave A'drazo a soft cloth. "First thing is first. You take some oil and place it on the cloth. Then you rub it into Austranth's hide. Like so." Ph'yn did just as he exlpained. When he took the cloth away from the area, the Bronze hide gleamed. "See how nice oiling is..."
