As part of his candidate chores, Aldril had been assigned glow duty. He had to go all around the Weyr, replacing old, dull glows with new ones. "Make sure you get those old storage rooms!" The Headwoman had reminded him. "Everyone always forgets those. They must be dead by now."
And so Aldril merrily went about his business, taking care of the deadglows and humming to himself as he went. That was, until he reached one of the older hallways, which was narrower and darker. He took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment to steel himself. The Headwoman had said not to forget these places, and he wouldn't.
Maybe he would just wait to see if someone else came along, though. Some company would be nice.

Hierzet was probably not the sort of person one wanted to run into in the dark, cramped hallways that he was walking in. He was in a fairly good mood. It wasn't often he was given an easy chore. Mostly due to his behavior he was given less desirable or nasty chores. If he had to clean the latrines one more time, he was going to the Headwoman.
On his way to the Main Caverns, he saw someone changing out the glows. He could scare the other boy if he felt like it but today he was feeling lenient toward those less fortunate than himself. The candidate walked slowly out from the shadows. "Hello there." He was quite certain he had never seen this boy before.
The brunette was not a huge man or even muscled like a rider. Hierzet wasn't flimsy either. He had a more wiry strength. At least this other boy didn't seem too strong either. He walked closer so that the boy could see him more closely. "I'm Candidate Hierzet. Who are you? And what may I ask are you doing down here?" His voice was sickeningly good natured. It was not his true character that was shining through at that moment. Hierzet would as soon kick someone in the groin as become buddy buddy with them.

Aldril was trying to make sense of the shadows before him when a voice sounded behind him. He jumped a little, then flushed and turned to face the other candidate, drawing his shoulders up in an attempt to look as if he hadn't been startled at all. "Oh-hello," he said, smiling at the other boy.
The brunette candidate's questions seemed a touch pushy, but they were delivered in such a cheerful tone that Aldril was duped into believing in Hierzet's friendliness. "I'm Aldril, also a candidate. I've got to replace glows for candidate chores," he explained. "You too?" he asked, trying not to sound too hopeful.

Hierzet was glad when the boy jumped at the sound of his voice. Someone here wasn't comfortable in the dark. If he didn't have to stay out of trouble so that he could stand he could use that fear to his advantage. For the time being he could pretend to be nice and find out more about this Candidate. After the Hatching there would be plenty of time to get into trouble, and he would hopefully have a dragon by then as well.
"No. They don't give me easy chores like glows anymore. I do a lot of things around here that they only give to people who are capable of doing them." Well, it was partially true. He wasn't given them just because he was capable. Mostly he was given difficult chores as a punishment for something or other. It was hard to stay out of trouble when there were so many people to mess with.
"Better hurry before the glows go out and then you have to find your way forward in the dark." Hierzet had no fear of the dark but he got the feeling this boy was nervous. Heh, well not everyone could be like himself. More was the pity. He stood with his arms folded across his chest, not moving or preparing to say anything else.

"Oh." Aldril could not think of a better reply to Hierzet's declaration that changing glows was too easy. He narrowed his eyes, disliking the other candidate's haughty tone, but he didn't want to get into an argument. "Well, I've only been in the Weyr a few sevendays, so I don't know much about those more skillful chores," he added finally.
He turned his gaze back to the cramped hallway and gave a small, exasperated sigh. Clearly, he was on his own. "It's not the dark I'm worried about," he muttered before taking a few steps forward into the narrow hall. "Well, then. I guess I'd better get this done." He glanced back once at Hierzet, then tried to put the other boy out of his mind, hoping that he would just walk away.
