Jen was waiting impatiently in the assistant Headwoman's office. It would have been much easier if the girl had a Dragon, and Jenafa could simply order her to appear at the office at the right time- but she couldn't.
So, Jen waited, hoping that the drudge she'd sent to find the girl would either find her, or Kiaran would appear at her office for some other reason. Jenafa needed to talk to someone in charge, but didn't need the Headwoman- after all, Jen was well aware how busy the Headwoman was, and would rather inform her younger counterpart.
Admiring the metal bracelet one of her admirers had recently given her, Jenafa smiled. Saharth was due to rise any time now, and the Bronzerider's weren't being stingy in their attempts to woo her.
And their wooing might even help- who knew? It didn't matter to her, but why Kiaran wasn't there yet did.
Jenafa tapped her foot, feeling valuable time waste away.

The drudge did not find her, but then that was because the assistant headwoman was simply not where she was scheduled to be for the day. Something that happened rather frequently, as it was not uncommon for people to seek her out for matters they considered not big enough to bother Janesa with. And if their judgment turned out to be wrong, Kiaran always brought her superior into it.
She was returning to her office to write a report up on a suggestion of moving a certain drudge from the kitchens. The fact of the matter was that the young man was going to probably wind up killing himself or someone else if he was left under the head cook, and he'd be better used elsewhere. However, when she came into her office, it was pretty clear that she'd be writing that report later.
Kiaran spoke with a slight bow, "Weyrwoman Jenafa. I was not expecting you. I hope you've not been waiting too long." She would not make excuses, but the fact of the matter was that without an appointment, she could not guarantee where she'd be at any given moment.
She moved to her desk, and sat down since Jenafa already was. "How can I help you?"

"Assistant Kiaran," Jenafa returned the greeting easily. She had no problems with the Assistant Headwoman, and knew the folly of expecting people to know her whims before she did- thankfully, unlike some, her judgment was unaffected until Saharth was about to start blooding.
"I've had a brownrider transferred to the crèche- his name is Br'yan, and it's his punishment." She didn't explain why a crèche was considered a suitable punishment, she didn't have too. "He'll be working there until someone decides that it's enough. He'll be there for whatever the drudges need. If he should forget to inform them that his current rank is under the most junior Crèche worker, I should think you'll want to know."
Now that the Br'yan matter was closed- unless Kiaran had questions, Jenafa moved on.
"Now, we've had Searchriders out for the last few days, but do we have enough Candidates? I know that the last sickness struck Telgar Hold exceedingly hard, especially in our prime candidate ages. If we don't have enough, I'd like to know now."
Getting candidates transferred took a lot of effort, and Jen didn't want to deal with it while Saharth was egg-heavy.

Kiaran raised an eyebrow at the description of Brown Rider Br'yan's punishment. She could imagine that there could be several reasons for assigning such a punishment to a Rider, but she would not ask for the details of his crime or try to ascertain the reasoning for the choice. She had a feeling, from the mention that he would be under the lowest Creche worker, that it must have had to do with humiliating him through rank. Kiaran's biggest concern was that he would cause problems for the women in the creche. She'd have to make sure to check up on that and make sure that it was not an issue.
"Without eggs having been clutched yet, its hard to ascertain the answer precisely." Technically, Candidates were only her responsibility when they were assigned chores or being punished with extra chores. However, because of that, she had more than a rough understanding of how many Candidates there were.
"There are a couple of female Candidates. Do you expect your Saharth to clutch a queen egg? If so, I believe that we have several strong candidates, but I understand that the more to choose from, the better, according to some." She wisely kept her own thoughts to herself.
"Regarding young men? There are several. However, as there are always more dragons which may select men, I find it hard to imagine that there can ever be too many male candidates. It would be my recommendation, Weyrwoman, that you continue to send out Search Riders. However, I would also suggest not sending any to Telgar. They've recently increased, less than they wanted to, their tithing. I believe we would maintain good will and see more of an increase in the future, if we do not tax them with searching too much."
She might not keep on rumors that were not directly related to the running of Igen Weyr, however, that which affected Igen she stayed current on, and her information here was not rumor, but rather information she was privy to since she assisted the Headwoman so directly. There were, few, advantages to being personally familiar with the inventories and supplies.

"Saharth has never Clutched less than ten, and usually does more- so, we'll need twenty to twenty five boys. As for girls- well, you never know what the future holds."
Though if Saharth clutched a Gold, Jen would be more than happy. The next Goldrider could take on some her more onerous duties, and it would raise Saharth's worth in all eyes. Besides, Igen deserved to have more mature and maturing Queens than any other Weyr.
They had the purest dragonlines after all.
"We should steer clear of Telgar for a while anyway." Jen said quietly, more to herself than to Kiaran. "What with the plague hitting them some hard each time. But you are right." That was louder, and clearly meant for Kiaran to hear. "I'll recommend that we Search a little more exclusively in Keroon, and the like."
Jenafa stood, apparently about to leave, then paused and faced Kiaran.
"Do you need to bring anything to my attention?"
