Unfeeling eyes looked on as a large dragon snapped the neck of an unsuspecting wherry. Most people probably abhored such sights, Laszreen however found this beastial hunting sort of calming. She liked watching the power in the dragons and how they killed without feeling any emotions. She understood that simple thing, unlike the other things she had seen since arriving at the Weyr two days before.
Already she had been in trouble with the Candidate Master for fighting with a fellow Candidate. He deserved it. She should have slit his throat for calling her what he had. She wasn't a deadglow because she was a woman. Actually she wasn't one at all. He was being stupid. He had challenged her and she had accepted. Perhaps he thought because she was small that she would be no match for him. When the Candidate master found him on the floor with a sword at his throat he was none to pleased and made her give up all her weapons. Well, all that he knew about. She still had her dagger. It was only there for her protection. After all, some men didn't understand that no means no.
Laszreen yawned breifly. She was a bit tired today. Sleep had not come easily lately. To be frank her dreams were not pleasant and she found it better not to sleep at all. She noticed the dark rings under her eyes but it was better than thinking about the past and dreaming about death. Guilt was a feeling she could live without. It could be added to a long list of feelings she would rather never feel than deal with.
Another dragon was now on the hunt and she couldn't help but admire how quickly it scattered the herd of beasts. Once seperated they were weaker and it was easier to find the right one to eat. Dragons truely were fascinating. She wouldn't mind having one of her own but that would require something from her. No, it was better she befriend no one while she was here. People only let you down and broke your heart. Worse than that, they betrayed your trust, killed for power and ultimately were the cause of her dreams and lack of sleep.
The brunette sat down, her dress a pale cream hugged her small curves and because of the length made it easy for her to sit down. Igen sure was warm, even in comparison to a Bitran summer, here it was only spring. Tugging on a curly tendril she thought more about dragons. Maybe thread really was going to come back...

K'nor and Kintrath were going to the feeding grounds so that the big bronze could eat thats when the dragon landed so his could dismount. Once K'nor was on the ground he saw the girl and asked Kintrath, {Kint who is that? She seems to be new.} K'nor said and then Kintrath pounced on a beast snapping its neck. {No I do not know her, now let me eat.} Kintrath told His, K'nor approached her with a smile.
"Hello, may I inquire as to who you are?" K'nor asked politely as he waited for her response he liked to know if they were candidates so that he could know them when they impressed.

Laszreen found that the larger dragons were more interesting to watch feed than the smaller ones. They played around with the beasts a bit more, as if trying to pick off the best beasts rather than the easiest to catch. She noted that a Bronze was hunting and immediately shifted her gaze to watch.
Her father had trained her well enough that she heard the person coming up behind her long before he spoke. She turned slightly to see whom it was. Thankfully it wasn't that dimglow, Hierzet. Had she known the ranks of the Weyr, she would have been able to tell he was the Weyrlingmaster from the rank on his leathers. Instead she felt like she better remain standoffish. Laszreen was not one create trouble but she also wasn't one to be overly sweet or even pleasant. She knew very little other than cold court like formality.
She knew that people would treat her differently here than at home but no one could change overnight. Least of all herself. "Greetings dragonrider. I am Laszreen of Bitra. My respects to your dragon." She stood and curtsied slightly. Her cream colored dress made next to no noise when she moved. Her movements were fluid from many turns of training and preparing for a high position in Bitra.
Normally Laszreen would let things lie that way but she did not know proper Weyr etiquette. Laszreen in a normal tone for her that might sound almost unfeeling to a standerby said, "And you are?"

"I'm K'nor rider of Bronze Kintrath, and Weyrlingmaster." He said with a slight inclining of his head. She was an odd one but that was nothing new he was use to children doing things like that when he first met them his own students tended to also be that way.
Kintrath circled the pen and went down a little scaring the beasts slightly he then tried to pick off a bigger bull. The bronze had the beast then shook it until the neck snapped, he enjoyed this it was fun to play with them.

Laszreen was slightly shocked that she had simply called him a dragonrider when he was in fact the Weyrlingmaster. Besides that he rode a Bronze and deserved a great amount of respect because of it. She was not one to let her emotions show or get the better of her. Simply changing the subject of her obliviousness to something more easy for her to speak of.
"I've been here three days and I swear I've never seen so many dragons at once. Isn't it beautiful how they hunt and kill their prey?" If it were up to her she would watch for the rest of the day, sadly they were forcing her to do servant stuff. Her hands were uncalloused from lack of hard laboring tasks.
Chores would take getting used to. Where most everyone else needed to improve on reading and writing, Laszreen found her weak point was Weyr knowledge. It seemed simple cotholder's children knew more about the place than she did. Her parents believed dragons to be parasites of Pern and that thread would never return and as such had never talked to her of dragons. She only knew of their existance because she had seen a search party once before she herself was searched.

"Yes, though at times I find frustrating that the smaller dragons just kill instead of enjoy the hunt. Though most of my weyrlings enjoy it anyway," He said as Kintrath finished the second beast and was going for a third. This made K'nor grin this was interesting this girl was here was there to be a queen egg? Oh well no matter what things were going to turn out he already had three classes thank fully the weyrlings were all off doing chores so that he could feed Kintrath.

"Well thats the difference between the Ranks. See, a smaller dragon doesn't care what it eats as long as it does but larger dragons understand the value of choosing the one they really want. Smaller dragons are more interested in fulfilling their basic needs." It almost sounded like she knew what she was talking about. "Is that your Bronze over there?"
She hadn't met many dragons in person yet, only the green who carried her here from Bitra. "They tell me I would be a better Candidate for a larger dragon. I just don't understand how a green could tell if I'm impressible. It seems sort of odd. Especially with there not even being a clutch on the Sands." Laszreen had only begun to read the records she had been given on Weyr ranks and etiquette and who in the Weyr does what. It seemed that though women held the highest positions in the Weyr they also held the lowest.
Personally she would rather die on the Sands trying to impress than not impress and become a common drudge. Such a title was below her. That might be her pride talking but it was honest. She had no cause to lie, especially not to herself. Of course it meant little that she would rather die, because she did not fear death the way so many other people did.

"I guess your right. Yes that is Kintrath, my bronze he wins more green than gold." K'nor said the last bit with a smile at the thought of his dragons flight record. He was pleased to have a new girl to talk to sometimes they had a different point of view to share. Kintrath decided then that he was full and it was time to see who this girl was his was talking to her so maybe she was interesting.
{Hello, I'm Kintrath and Mine is K'nor.} Kintrath bespoke her, he did this every so often so this was nothing new to him though sometimes it was a distasteful experience.

As a holdbred woman, Laszreen did not understand this whole mating flight concept. It all sounded like an excuse not to settle down with one person. It was definately going to take some getting used to. The brown eyed girl stared at the dragon as he flew closer. She didn't understand what was so important about winning flights. Obviously it meant something to K'nor and his dragon.
The dragon voice entered her mind, loud and strange. She looked around as if to see where the voice was coming from. Of course she collected herself, blushing slightly for being so simple. She heard rumors of an HAD on Pern but knew herself not to be one so there was no way for her to communicate what she was thinking to the dragon. Laszreen decided it would be best to verbally greet him.
"Well met Kintrath. I trust the beasts were to your liking?" She sounded more like a Lady than a rider but that was upbringing for you. Laszreen, who was never scared of anything was a bit nervous about how little she knew at the Weyr. She might ask the Candidatemaster for extra lessons...or a mentor type for a few days. In any case she was feeling more and more out of place by the minute. Being who she was and with the amount of pride and ego involved in keeping herself sane, Laszreen would never allow such weaknesses to show. Whether through body language or verbally she would keep her cool and remain fairly unemotive.

{Of course though they need to eat more before being hunted.} He told her he was a very picky bronze he preferred the big fat beasts not the smaller ones that were the biggest of these herds. K'nor grinned it was interesting knowning your dragon was bespeaking someone and that they would continue to do so as long as they were still Weyrlingmaster. Then K'nor saw the one boy he wished was at Telgar because then he would not have to deal with him, his oldest son Kanit approached with a grin.
"Hello, K'nor my duty to Kintrath." He said as he saltued his father and turned to face the young woman he was talking to. He saw she was quite a beauty he hoped she wasn't his fathers latest conquest. They always tended to end up with child then he left her to care for it, like he had left Kanit, this was going to be irritating.
"Kanit, how goes the efforts to impress?" He asked with Fatherly concern in his voice, he would always treat Kanit like any other weyrbrat. Kanit shrugged and continued to look at the woman she was a good looking young woman.

She smiled, a rarity of hers, at the dragon. "Well you know, Kintrath, I could inform the beastcrafters that they are not feeding the beasts well enough." She often forgot she could no longer order anyone around. "I'm sure they'd understand that a great Bronze such as yourself needs a better quality of food choice." She herself was used to even better than the Weyr could provide. For all her pickiness, she did approve of the amount of food offered and the variety.
Laszreen felt the change in mood as clearly as if she had seen it. The tension cut the air like a sword cut flesh. She didn't expect either of them to be this way but it seemed they hated eachother. She could understand that at least. "I'm Candidate Laszreen of Bitra." The girl responded to the younger man staring at her. The word Bitra slid off of her tongue like venom. Bitra was known for a less than moral society in comparison to the rest of Pern.
"Are you standing for the next clutch? This is my third day here and I was wondering when the next one might be?" She hoped one of them knew. After all, she was new here and did not want to be put at a disadvantage. She was getting tired of being stared at by Kanit. Actually, she deplored being thought of as at all attractive and since that would be the only reason he was still looking at her she was growing rather irritated.

"Why yes I'm, this'll be my eighth time standing. I'm Candidate Kanit son of bronzerider K'nor." He said looking away from her a lady could only take so much staring. She was due to begin to dislike it, this was completely normal for them.
K'nor smiled and then asked Kintrath {Which gold is glowing? I know you are paying attention.} K'nor waited for the dragon to tell him since the bronze paid more attention than he would he was interested in keeping his position.
{Saharth. Mine you should know that.} Kintrath then turned his head to Laszreen, and thought a moment before saying to her. {I do not think you can order them like a Queen, you are still dragonless.} Kintrath told her truthfully he was a wise dragon drawing from His of course.
"Do you need any help adjusting to weyr life? I could help, of course he may try and do something he shouldn't." Kanit pointed at his father and then glanced at the ground he was beginning to feel shy around her.
"After Golden Saharth has risen and clutched her eggs hatch." K'nor told her as Kanit looked at her.

That explained it. Family was not a strong point of hers right now either. She no longer trusted them blindly as she had before. Her siblings were all dead and she was about 20th in line for the Bitran Lordship, something she no longer cared about. Her parents could rot, dreaming about things that would never come to pass.
"I don't know Kintrath, you'll find I can be very persuasive without a dragon to help influence people." Besides, you could go a long way with a smile but you could go a lot father with a smile and a dagger. She said none of that aloud nor would she. They ad taken her sword, throwing knives and crossbow, all she had left was her family dagger and it held sentimental value.
Laszreen wasn't used to having one person talk to her let alone two and a dragon. She wasn't sure if this was wise, being inbetween father and son. Still she was never one to back out of an iffy situation. "I may need some help with Weyr etiquette. My parents only thought it suitable to learn Hold and Craft etiquette. There is nothing anyone can do to help me understand the social system of the Weyr."

"Of course people can help you if you keep you let them." Kanit said as he glared at his father, he was very proud. Kanit told her as his father watched Kintrath bespeak her he knew that she would probably impress a gold.
K'nor smiled at the last statement Kintrath was saying something to her that he wanted to know what but he wasn't going to pry. This was being enjoyable, he was hoping that both of them would impress and become weyrlings.
{Yes but you can not harm them, then you would not be allowed to stand.} Kintrath said to her, his eyes on His.

She raised an eyebrow at the younger man's statement. Laszreen was hesitant to ask for any help, let alone from someone she felt was dealing with many of his own demons. Her dark gaze was no longer on the dragon but rather settling in the distance on the ledges around the Bowl. Placing a small hand on her hip, the young woman remarked ot the dragon. "Don't worry about me too much Kintrath. I do have a moral compass of sorts even if I do come from Bitra."
Laszreen wasn't sure she wanted to get in the middle of this father-son battle. She had seen enough family bickering in her own home life. Her father mostly did the arguing but it seemed to her that the son was more angry and unable to hide it. He needed a hobby. One shouldn't let ones emotions show through so easily. Of course, not many mastered their emotions as well as she did.
As such she was not about to stand around and watch them being foolish. "What do you want to impress? I've heard that people have preferances but I don't see why." She was obviously naieve when it came to dragons though she tried to seem fairly knowledgeable.
