Kycira got to working washing the brown dragon she, this was a review so she did her best and she worked as hard and well as she could. She was going to do this time no matter what it took, she was going to become a dragonrider! She half listened to the other candidates but she also ignored what was deemed unimportant.

Elra could not help but find herself smiling at the younger man’s politeness. The way he spoke and the ease at which he did so left her feeling he was being genuine – not polite simply because he should be or to spite her because she was a woman in a man’s world.
Giving Phwyn a similar searching look she too turned back to the dragon as she answered. “I actually just arrived before this lesson. I was told to come straight here, so here I am.” Laughing softly she added, “I didn’t think I’d be put into a lesson as soon as we landed.”
Noticing another girl nearby, Elra decided that since the first introduction had gone so well she might try another before her luck ran out. Offering a hand she smiled at Kycira as well.
“Hello, I’m Elra.” After all, you can never have too many friends.

"Hello I'm Kycira. " Kycira smiled and hoped that it was enough she was an old candidate so this was nothing new. She was hoping that this time there would be a Gold on the sands so that she could stand again. This time she would impress at least she hoped so, her time here was going to be spent trying to impress the weyrwoman so she and the other girls could stand anyway. Kycira seriously hoped to impress and if she wasn't allowed on the sands she would find a way to get on them one way or another.
Kycira was still trying to get about her work so she brought a bucket and smiled as she worked on the Brown. She would do her best to get him clean and clean right, Kycira didn't chat much when working so she stopped for a moment. "Sorry Elra I don't talk much when I'm in class, how about we chat and get to know each other after class?" Kycira asked.

Phwyn wondered why they didn't give her a day to settle in. Usually they did. Then again this was a rare occassion when they were permitted to wash a dragon. Good experience for someone who had just arrived. Phwyn was done scrubbing his part of the poor dragon. "Well, I believe you will find that at the Weyr, there isn't a minute to waste. Not when it comes to chores and lessons anyway."
He began to rinse the hide he had scrubbed. The hide shouldn't have any soapy residue left when it came time to oil the dragon. It could irritate the hide or interefere with the oils working. Kycira was one of the few people he had seen before. Sadly he did not know her too well.
"Some people don't like to talk during lessons." He explained to Elra. "Since the Candidate Master isn't giving a lecture, I don't see what is wrong with talking." Phwyn wouldn't care if it were a lecture either. He never thought about consequences until he was living them. Then he was put out.

Hearing Kycira ask to talk after class rather than now Elra’s smile faultered a moment. Was she doing wrong introducing herself in class? Maybe the girl was right, maybe she should wait. Nodding that she would talk to the other girl after class, she looked back at the brown hide to find it soaped up rather well.
Elra, while never fond of chores of any sort, wasn’t too put down by the idea of being kept busy. Until she had firm friends and knew what there was to do around the Weyr… well there wasn’t much else to do. After all, she didn’t have her sister to bother every waking hour of the day out of boredom as well as affection.
Following Phwyn’s actions, she made sure to rinse the dragon well as the boy managed to bring her faltering smile back to health. Well if he didn’t think she’d get in trouble… The candidate master had mentioned this might be repetitive so he’s obviously been here for a time. She felt a little more confident.
“I’m glad, I enjoy talking while working. It keeps the mind busy with the hands. Not to mention keeping a chore from getting boring.” Then again she couldn’t imagine how washing a dragon could get boring! It was such a wonderful beast… Tiring? Yes. Boring? Defiantly not.
“How long have you been a candidate Phwyn? Are you from the Weyr?”

Kycira sighed she didn't want to seem anti social she just knew each and evry lesson was vital to when she impressed. She didn't question it anymore she would stand until she was to old to do so, she would go through these lessons for eternity if she had to. Kycira watched the other people for a second then went back to scrubbing making sure he was soaped and cleaned right.
She waited to see where the others were before moving onto the oil, she knew what she was suppose to do for this lesson, it was teaching them proper hide care. This was important when she impressed, because you had to bathe and clean your own dragon as a rider and as a weyrling.

He understood that some people were not raised in the Weyr and that a lot of the girl Candidates were more nervous about these lessons. It had to do with their more and more limited options. Not that he cared but it seemed to make them a bit more touchy when it came to lessons. He would make it a point to talk to Kycira later too. Phwyn didn't want her to think he was picking on her for paying attention.
After all, he was usually in trouble of one kind or another. "I've always been one to enjoy the company of other people rather than doing things alone." Phwyn preferred to be surrounded by people. Being alone was not something he cared for. He had a need to be with people constantly.
"Me? I'm Weyrbred. My parents are drudges. So is my older sister. My older brother is a Weyrling. Then I have a younger brother and a foster sister." An annoying foster sister, who loved to talk all the time.

“Oh so all of your family is here? That must be nice.” Elra said with a smile, her hand gently rubbing the brown hide as her thoughts lingered back to her own family. She had not been the child who easily accepted her foster parents as her own, and even if her blood father came back, she knew she would not be able to accept him either. Her sister, however, was the one she could accept. Her sister had never left her and had always been true to her.
“All I have back home is a sister. A wonderful sister, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to have a larger family.” Her movements slowed as she thought about it, what life might have been like if her mother had only lived through her birth. The thought, however, was a common one and as such was quickly swept away as she brought herself back to the present.

"Yes, unfortunately my entire ancestry is here..." He was referring to his grandparents but didn't much feel like this was the place to bring up grandfather. "Large families aren't all that. I mean you don't get anything you want and your constantly being compared to your siblings. 'Why can't you be more like your brother?' " That sort of thing drove him crazy.
It was enough that he was like his brother. Phwyn however, always seemed to be in and out of trouble whereas Pylen had never been in trouble unless Phwyn was involved. If he didn't have such an arrogant side to his personality, Phwyn might deny that all the times they were in trouble it was his idea. He wanted the credit for thinking the things up that got them into trouble.
"Sounds like you and your sister are really close. Did she come to the Weyr too?" Phwyn asked mostly because he couldn't imagine her sister could be lovlier than she was. If Elra did have a sister here, he wanted to find out who she was. It wasn't every day you met a beautiful young woman with an easy going nature.

“Oh no,” Elra answered with a laugh. Turning to face the boy, she shrugged her shoulders a little bit. “My sister is too smart to put all of her hopes and dreams into a chance at impressing. She is studying for her journeyman knots at the healer hall right now, and if I know her she’ll pass them without a second thought.”
While Elra had always wished she was as smart as her sister, she couldn’t help but think of Eisu with pride. Not many women could catch onto a man’s craft as quickly as she had been able to. Elra herself was proof of that.
A small rumble made Elra look down at her stomach and laugh. “Say Phwyn, do you think you could show me where to get some food around here after the lesson and after I talk to the candidate master? I’m starving, in my excitement to come here I had missed breakfast.”

"Oh. I think it takes an extra something to become a dragonrider, especially for a woman to. I'm sure she's much happier in a craft though. Some people don't like the uncertainty that comes with waiting to impress. " Phwyn actually liked taking risks. It seemed to him even if you lost every once in a while in the end big risks paid off. He wouldn't be able to impress if he didn't try so where was the point in not trying?
Having finished up on his part of the dragon he wondered if the lesson was almost over. Phwyn wanted to get out of the freezing cold and go back where it was warm inside. Possibly near a hearth with a hot cup of klah.
"Certainly. The Weyrhall is a place your going to need to know well and no one would be better to show it to you than I. After all I've been here longer than a lot of Candidates. Sixteen turns of experience at navigating the Weyr. I will be your official guide." He grinned. "Besides I'll be wanting some lunch before my afternoon chores."

Elra could not help but feel better about her decision to come as Phwyn spoke of something extra special to be a rider. That meant there was something special in her and strengthened her resolve. She would impress and nobody in all of Pern could hold her back. She would show her sister she could succeed in something.
The lesson was, in fact over now as Elra ran a hand over the moist brown hide once more. The dragon really was magnificent! To have a life here… a fresh life where she could be herself and not looked down upon because she was a woman. That was what she hoped to find here.
“I will meet you after I speak with the candidate master?” She confirmed with Phwyn before smiling and going back to the candidate barracks to collect her things and learn where she would be staying.
