Rory nodded. He hadn't expected it either but he had. No one seemed to mind that he needed more space, though he wondered what people thought about Rory having a son. Gossip was gossip, nothing more and he probably wouldn't like what people were saying if he knew. "I am sorry for your loss. You will find many people here share your story in one way or another. Maybe you can write a song about it?" Rory suggested amicably.
He wasn't being flirtatious today, lucky for the Harper. "If you are hungry now, I can take you to the Weyrhall. Its not a long walk from here. Everyone sits at the Weyrhall according to rank, much like at a crafthall, I'd wager." He knew that it would be odd for a Journeyman to be sitting with the other non-riding residents but at least he would have plenty of people to talk to.
Rory wouldn't be suprised if this man was approached for being attractive by more than one person today. There were many blue and greenriders who were homosexual. That he was a harper would only make them that much more interested. He figured it best to warn him, " Since you are in mourning, I'll apologize in advance. There are going to be many riders interested in you, who won't think twice about trying to seduce you. Most of them aren't at all interested in a relationship either."

Karl shruged. "Somehow I don't think most people would understand what we had. And others would probably object to the difference in rank. Like it's any of their business. And I'm willing to sit about anywhere I can get food right now."
He nods to Rory's comment about the riders. "I'll survive. I'm sure I can keep things under control. It will be interesting to be at a place where that veiw isn't something to hide. If you will lead the way to the food."

Rory, being a drudge, did understand the rank difference being hard to deal with. Most people might not understand in the Hold or Hall but here at the Weyr dragonriders were a little less picky about personal relations. "I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised from that standpoint. There people who do value rank but Telgar Weyr has been known to be rather accepting of people being together of different rank. I would know, seeing as I'm a drudge."
That was all he could really comment on as far as that went. Obviously the Harper was going to have to figure a lot of this out on his own. The Weyr, in Rory's opinion, was a great place to live. Most people were congenial and easy to talk to. Food was starting to sound good, even to Rory. He might allow himself a snack today though he had plans to meet Allior for the evening meal. She was bringing Kerzule and the girls and Rory was bringing Nishor. It would be nice to spend more time with her and the kids.
Man, he was sounding old and... like a married person. Wierd. He was so lost in thought at this point that when he reached the Weyrhall, he didn't take any time to explain where things were but made a bee line for his usual table. At long last realizing that he wasn't talking about where they were, he cleared his throat. "This is one of the tables designated for non-riders. The High Table, is only for the Goldriders, Weyrleaders and special honored guests."
He paused and pointed in at the long tables nearest the High Table. "Those are the Wing Tables. I'd steer clear of Pyralis Wing most of the time. They tend to have rather fiery personalities. Zahra Wing is another group you may want to watch your step around. They are the worst when it comes to teasing and pranks. Really its better you not get on their bad side. At the other end of the Hall, thats the Weyrling Table. And closer to us is the Candidate Table. "

Karl grins slightly at Rory's comment about being a drudge. "And whats wrong with drudges?" He sighs slightly as memories come back to the fore. "Dar was one." Karl goes quiet as they walked to the hall. Karl still wasn't sure how to handle things. He didn't think he could ever forget. But at the same time, he had to 'get over it'. The question was going to be how.
Karl looked over the hall after they arrived. He listened to the description of the tables, being carefull to make a mental note of it all. "Where is the kitchen entrance? Something good to know when in need for snacks."

"There isn't anything wrong with drudges. In fact I'd say we are a rather amiable, hard working group. We may enjoy a bit of gossip, fine wines, music, dancing, poker and above all handsome men, but we are nonetheless important members of the Weyr, Hold and Hall. Point to fact, I can probably fix anything, where a Bronzerider wouldn't know where to begin and would probably make it worse. I'm not saying dragonriding doesn't have its perks but sometimes one has to move on from childish fantasy. I certainly have had to do a lot of that lately."
He was a rather open person, most of the time so Rory sharing a lot of information about himself would not be out of the ordinary. He laughed when Karl asked for the kitchen entrance. "I actually know all the kitchen entrances, my sister is a cook. Finest bubblies in the Weyr. If she is on duty right now we ought to stop in adn see what the advice is on what to eat today. Always good to know whats fresh and what isn't."
With that said, Rory led Karl to a small door on the right side of the Weyrhall. After opening the door he waited for Karl to wall. He opened the door and inside was a bustle of things getting done. Everyone seemed to be working and going about their business when a flour handed woman came over an kissed Rory on the cheek. "Allior, fancy seeing you here. It just so happens I've brought you all a guest. This is Journeyman Harper Karl. Karl this is my sister Allior." After introductions were over, he began to ask for what food was freshest and looked tastiest.

Karl chuckles quietly about the comment of handsome men. It looks like he wont be too out of place around here. And he has someone to compare notes with.
Karl bows slightly to Allior. "Nice to meet someone so important." He grins. "Of course anyone who controls the food is important. You have anything besides meatrolls available? Thats all I've had for the last few days and would just love to have something else right now."

Allior greeted him, " Anytime you need something just ask." She took out some roast wherry stew. "This will make your stomach feel great. After travelling I'm sure your feeling a bit jumbled in there." Allior was Rory's closest confidant and he would trust her with his life.
It seemed she had left a good impression on Karl. After taking out a couple of bowls, Rory placed them on a tray. Allior ladled some stew on them and then asked the harper, " Anything to drink?"Rory poured himself some juice and waited for Karl's order.

Karl enjoyed the smell of the stew. "Some juice would be just fine." He seems a bit less outgoing with a crowd around.
He was just going to have to get use to the weyr and it's inhabitants. Allior seemed nice enough. So was Rory. He would have to see what the rest were like. "Is dinner served at a standard time or is it eat as you have time? Don't want to eat too much now if a meal is going to be served soon."

Rory poured another cup full of juice and placed it on the tray that seemed to appear out of nowhere. Sometimes he was a little too good with his dexterous hands. "Ahh, well that is the beauty of Weyr life Karl." He grinned.
"The kitchen doesn't really close and you can eat here till a little after dark. Then it closes but the Night Hearth will have snacks set out for those who get the late night munchies. Klah is always available and if you know people who can get you into the kitchen, you have nothing to worry about. Breakfast foods are generally served till about the eleventh candlemark and then they switch to mid day foods."
Allior waved the two of them off as she had much to do. "See you later Karl and Rory, I can watch Nishor for you tonight if you can take care of the girls tomorrow. I'm supposed to bring Kerzule to some meeting. He was mock searched or some such thing. Anyway, I'd appreciate it." She smiled a bit hesitantly. "Works for me. I'll bring him around after he is fed."

Karl snags his drink and finds a seat at the appropriate table. He lets Rory bring the tray with him. He had met three people so far. And had yet to meet any of the leadership besides the headwoman. But he figured that would change soon enough.
"It usualy this quiet between meals? Is there any place most people hang out when they don't have any work to do?"

Rory laughed, "Trust me, you'll be glad its quiet now and again in the Weyrhall. Most of the time its so loud you can't even hear yourself let alone carry on a decent conversation." He sat down across from Karl and set the tray down smoothly. Rory had quite a bit of practice with it.
"Well to be honest. A lot of the Weyrfolk like to spend time outside when its nice out like today. The Lake is busy. Most Weyrfolk are busy during the day so they are more likely to be at leisure at night. In this case the night hearth is frequented and some people even hang out in the hallways. I prefer the Hearth for a game of poker myself..."

Karl snags some food and starts to munch quickly, as if he is use to grabing snacks whenever he can. "I guess I'll have to see what it is like." He chuckles. "Going to have to get use to not having a set schedule for each day. I'm sure I will find stuff to do, or others will find stuff for me to do."
"Don't mind a game of poker myself, as long as it is kept friendly. Though never had much time to master the game. Between classes, chores, and trying to have what personal life I realy wanted, didn't have much spare time."
Personal life, that is something he was going to have to figure out around here. Karl was sure there would be people he could socialise with. Rory struck him as one. The question was if he was up to finding someone to go beyond mere socialising with. He wasn't sure if he was up to that so soon. He would have to see how things worked out.

Rory smiled at that. "Well I'm sure the Weyr will grow on you with time." The harper would soon realize he wouldn't have much free time. What with lessons for the children in the Creche and performing ballads for the riders and of course social occassions. Rory would let him figure that out for himself.
He was a drudge and therefore not seen as important. Rory however, took his own job seriously. He didn't mind hard work. In fact that was one of the nice things about being a drudge. Work hard and play harder! Lately it was more work hard, take care of Nishor, get sleep...
"I wouldn't worry about your social life too much. Most people here love harpers. You are sure to meet plenty of amiable and easy going people." Whether he realized how many people lived at the WEyr or not, he ought to guess that it was a lot and finding friends was not a hard thing to do. Telgar was one of the largest on Pern, in comparison to other populations. For which they owed both Beynath and Adeloth.

Karl nods as he snacks. He hoped a decent number were as nice as Rory. ANd maybe he wont get into as many fights as he did back at the Hall. But then he doudted the reason for the fights would come up, unfortunatly. He sighed quietly to himself.
He looked up at Rory, "Never been at a weyr before and heard all sorts of stories, some good, some bad. So I don't get into too much trouble by not knowing, are casual relationships allowed? Umm... like when you take someone ...to your room for just the evening?" Karl seemed paticularly nervous about the point.

Rory had just begun to swallow some of his stew when Karl brought up casual relations. He nearly choked with trying not to laugh. "You'll be lucky if you find anyone who wants more than that. If you like casual relations, this is the place for you." He took a moment to think over his own past relations.
He was certainly not someone a Holder would be proud of. Not only did he like men, but he liked women too. The fact that he was in love with a greenrider would speak volumes about his character. Rory kept up the amiable conversation.
"I was one of those who enjoyed affairs and flings when I was younger. They get boring. My favorite and most memorable relationship was with a greenrider." He added. Rory didn't have to say he still loved the man, but he ought to mention that at least.
