V'rak moved at a casual pace down the corridor, his expression one of profound thoughtfulness. He'd tried to fine Lan'ae, however, the older rider was not in his weyr.
Bristith, have you seen Eznorth? he asked his dragon. Maybe he'd taken any number of his horde of offspring for a short fly, or to play. The older bronze had a way with children, much like his rider... which is exactly why V'rak wanted him to be in charge of the would-be newest class of Weyrlings.
Not lately. the bronze replied with a somewhat pompous attitude, Maybe if you come oil my hide, I'll help you find him.
The Weyrleader gave a mental snort at his dragon. When you see him, tell him to tell His I wish to speak with him. AND then I'll oil your thick hide.
V'rak continued back towards his own old Weyr, where the older rider would no doubt be able to find him.

V’rak had been right about his wingrider as Lan’ae asked his bronze to swing back toward their weyr, his youngest son seated in front of him and strapped into the seat that was meant to be the rider’s, not the passengers. He couldn’t help but dolt upon his two youngest, all the rest and left go back to Lan’ae’s hold of origin – Fort.
“That’s it, remember when you’ve your own dragon all you’ll need to guide him is your legs. That leaves your arms open for what?”
“Firestone, father.”
“Exactly.” Lan’ae said proudly as he watched his son manage his bronze’s landing without holding on – though securely strapped in. Knowing the feel of the landing eventually taught the rider how to move his body so the sudden halt didn’t send him flying into the dragons neck to result in a bloody nose.
His son, having flown a good number of time was able to unbuckle himself and didn’t hesitate to slide off the bronze as his father followed behind him.
“Go ahead and wash up. Your mother probably has chores for you.” He said, giving the boy a ruffle on the head even as his son reached up to return the favor with a laugh before heading into the weyr. Smiling knowingly after him, Lan’ae turned back and continued to take the riding straps off Eznorth.
Your Wingleader searches for you. “Oh really? I thought today was a rest day. Oh alright, I’ll go.” He replied, not bothering to keep his reply silently between himself and his dragon. Hanging up the riding straps, he left for the Weyrleaders Weyr – the new residence of his wingleader.
Finding himself at the entrance, he bowed to the bronze dragon – younger than his own – but still the rightful mate to the queen as he moved to stand in the doorway.
“Looking for me V’rak? Sorry, I was attending to my children. Today is a rest day isn’t it?” he said, his voice friendly with the younger man as he waited to be invited in.

Bristith was kind enough to warn V'rak that Lan'ae was on his way. No doubt a courtesy shared by Eznorth. V'rak looked up from his desk as soon as he heard the other rider, smiling a bit as the older man bowed to Bristith.
"Don't feed his ego too much, old man. He hardly needs it." The Weyrleader said with a chuckle and waved Lan'ae in. "I figured you be out and about with them, as is your right on a rest day indeed." He waved for the older man to take a seat across the desk.
"You love your children very much, I know this." the Wingleader continued without hardly a pause rearranging things on the somewhat tidy desk. "You surely know by now that R'net and Z'ir will be in order of the Wing in my absence. However, I have a favor to ask." V'rak paused. Yes, both Wingseconds would be able to handle his wing, but when it came to children, none was more well suited than Lan'ae.
V'rak let the silence stretch for a moment. "I want you to handle the Weyrlings. Are you willing?" he asked with a hint of a smile, Bristith shifting with a soft grumble before he ambled off, no doubt to find Adeloth and pay her some attention.

Lan’ae couldn’t help but smile at his wingleaders mention of a bronze’s ego. But the day after such a flight the winning bronze had every right to have a full ego. In any case, Lan’ae took the offered seat and listened as the younger man spoke.
Yes he did know that those two would be in charge of the wing, but what did that have to do with him? At the mention of handling the weyrlings, Lan’ae’s look of attention turned into a look of surprise. In the full 35 turns of being a dragonrider, a bronze rider at that, he hadn’t been asked to move up in rank but with his family he didn’t mind it. At this offer, he was rather taken by surprise.
Ten turns ago he would have wished to speak to his wife before making the decision, but even so he knew he’d have turned it down in order to spend more time with the children who lived in his weyr. And yet, even as he thought of that he was reminded of how quiet his weyr was now with his youngest daughter the only one in common attendance.
“I would be delighted, Weyrleader.” The answer left his mouth before the words had time to register in his mind. Did he really want to give away the extra time he had always kept aside for his family? And yet after eight turns since their last child was born, Canora wasn’t showing signs of another despite their attempts. Perhaps taking on other children wasn’t such a bad idea… oh what would he tell Canora?

V'rak's mouth cracked into an all out grin. "Excellent." he chimed. That was one thing on his list of things to do. "I'm sure you'll enjoy the Weyrlings as much as they'll enjoy you." The Weyrleader had seen some of the candidates running about. Not a bad group. He was sure Lan'ae would have little problems with them.
"And Eznorth is good?" V'rak asked, a change of subject. He didn't need to get head deep with Lan'ae until a clutch was laid and closer to hatching. However, the heads up for the new Weyrling master gave him plenty of time to prepare.
"And of course, Canora and your horde of children?" V'rak was not envious of those with large families. As far as he was concerned, Jannike was more than enough, if not too much...

“You think so?” Lan’ae said rather hopeful despite his age and experience at the man’s mention of the weyrlings liking him. Maybe his rash decision wouldn’t be so bad, maybe even enjoyable. Sure most were older than his children when they were still around, but he can handle a houseful of toddlers, and his own teenage son who chose to stay home was turning out to not be the nightmare many claim the age group to be. Surely it’ll be fine.
“Eznorth is learning to enjoy bathing in the sun more an more.” He answered with a crooked smile as he gently brushed his dragons mind before continuing. “And my youngest son has turned down his grandfathers offer at an apprenticeship to stand at the next hatching. Canora and I have high hopes for him.”
“And how are you and yours?” he asked, meaning his own bronze – not sure if the man would consider the queen rider his as well.

V'rak chuckled lightly. "Well, you've seen Bristith. He's quite well." He didn't bother to try to locate the bronze. He knew full well where he was. He thought for a moment trying to remember Lan'ae's youngest boys name. He knew he was 2 years elder his Jannike.
"Ancanis..." he said finally pinpointing it. "He'd make a fine rider." the Weyrleader complimented. Unfortunately, he had the same situation with his daughter, as much as he disliked women in the ranks of Wings. He just had to prepare himself for when she was old enough to stand for Candidate. He'd never thought of dumping the Weyrbrat with his mother to occupy both of them.
Nahhh. Jannike would drive the old lady mad!

Lan’ae’s age showed in the handful of creases that showed at his eyes as he smile broadly at the Weyrleader’s comment of the bronze Bristith. It was at the compliment of his own son that Lan’ae seemed to begin glowing with fatherly pride. He really was a family man in every aspect.
Inexperience found him curious though, it had been many turns since he was a weyrling. He wasn’t exactly sure where he should start. The queen had just been flown which meant about a season and a half till she clutched and another season till those hatched. When that time came his world would be turned upside-down.
“Goodness Weyrleader, I’m not even sure if I know where I should begin…” he finally gave in. Despite his uncertainty, it was easy to tell he was excited about the idea. It was certainly going to be a different adventure for both himself and his family.

V'rak leaned back stiffly in his chair, stretching his legs under the desk before they cramped. He was glad Lan'ae accepted the position because, frankly, the Weyrleader had no back up for him. He shifted his seat until he was comfortable.
"May I point you in a starting direction?" he asked, but didn't wait for an answer. "Start with finding yourself a reliable assistant. You may already know my brother is within the Weyrling ranks. I doubt he aspires to be an assistant, but he can help. I also recommend that you maybe observe some of the candidates running around. I know we have at least two Gold Candidates within the Weyr, the rest is a mix." he smiled.
That was his approach, he always observed the weyrlings in their classes before letting them in his wing. He was a good judge of character and temper. Perhaps that wouldn't work with Lan'ae, but maybe it would.

Lan’ae tilted his head slightly as he thought about the man’s advise as places to start. An assistant would certainly be useful, especially a younger one. Yes Lan’ae could keep up with his grandchildren, but weyrlings could be another story with hatchlings linked to them. And what better way to learn how the weyrlings may be if not by observing the candidates first? Lan’ae should have thought of that. Well, he’ll start thinking of good ideas for the future now that he has somewhere to start.
“All good ideas, Weyrleader.” Lan’ae said, smiling broadly again as he righted the angle of his head. Slapping his knee, the older rider stood and offered his hand to the man before him. “I won’t let you down V’rak.”

V'rak smiled, mirroring the older rider as he stood. He took Lan'ae's hand in a firm shake. "I certainly hope that you don't." he chuckled, though a serious thought shadowed that chuckle. Misguided Weyrlings could mean disaster or tragedy for a Weyr. However, he put his complete faith in Lan'ae's capable hands. He knew the older rider well enough.
He released the other's hand, still smiling and nodded, before stepping around the desk once again to walk the rider to the entrance -or in this case, exit- of the Weyr. He didn't mean to haste, however, this was just the beginning of his list of meetings and discussions for the day.
"Rest while you can, Weryling Master." he laughed as he showed the older man the way out, though it was hardly necessary.
