Despite the green's brightly glowing hide, Kanoni was still blue. Her hazel eyes held a lackluster instead of their usual bright-eyed feature, and her natural grin was absent. Inside, her heart attempted to rend itself, and even her hair showed her lack of enthusiasm for anything. K'dyn had become all too popular as of late.
She knew not with whom or why, but it had seemed that shortly after they had begun having feelings for one another (and she had slipped up with that stupid kiss), the girls began to notice how devilish handsome and tricksy he was. Mount that on top of a couple won greenflights, and it was a recipe for depression in the usually bubbly blonde. "I suppose that's the life of a greenrider." She dared not add the rest of that particular statement; she was beginning to sound morose.
Yanth was sunning elsewhere, and while the small green was napping, Kanoni had taken the time to steal away. The dragon would know where she was the moment she awoke, but for now, the bank by the lake was the most comfortable, and comforting, place to be. Few people would venture out this far, and she was almost assured to be away from K'dyn and his entourage.
That thought made her mood worse. Kanoni wasn't usually the type to dwell on disappointment, but she actually really did like K'dyn. They'd had some good times together. "Well, not anymore. If he wants one of those sweet, demure Trivenis, that's what he'll get." Her humor rested on the notion. Kanoni hadn't met her, but she was sure she was nice and quiet. The thing was, Kanoni hadn't gotten that impression from K'dyn. And she was more than a trifle jealous, though she'd never admit it. Quietly, she wondered what fault of hers it was that K'dyn didn't like. She'd never change, but she didn't feel she had any real shortcomings.
"Maybe I'm too loud. Or obnoxious. Or rude." The duo had done some pretty bad pranks before, but that was Zahra Wing. "Or maybe he thinks I'm a glow short of the basket...."

K'dyn was trying to clear his head, now that Ortath had promised him not to enter them into any flights without okaying it with K'dyn first. The dragon had needs, which he understood now but they had to do things in a more honorable fashion from now on. HE didn't want to come across as egotistical or be lumped in with the other riders of the Weyr who flew whatever greens they could and moved on.
He was frustrated now more than he wanted to be. It wasn't that flights were bad, he enjoyed them but he didn't want to end up hurting people. K'dyn was afraid to get hurt himself. He needed a friend right now. The guys he knew wouldn't understand and the two girls he normally talked to were either busy or avoiding him.
In his plans to walk around the Lake he had not taken into account that either of the women he had been wanting to talk to would be there. Kanoni seemed a little down and she was talking to herself about a guy? She hadn't mentioned anyone to him. Not that he would care who the man was other than to want to hurt him later. It was probably best he didn't know who it was.
K'dyn knew how to be quiet and he was, very very quiet as he snuck up behind Kanoni. He put a hand on her shoulder gently. "Guess who." K'dyn knew she would know right away but got the distinct feeling Kanoni wasn't her light hearted self.

"I dunno. Who?" Kanoni said glumly. She did, of course, know it was K'dyn, but she really had no desire to see him just now. It wasn't that she was angry at him, or anything; she was simply jealous of the girls he chose to spend his time with. It was stupid of me to think I could have you, she thought as she turned to look at him. Her eyes viewed him dispassionately. "Hey K'dyn." She returned to her normal laying down posture.
She could not, however, feign rudeness, and she meant it when she patted the blanket she was laying on for him to join her. "Sit awhile?" she asked, keeping her questions and answers short and simple. She had missed him; her heart-pangs that were currently bounding against her chest were obvious of that. Unsure of what else to say, she remained quiet. For once in her life.
Him away from her depressed her; him near to her frustrated her. Why couldn't he just see past all the things that were wrong with her? She liked him, and he liked her, or so she thought. "Congratulations on Ortath's winning. You must be pleased with him." They were the most painful words she had ever said.

He could tell that something wasn't right with her. Not that he was an intuitive person. Actually, he considered himself fairly dense when it came to other people's emotions. Kanoni wasn't just anyone and he felt he knew her well enough to know what was bothering her. K'dyn got the distinct feeling, she didn't really want to see him.Maybe he should ahve left her alone but it was too late now.
"Okay." He laid down next to her, back on the blanket. Looking up at the sky was somewhat calming to him. She wasn't herself at all today. If he asked what was bothering her, she'd probably deny that anything was. K'dyn didn't want her to be depressed like this. It wasn't her normal personality and he liked her normal personality.
He was glad that he had bumped into her here. She was always nowhere to be found when he wanted to see her. He had missed her. A best friend is hard to come by. You are a dimglow sometimes. You better butt out of this...The brown did, because he knew that K'dyn was not pleased with him, though the dragon didn't see why.
K'dyn was slightly shocked at what Kanoni said. The fact that she had said it was enough. Did the entire Weyr know that the only two flights Ortath had flown in, he had won? For all he knew the Lower CAverns all knew too. The place was rampant with this sort of gossip. None of that really mattered because this information seemed to be bothering Kanoni. "Thanks, I guess. He's in trouble, big trouble. Actually I'd like to lock him in his weyr and never let him out."

Kanoni smiled. It was a sort of sad smile, but it existed. "In that case, I hope you work out your problems soon." The conversation seemed to be minimal, but she was comfortable sitting in silence. She kept her mouth shut; she knew it might be better to listen. Maybe he'd admit some more feelings for her, but most likely not. Beginning to believe the kiss might have been a mistake, Kanoni winced.
"Yanth's up for a flight pretty soon. Just thought you should know." She stood up abruptly, leaving the blanket for him. "You'd better let your new girl know. Her dragon might be able to keep Ortath from following Yanth." Kanoni felt the red-hot tears rising to her eyes. "Maybe that'd be for the best."
She turned and walked away, but quickly broke into a run. She tripped, in all her clumsiness, and scraped her knee on the rocky ground. "Ow!" She yelled, dually annoyed that she didn't get away from K'dyn, who would certainly be coming after her, and that she had hurt herself because of her lack of grace.

He was in a bad position here. K'dyn wasn't entirely sure why. Most likely he was being thick headed again. His sister would probably tell him what he should do in this situation but she too was busy lately. At first he thought she was saying these things to upset him then he knew that the rumors were upsetting her more.
She mentioned Yanth's flight and he began to understand. He thought she had only kissed him because she liked him and she was looking for a fling. He really couldn't be that person with her. If he began a relationship with Kanoni, he'd fall in love with her. There was no doubt about that. In the end he was afraid of getting hurt.
Before he could defend himself she was up and running. K'dyn got up quickly and ran after her, not for the first time. He was fairly close to her when she fell. "Are you alright?" He knelt down and saw that she had scraped her knee. "You know, its not fair that you keep doing that to me. I need to have a minute to get my thoughts together. If I seem slow its because I would never want to say anything that would make things worse between us." He paused, taking her hand in his so that he could help her up.
K'dyn was embarrassed by his own behavior not just his dragon's. He hadn't had any intention of winning those flights but it would have put Ortath's nagging about flying to a rest. Of course during the flights that had changed, dragon lust was something he couldn't understand. "Kanoni, I'm not going to lie and say it was entirely Ortath's fault for the flights. The reason for it was partly fear and partly longing. I'm afraid of being hurt but I also want to be in a relationship." And not with just anyone. He didn't say that because he had to gage her mood first. She might hate him right now.

"I'm fine," she said through her tears. The knee stung. Badly. It was nothing a bit of numbweed salve wouldn't cure, but for the sand stuck in it. She blew on it a little while she listened to him. "I'm sorry," she mumbled when he chastised her for running. But he kept talking, so she kept her ears open.
Suddenly, her hand was in his rather larger one, and she felt a bit like a child. Words came from his mouth, and Kanoni began to understand. He had thought, previously, that she'd only wanted sex. Well, that was a proper assumption; most girls that rode green were too amorous for anything else. But not her. "'Ole one in a million,'" her brother used to say (though he had meant it rudely), and it was true. "I want to be in a relationship."
And so, he was one in a million too. It was abnormal for a man, especially a dragonrider, to be able to admit such things. Most expected to have their minds read. And dragonmen were better about respecting women than holder-men were, of course, but still. Men were men, and Kanoni had seen them at their most chauvinistic. But K'dyn was none of that.
"But K'dyn, if you wanted that, why didn't you tell me? What did you think I wanted?" She knew, of course, but she wanted to hear it from his own lips.

K'dyn was beginning to feel more and more like an asshole. He didn't understand women, that was for sure. He hadn't known what she wanted. Being a man, he hadn't asked nor had he wanted to discuss it. Communication was not something he was particualry good at but it was necessary in situations like these.
He didn't even think about the fact that he still held her hand. She wanted ot be in a relationship but probably not with him. Not after all that had happened. "I thought you wanted a simple affair. A lot of women here do that and not just greenriders." He had grown up at the Weyr, he should know. He also knew that he had never let any woman get to know him so well, as he had Kanoni. "If you hadn't noticed, I'm not so good at communicating." He gave her a sheepish grin.
Taking a handkerchief out of his jacket, he used his free hand to dry her eyes. "Kanoni, I know your not like other women. That is why we are such good friends. I heard you earlier, before I sort of snuck up on you. Was I the reason you were saying those things?" He would have to hurt himself later if so...

K'dyn grinned at her, and her heart melted. She couldn't be angry with him. She giggled a little bit, just the tiniest chuckle. "I know, K'dyn." Kanoni could never be mad at him for too long. He was too sweet, and not at all obtrusive. And he was far too honest to ever be conniving. His words were true; he wasn't good at communication. But then, she was rather guilty of the same crime.
He began to wipe away her tears--which were not all scrape-induced--and begged the question that she hoped he wouldn't. She looked down into her lap, hating when people overheard her self-deprecations. "Yes. I was worried about why you didn't like me...like I like you." Kanoni knew she sounded inane and childish, but she was done messing around with this. Mincing words had never been her strong suit; her place in Zahra surely denoted that. She looked back up and met his eyes. "K'dyn, I like you. A lot. And I want to be in a relationship, too...with you." She smiled shyly.

It was his fault she had been upset earlier. That was probably the worst feeling he had felt in a while. The fact that she had even for a moment thought that there was something wrong with her made him angry at himself. Why she would ever think she was anything less than wonderful, he didn't know. Women would always be a mystery to him.
"Never think for one moment, that there is anything wrong with you. I mean thats exactly opposite of the reason for my fear. I didn't want to fall in love with you because it would be all too easy to do." That was the truth. Wasting time with words that aren't really doing anyting about the situation. Silly silly humans. K'dyn rolled his eyes at his dragon.
Taking his handkerchief back he looked into her hazel eyes for a moment. The usual spark that lie in them was coming back. He would avoid making her so depressed again if he could. Should he take up on her offer of a relationship? Was it worth the risk of ruining their friendship? There weren't any right answers in these situations.
Instead of weighing all the pros and cons as he would normally have done, he followed his gut feeling. Kanoni was special to him and he wasn't going to lose her because of careless indecision. He could have spoken more words but instead he bent his head down to kiss her gently on the mouth. That was hopefully a better answer.

Up in the weyr, freshly-awoken Yanth roared. It wasn't a mumble of a thing, nor a sigh, but a full-out, undoubted roar. And it was ecstatic. The rider and the dragon were equal, they always said, and they (whoever they were) were proven correct yet again. Kanoni had listened somewhat numbly. If there's nothing wrong with me, then why won-- The thought was interrupted by a sudden kiss. And her ponderings were answered.
Though shocked at first, she quickly regained her senses. Throwing her arms around his neck, she gave her response to his unasked question. She kept it gentle, though; she hadn't missed the bit of tentativeness in his action, and she wouldn't ruin her chances by being so brash and abrasive this time. Concessions need be made.
After a time (which later seemed like eons), she pulled back. "K'dyn...I...." But instead, she burst again into tears. Joyous tears though they were, she couldn't help but be afraid. If this turned out badly, it could and would wreck their existing friendship. "I want to try, I know that you don't want to be hurt, but I won't hurt you, I don't think, anyway, and anyway, I bet we might work out and stuff, and I think we should..." Should what? Have a relationship? That sounds dumb. "You know..." she finished lamely. Scooting closer to him, she looked at his face. "I want to be with you," she said softly.

In that first kiss, he should have known but he had not ever been kissed before then. Now he understood that feeling that he got when she kissed him. No one else had made him feel this way.
The dragon was finally being quite but K'dyn could feel the smugness that the Brown was emitting. He had known better than K'dyn and he was never going to let him live it down. The best part was that K'dyn didn't care. When she pulled away he knew she wanted to talk. They needed to have a clear understanding of what they were doing.
He was not exactly comfortable kneeling so he sat down. Kanoni moved in closer whiich was perfect for him to put a strong arm around her. He didn't understand why she was crying. His handkerchief was in his hand again befire she got out half the words. As usually, neither of them were good at saying what they meant in an eloquent fashion. He figured part of that was fear of rejection.
"We can do anything." He smiled at her and then handed her his handkerchief. "I want to be with you too. More than you know. I've wanted it for a long time." He held her closer to him. She was beautiful, surely she knew that but he wondered if he ought to be complimenting her more. He really didn't know what she would be expecting.

K'dyn took her in his arms, and nothing (forgiving Impressing Yanth) had ever felt so right. Kanoni never wanted to leave that one spot. Congratulations, Kanoni, her dragon said happily. She knew how the rider had pined over the brownrider for weeks. It was good for them to have some new excitement in their lives. He wiped away more of her tears, and said he wanted to be with her too.
"Oh, K'dyn, I'm so glad. And now I don't have to worry about who catches Yanth when she flies. I just know Ortath will win the Flight." For the dark green dragon was close. On her weyr ledge, her glistenin hide shimmered in the midday sun. Kanoni looked at her reflexively, to gauge how close she was. Kanoni gave it a few days, if that many. "Thank you," she said, grateful to him for lifting her dark mood. "You're the most wonderful thing in the world," she added, somewhat shyly, looking at her lap.
Yanth yawned and stretched. Her slowly whirling eyes glowed green and blue, and a trifle violet, though whether that was a reflection of her mating status or Kanoni's lust, no one would ever know. She spread her wings out; she wasn't a very big dragon, so her ledge accommodated her. It's about time, hmm. The green was just happy the Kanoni was happy. Anything else was moot; she didn't think about tomorrow much.

K'dyn was glad they had gotten everything out. Even if he could have lived with the cloud hanging over his head, he couldn't have been parted from her for much longer. "Ortath will be pleased to know that you have high hopes for him. I'd still like to see him grounded. He doesn't deserve Yanth but of course he will try." It wasn't all Ortath's fault but the dragon had been better since flying and of course winning. A large ego that was only being added to by Kanoni.
"I'd have to disagree with you there." He wasn't all that and certainly not wonderful. Not after all the pain he had caused. "I could even argue that out of the two of us, you are more wonderful." He really did not deserve her right now. He would spend as much time as it took to make himself more worthy. K'dyn would ask for no less for his best friend.
He felt a shiver run up his spine. "What do you say, we go back inside?" It was chilly and the slight breeze was picking up some. He wasn't generally one to complain about the cold but it was starting to get to him a little. Our weyr is a mess if you intend to bring her here.We may not be. Don't be so pushy.

It was chilly, he was correct. She'd only been outside because she hoped the coolness would be a deterrent towards visitors. Now, however, her anger and sadness was wiped away, her slate clean. K'dyn had made her a very happy girl. She snuggled into him before standing and extending a hand to help him up. "Yes, let's." She grinned. "It is chilly."
It's not cold. It's actually quite nice, Yanth told her. It was strange. Dragons never seemed to be especially cold, even between. Maybe it was all the time they spent on their ledges, sunning.
"Yanth says it's not that cold." She laughed. "But us of the less thick skins should probably head inside." Pausing, she waited for him. "But where shall we go?"
