While the Hatching had gone well by anyone's standards there were still those who suffered from it. Not the least of which, a young blonde who managed to get herself mauled by Elfreth. Larissa was out of it for about two days before finally coming to. Her blue eyes opened slowly. She felt numb and more tired than she had ever felt before. She moved her mouth experimentally and felt pain. Her left hand lifted to her face and she gasped not only in worry but in pain.
Slowly she lifted her torso so that she could sit up enough to look at the rest of herself. The memories were starting to come back to her. The Gold coming toward her then trying to move away but being clumsy managed to lose balance and then Larissa remembered falling. After this there was nothing. She should never have gone onto that Hatching ground, the blonde thought to herself. Managing enough mental strength to go throug with looking at herself she lifted the covers.
Her leg was in bad shape. Really bad shape. Bad enough that she knew for a fact it would be a long recovery. Never to walk like a normal person again and most certainly not to dance, that was what this experience had left her with. Judging by the pain in her face, her beauty, the only thing anyone ever noticed about her, was gone. Larissa knew her father would not be pleased though she doubted he would blame this on her but rather on the person who pushed her onto the Sands to begin with.
Cymmi burst into the infirmiry with haste. He had been waiting for her. The little brown projected through a small series of images. He looked very pleased with himself and seemed to be of fine health. Someone must have been feeding him, she mused to herself. Sitting up was making her dizzy so Larissa laid herself back down on the bed. Cymmi curled up on the pillow by her head, as if to gaurd her from further harm.

D’wyr had witnessed the ill fates of the gold candidates on the sands. He had been concerned, but this was the first he had been free to check up on Larissa in the infirmary. She was one of the nicer candidates.
Still even after seeing the mess on the sands he hadn’t entirely been prepared for the state she was in. The beautiful, sweet, kind Larissa was now a mangled swollen mess. He didn’t let the shock show in his face or voice, knowing how horrible she must feel about it. He finaly pulled up the courage to speak.
“It is good to see you awake Larissa, you were incredibly lucky, Elfreth killed another girl on the sands.” His voice was strangely small for a man who was six feet two inches tall.

W'nes had come in then, quiet as a church mouse. His eyes were red and from his sobbing, the poor sensitive soul. His gut wrenched as he saw his best friend Larissa laying there on the bed. They had known everything about eachother, and for a second there on the sands, he had thought he lost his kindred spirit. The shock of loosing her had been the worst cold jolt he had ever had, and W'nes had followed her body to the infirmary as she was carried away. Of course, the healers had sent him away to get something to eat and let them work, but he could never stay away long.
He didn't want her to stand because she herself didn't want to stand. He never encouraged her to do anything she didn't want to, and he shivered in thinking how she expressed her fears about the hatching. He shouldn't have let her go! He should have barred her or forced her to go away with him. But who was the bluerider kidding? He could never force anyone to do anything. He lacked the confidence, the leadership even. Zinth tried to soothe him, but W'nes was wringing his hat in worry as he walked in.
Quickly he assessed the boy there, a new bronzerider. What was he doing there? W'nes didn't have even the time to awknoledge him, because he saw Larissa was sitting with her eyes open. He stepped quickly to her side, and smiled warmly, "Lar! I'm so glad you are awake! Are you in pain? Can I get you something? Oh but your eyes are as pretty as ever! I'm so happy to see them! Cymmi looks happy to see you too, huh?"

Larissa took a moment to process what D'wyr had said. She recognized him but had trouble remembering his name. Lara knew a lot of people, and he was probably a Candidate from the last Hatching. He may even be a Weyrling rider now and she would not know. "Yes, I saw that poor girl from Keroon. It wasn't the Gold's fault, she tripped." That was all she really remembered about the event. Everything else was somewhat vague.
Her blue eyes looked past the young man sitting nearby to the familiar face of her best friend. His eyes were red, she realized and he looked altogether a complete mess. She would have been the same if their positions were reversed. Larissa managed to smile but winced at the pain it cause. "W'nes." She aknowledged him as he bombarded her with all sorts of things at once.
The blonde's mind took a moment to catch up. There were many things swirling around in it that had little to do with what W'nes was saying. She had missed him since he became a Weyrling, he had had less free time and often seemed akward around her. Now he was being more like himself. Her pale hand reached out to his, where she held it. "Thank you for taking care of him and me." He had called her eyes beautiful which suprised her. All this time she had known him, he never really brought up her beauty. Lara assumed that it made it easier for him to be friends with her. For a while she even conteplated he might be into men but she had dismissed that. He didn't strike her as that sort.
She paused thinking over her next words carefully. "I am in a little pain, when I move but it only prevents me from doing things I probably shouldn't be doing yet." It was Lara's nature to take negative things and turn them into positive ones. "How long have the two of you been hanging around here? Surely you have other things of more importance to be doing." Larissa loved people but she wasn't sure she liked having to be taken care of. She preferred to be the one taking care of others.

D’wyr smiled pointing to the blue rider “He has been in here every day worried sick, or so my cousin has said. This is really the first opportunity I’ve had since Svarth has a nasty habit of demanding every spare instant of my attention”
He didn’t need to add that the healers had shooed him away succesfuly several times. He imagined that the other boy had been quite determined and couldn’t picture the healers pulling him away if they tried.
Breena had been hesitant to return to the Infirmary, the amber eyed woman studying the entrance with such intense dislike those watching might suddenly expect a scrub brush to go flying. Still D’wyr had already entered and she needed to go to, she wanted to see how Larissa was doing, and definitely liked the girl who oddly mirrored some of her own features.
Finaly taking a breath she strode in. D'wyr glanced at his cousin pleased that she finaly decided to enter the dreaded infirmary. He shifted his gaze over to Larissa smiling. Breena too looked at the girl, recognizing the same blonde curls and bright blue eyes that before Breena had taken Ill seemed so happy.
"Oh Larissa" her voice was soft as she moved to the girl, a batch of wild flowers in hand. She set them on a table near the girl mindful not to get in W'nes way. She recognized the blue rider as the same one who had been hovering over the girl night and day while she was still recovering. "Not too much pain I hope, I can go get some numb weed from one of the shelves, or find a healer if you need something stronger."

Larissa was suprised that the blue rider had taken so much time out of his schedule to see her. It made her slightly more concerned for what this had put him through. "I guess I gave everyone a pretty good scare." She was still holding W'nes' hand because she needed to comfort him the only way she could. He seemed to have taken this so hard. Hopefully Zinth wasn't upset by all this as well.
"Oh thats wonderful! You did impress then? Svarth, thats a lovely name." She added with another painful smile. She had met Danwyr a few times and was glad the Candidate had impressed which reminded her she couldn't go around calling him Danwyr anymore. "And what shall I call you now that you have impressed your Svarth?"
She heard someone else enter but didn't try to sit up to see who it was. Sitting up was too much right now. "Breena, thank you." Larissa recognized her as one of the other girls she worked with at times in the Lower Caverns. Sadly she had no idea why the girl was so concerned about her. Larissa did not want to be rude, in fact she always tried to be overly nice to people but she did wonder as to why Breena was so concerned for her. "Oh, the pain is nothing. I'm so glad you are all here." And she was also confused as to why certain people weren't there.
"I'm going to wager a guess and say no one in my family has even bothered to check in on me. Not even my father." Larissa frowned slightly. She would have been at any of their bedside. Not for the first time, she was glad other people saw in her something her family did not.

D’wyr smiled softly, “D’wyr, though my mother would kill me, she used to tell me she spent forever on choosing my name. Now I’ve inadvertently gone and changed it.” His intent was to make her laugh or smile, it didn’t seem right that she be laying there. That was the way things fell into place at times however.
“Yeah when you’re all well you should see him sometime, coppery bronze thing though I imagine he won’t stay too little for much longer.” He added with a half smile glancing at W’nes who probably had his own news of his blue.
He glanced over at his cousin, noting with some sympathy the way she was fidgeting. She avoided the infirmary more often than not of late and visiting Larissa was as much therapy for her as it was for the girl in the bed.
Breena smiled to Larissa, though it was apparent on her features she did not want to be in the infirmary so soon after being able to leave. The look of mild confusion on her face told Breena that Larissa was indeed wondering why she was here. “We Drudges have to stick together” seemed to be her only reply at the moment. Larissa had always been very kind; to everyone it seemed only right to make sure she was okay. Then there was the thing that she had only suspected. But this was pushed from her mind for the moment. “Besides I feel like we’ve bonded a bit.” She laughed “I had an illness during the hatching when you came in, of course we were both bent out of our minds, but I felt bad being able to leave with you still in here.”
“Who’s your Papa?” she asked mentally recalling most of the visitors who came through the doors after the fever broke. “There have been people in and out of here but I haven’t seen your mother or sisters since I escaped this place. They may have visited since then though.”

W'nes let the others talk as he assessed her face. It would be scared for the rest of her life. She has lost the one asset that everyone else cared about. Every one else except maybe him and her closest friends. She was a sweet, caring, and gentle soul. No doubt her mother would find Larissa useless for all purposes now. The redhead ran a hand through his hair, "Your mother inquired about you, but relayed the message that she's too busy organising the feast and other things. I haven't seen your brother or sister, nor your father, but he might have been in when I was out."
Poor Larissa had it hard to be the only laid back on in a family of ambitious social climbers. They were similar, so that was why they were such good friends, he guessed. W'nes answered Breena's question, "Her father is the bronzerider L'var. Tall, nice looking man, I guess. Brown hair."

She did give in and smile at that, "I'm sure she won't mind at all now that you have a beautiful Bronze, both of your parents must be thrilled." Hers would be. In fact before she had gotten herself nearly killed, that would have been her mother's second option for her, find a Bronzerider. Just went to show that she was meant for something else.
Since they were on the topic of Weyrlinghood, she took a moment to bring up what she hoped would be a good conversation. "W'nes, have you and Zinth graduated?" She had not wanted to miss that ocassion. If she had she would be slightly upset. He was the truest friend she ever had and she wanted to be there when he became a full fledged rider. Larissa had no doubt he would be a wonderful dragonrider.
"I do look a little like him though I'm obviously my mother's daughter. " Would that she weren't. Then she could have worked in the Creche before she became scary to look at. What kid would want to be around her now? She tried to keep herself from thinking negatively but she felt the sting of those thoughts and knew them to be partly true. "I doesn't suprise me really. Mother is always busy, Janirsa couldn't care less about me and J'var is also very busy as Weyrsecond. What father's excuse is, I do not know but I had expected so much more of them all." Looking back at all three faces gathered around her, she smiled again, trying to look less painful. "I couldn't ask for better friends though."

D’wyr laughed. “She is proud of me I imagine, I haven’t seen her since I made it here. Once Svarth is old enough we might go back for a visit.”
His attention was directed at Breena as he noticed his cousin three shades paler than normal at the blue rider’s words. He listened to the rest of the conversation but kept tossing glances at his cousin, what had gotten into her?
Breena felt as though her pulse had stopped. She blinked in rapid succession processing the blue rider’s words once more. Had he actually said L’var? Bronze rider L’var, as in the only L’var the girl knew of in Igen. Her normal warm cream completion had gone downright translucent. And Cat like eyes widened in realization.
She had never before seen the resemblance but then it had never occurred to her before that Larissa could have been her half sister. Sharding bronze riders . . . she thought with some ferocity. At least she could give Larissa some comfort though how much was uncertain.
“He was in as I was being discharged.” She answered quietly. She hadn’t thought much of the comment he had made upon seeing Larissa. Now the words rebounded on her with new meaning. Such a shame, such a beautiful face Anger burned in her gut, how dare he abandon her! Was this why she had seen more of him lately? Two powerful emotions twisted in her gut, the love of a daughter for her father, and the realization that the man who she had idolized was such a shallow tunnel snake. . . Did Larissa know? Breena remained quiet, unable to think let alone process the new information. If she didn’t it would be something that had to wait until the girl got better. . .

((shall I unleash the monster?))
Well dressed as she always was, Larissa's regal mother entered the room. Janesa looked smug as she looked around the room and studied her wounded daughter. Pitiful creature, Janesa thought. A wave of sadness rushed over her, and it was a strange sensation. Such emotion hadn't hit her for turns. Janesa probably hadn't felt this way since right after her youngest was born- when she found out that the child she bore to save her relationship with L'var had been in vain, he began sleeping around on her. Cursed bronzerider. Of all the men to give her heart to. In order to save him she didn't have the chance to stand, and now her living sacrifice, her Larissa, was maimed. Worthless! The child might have been slow to come around to Janesa's way of thinking, but what man would want the poor girl now?
Still, the sadness was from more than the ruined plans, Janesa did care for her daughter. Larissa would have a harder life from now on, harder than Janesa ever had. Her smug face softened a bit, and she puckered a bit, "Oh, my poor darling. What did that creature do to you?"
She pushed W'nes out of her way gently enough and sat on the bed. She stroked her daughter's cheek, a tender movement she hadn't done since Larissa was two. Janesa smiled, taking pity on her youngest child. She had not totally dissapointed her, like J'var in kissing that whore of Bitra, or Janirsa in failing miserably on the sands. Sure, Larissa hadn't Impressed, quite the opposite, but Janesa had known Larissa didn't stand much of a chance. She was more dissapointed she put all her stock in Janirsa. Maybe she was wrong to have Larissa stand, but her ambition for her children had blinded her, she thought Larissa still wanted to upgrade her status. She hadn't realized how badly Larissa had feared the sands, just assumed Larissa had cold feet. Still... "Don't worry, mummy's here. I know, I know, you don't expect much from me. What a brave daughter you were. And your friends are all here to see you. How sweet."
Janesa looked around the room, that spineless brat of her best friend, W'nes, a new weyrling she didn't know, and a pretty blonde thing. When Janesa saw Breena, her smile faded. Oh, there were rumors, and the girl didn't have to bear part of L'var's name to evade scrutiny. Janesa was the type that if she couldn't tame L'var and keep him, no one could. Despite the fact that the woman Zeritha proved quite capable of doing just that. Janesa turned back to Larissa and smiled lightly, "My darling, we'll have you fixed up in no time. You won't have to work another day if you don't want to. You can even be a help to Kiaran if that's something you would wish. I can't believe I almost lost you."
You just don't know what you have until you've lost it. Or almost lost it.
_____
W'nes let himself be pushed away from the bedside and watched Janesa talk to Larissa. Sure his mother and Janesa were best friends, and had been since before he was born, but Janesa had never called Larissa darling before. What had caused the change in the Headwoman? His mother always told him that Janesa 'wasn't that bad,' but he had never believed it. Janesa was ambitious, she was eager to see the advancement of her children and the downfall of her enemies. He wasn't even sure if Janesa was capable of compassion, but here she was, gushing over Larissa. Strange, but he didn't know what do say so he just stood there.

((haha))
Larissa nodded at D'wyr's comment and while she noted Breena's reaction to what W'nes had said, she figured it simply had to do with her being the daughter of a Bronzerider. Some people became rather shy around her after that was mentioned. It wasn't like she was that close to either parent. Her father had favored her for a time but she was sure that was over now that she had ruined the only thing that anyone had thought was good about her. "I doubt I will see him any time soon. He has a fondness for pretty things. I am no longer one of them." As much as she make act the lovable fool, Lara understood people fairly well. She knew what her father saw in her and what other men did as well.
Just as she thought that her mother came in. Speak of the... well, at least she didn't look angry. Larissa's wide blue eyes, watched her mother go from looking haughty, to pitying and finally to loving and grief. As she pushed W'nes out of the way, Larissa looked past her mother to see that he was okay. Lara would have preferred her mother to treat him better than she did but then, she only thought of him as a lowly bluerider. The blonde did not understand her family at all sometimes. A good person was something of value to her, regardless of rank.
While the shock on her face took a moment to disappear, Lara also softened her face. Her mother didn't hate her anymore. Which was something strange to her. Larissa, being who she was, let her mother say what she needed to say and do what she needed to do, to cope with this situation. Before her mother drew her hand away the blonde girl caught it with her own, beautiful unmarred hand, "I know you never meant for this to happen. The Gold didn't either, she fell, she was trying to avoid hurting me. You know how clumsy they are when they first hatch."
Lara hoped that would ease her mother to the girl who impressed. Then she realized she had no idea who had impressed. Her mother would be the wrong person to ask, so perhaps another time. She hoped it wasn't Janirsa. It would only make Larissa look worse, though from her mother's visit she could guess that Jan didn't impress either. "Oh but I do want to work as soon as I am able...I just wish I wasn't too ugly to work with the children. They all like pretty nannies..." The girl sighed, she was never going to walk the same or do anything the same. It might have been better if the dragon had killed her.
"Yes, they are wonderful. D'wyr is an old acquaintance, and he impressed to Bronze Svarth in this last clutch. Breena was a Gold Candidate but she was ill, I take it, for the Hatching. I had no idea either of them would be here but I'm so glad they are. " For that she was looking at her mother but she was looking past her to W'nes, "You know W'nes but mother, you should know he has been watching over me. If anyone truly cared about my well being it would be him. I don't see why you can't treat him with more respect." Cymmi, who had been watching Janesa with his head cocked to the side, laid his head back down on the pillow next to Lara's head. The brown firelizard had had enough excitement for one day.
"Mother, thank you for coming. I do feel I'm getting tired. I think I'll be needing something to dull the pain soon..." She winced after she spoke, moving her mouth was messing with the wound on her face. She was tired and she was overwhelmed. "I love you mommy." She said quietly for only Janesa to hear and it was almost as the girl had said it when she was but a child.

Being near Janesa never really set well with Breena, and as the headwoman come in with that smug expression on her face. She wondered if it was because of what she now knew. . . Breena backed away a bit as she walked through, never one to get in the head woman’s way at least not intentionally.
As she listened to Larissa’s reply to the fact that the bronze rider had visited her heart sank for the girl. It didn’t seem right nor did it seem fair really. But she could say nothing with Janesa in the room, their relationship was always tenuous at best, and more stress to the mix was not something she felt the desire to add any time soon. She watched the mother and daughter exchange statements, and was surprised by the caring the woman expressed at her daughter’s injury. It surprised her, perhaps Larissa would not have things as badly as others may perceive.
Danwyr gave an amiable nod to the head woman as she entered, observing everything from a distance. He nodded to Larissa “Get better soon! Svarth gives his best wishes.” He gives a respectful nod to Janesa and ducks out of the room, presumably to take care of the aforementioned dragon.

Larissa had caught Janesa's hand, and the Headwoman was a little unused to being touched at all. She tensed for a second and then let her self relax, listening to the concerns of her once beautiful daughter. She clucked her tounge, "Oh my sweet, I know it's not your fault, you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I do not blame you for ruining your beauty. Well, outer beauty, anyway."
She did blame Elfreth and there was nothing the gold dragonet or her daughter could say to persuade her otherwise. It was the bias of a mother to defend her children even when her own were the ones wrong. However, since her daughter was in delicate condition, she was not going to argue that thought. And it didn't make her want to be nicer to that Bitran who Impressed the gold. Janesa had to be nice to Laszreen now.
Janesa frowned, "Aw, well, there are other interesting jobs than caring for children if that is what you wish. Do you like cooking? What about sewing?" She hesitated, "What about art? We could always use people to update murals and have a good eye for design." Was an artist a suitable career for one who's outlook on beauty must have changed? Moreover, for herdaughter? "Just something to think about. I can get you a spot anywhere."
Maybe her favortism had come about since she knew, or had heard, that L'var was ceasing his attentions on Larissa. Typical feuding and separated parents. Maybe it was just because of her good mood that she was so nice. Well, then Larissa defended W'nes, who cringed. Janesa stiffened slightly at being lectured by her daughter. "Well. I suppose I could be more polite to your little friend." Faranth knows she was more than polite to certain other people she despied more.
Larissa looked tired and had thanked her for coming, "You're welcome, darling, I'll call the healer." Janesa leaned forward to kiss Larissa's forehead and her words. Janesa smiled softly, whispering, "Love you too, 'Riss."
She stood up and with some command demanded a healer to assist her daughter to the next person to walk by the room. She regarded D'wyr's curtesy, and began to plot a little. Then she excused herself to Breena and W'nes and slipped out the door. ----------- W'nes lifted his eyebrows when she was gone, and then looked at Larissa, "Wow, you stood up to her. Has your wounds made you mad? Janesa is ruthless. What if she hates me even more?" He smiled though, "But it would be worth it. Wow. I wonder what's gotten into Janesa. I doubt your sister Jan would be happy if she found out that your mother is suddenly babying you."

Larissa let her mother soak in everything she had said. The Headwoman was intelligent and understood the world far better than her daughter did. Larissa had loved the Creche, but that didn't mean she was incapable of other things. None of them really sang out to her though there would be plenty of time to think about it. "I'll think about it." Thats all she had to say on the matter.
When her mother left to get the healer she was suprised at the tenderness of her words. Her mother loved her again. The blonde was shocked even when W'nes started talking it took a minute to recover from what had just happened.
"Not mad, its just, when you think your going to die, you remember all the things you should have done. I decided I don't like being treated like a dimglow. You are my friend and I won't have her treating you like you don't exist. Although, you mustn't ignore me like you did in Weyrling training or I will be sorry I said anything." She was smiling at him, not really angry about any of it. He did have a dragon to care for after all.
"Jan will not be too upset. I'm sure she'll find a Bronzerider to seduce...." Told you how highly she thought of her darker sister.
